reading response

Choose one of the questions below to answer in your reading response.  Please use at least 2 pieces of evidence from the text to support your answer to the question.  Your response should be at least 250 words – if it is not you will not get full credit. PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER MORE THAN ONE QUESTION IN YOUR RESPONSE.  IF YOU DO THEN YOU WILL NOT GET FULL CREDIT FOR THIS READING RESPONSE.

1. Page 51 to Page 53 is in italics and is told in a different point of view.  Why does the author do this? What is the significance of this change in text and perspective?  What does it reveal to us about Lola that we do not necessarily have access to in the rest of the chapter / text?

2.Do a close reading of this passage on page 65:  I started to think that maybe it was like in the books; as soon as I lost my virginity I lost my power. What does Lola mean when she says this?  What kind of power has she lost? What books do you think shes referring to? What idea is she referring to?

3.Do a close reading of this passage on page 210:  It was only when I got on the plane that I started crying. I know this sounds ridiculous but I dont think I really stopped until I met you. I know I didnt stop atoning. The other passengers must have thought I was crazy. I kept expecting my mother to hit me, to call me an idiota, a bruta, a fea, a malcriada, to change seats, but she didnt.  Why is Lola crying at this point in the story? For whom is she crying? For whom is she atoning? What in the story or text leads you to believe that that is your answer to those questions?

4.Choose a particular facet of analyzing literature and discuss in-depth the greater significance of what you found in Oscar Wao  These facets include: setting, characterization, plot, theme, and imagery.  Please make sure youre spending more time explaining the significance of this particular facet and analyzing it rather than telling us what it is and providing summary of the story.

The article and reading response guidelines are attached.

Reflection paper on teen pregnancy

Teen pregnancy has been constructed as a social problem caused by poor decision-making on the part of adolescents. Evaluate and show why focusing on personal responsibility alone offers an incomplete or distorted picture of the causes of teen pregnancy. In your argument, identify and provide a rationale for one socializing influence that you feel deserves greater attention. The social influence you select may draw on ideas discussed in class: e.g., parent socialization, a school system that keeps adolescents socially young, the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage, or tv shows (mass media); however, you are free to reference a social factor we have not specifically discussed: e.g., teen pregnancy as gendered or racialized.

Creatively propose a solution that addresses the social influence you have identified above. Evaluate the extent to which your proposed solution might lead to changes in teen pregnancy. Finally, consider how your proposed solution might alter assumptions about adolescence more generally.
