Any topic (writer’s choice)

Argumentation . . . appeals to reason; state a debatable position and, using sound evidence, try to get your reader to share your position.

Persuasion . . . can appeal to reason as well, but also to emotion and ethics (logos, ethos, pathos).

Neither essay format is mutually exclusive of types of appeals.

Choose a topic
Consider your audience
Consider the length of the essay or paper; the scope of your discussion depends on the length of the assignment
Read (research) about your topic in order to determine the scope of your discussion
Use the Journalists Questions:  who, what, where, when, why, how??? to help develop your material.

  Develop a thesis
  Is your topic debatable?
What are others opinions on your topic? (Keep in mind your rebuttal.)
Hint:  Sometimes the use of the word should in your thesis provokes an argument.

  Who is your audience?
Go beyond thinking that just your professor would read your argument.  What if your paper were shared with others in the class?  Published in a student newspaper?
For a stronger presentation, assume your audience must be convinced of your position; perhaps they are skeptical or unbelieving.

  Gather your evidence**
What kinds of evidence will you use?
Evidence should be relevant to your topic, should be representative of the full scope of your topic, should be sufficient, i.e., contain enough facts and examples to support your point of view.

Opposing points of view (rebuttal)  Refute opposing arguments–try to pull the rug out
  from under the opposition.
If opposing arguments are strong, you may wish to acknowledge that, but still include your strongest evidence that supports your view.
You can run the rebuttal throughout your body paragraphs or write a separate paragraph.  If you write a separate paragraph, it is usually placed right before the conclusion.

  DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT
Your paper is strengthened by reference(s) to experts who support your position.  Quote them when appropriate; however, be aware of overdoing it.
Keep in mind your quotes should support your argument, not BE the argument.
Statistics and general references to an authors work must be documented too.
Choose quotes that support the more controversial aspects of your position.
Remember:
Do not use quotes as a topic sentence.
PAD the quote:  Punctuate, Attribute, Document (where required)

he research paper should  analyze ,compare, contrast, discover, balance, and seek to provide the reader with an excellent understanding of all issues.

I expect extensive research for this paper; I also expect to hear your voice, too. Provide a recommendation, summary/conclusion. There must be a minimum 9-12 bibliographic sources, of which, at least 6 must be from book sources.

My rubics are:

Did you follow instruction.

Art History Research Paper

My assignment to you is to research a specific controversy of artistic patrimony.  My goal is that you will better understand the very relevant and current cultural worth of artworks from bygone eras.

Some suggestions: The Elgin Marbles, Euphonias Vase, Head of Nefertiti, Getty Bronze, Trojan Treasure, ISIS destroys ancient artifacts.
Some key words: stolen artwork returned, seizure, Marion True, Metropolitan Museum, Getty Museum, patrimony, Interpol, ISIS.

1. Choose a specific work of art from within the Cultures and Periods covered in this course (i.e. not 20th century, China or Africa, etc.).

2. Introduction. Articulate why you chose this object. What is its artistic and cultural significance.

3. Formal Analyis. Describe the work fully, including its material, size, artist(s), date, and location of origin.

4. Conduct research online. What have the media had to say on your topic. From when does the controversy date? Use only viable sources such as the New York Times, Newsweek, Museum websites, etc. While you may want to use blogs as a starting point, do NOT rely on them for quotations or information. Be sure to keep track of your sources.

5. Argue in favor of one side or other. Articulate your argument and offer  a viable conclusion.

6. In-text citations should be MLA format. Cite your sources carefully whenever you use information that is not general knowledge.  If you get all your information in one paragraph from a single short page range in a book, you may consolidate your citation at the end of that paragraph.  If two sentences together use the same reference, consolidate the citation to the end of the last sentence that draws upon that page. Otherwise, you will need to cite each statement.

7. You must include a seperate Works Cited Page that cites all your research materials, from web-pages  (including dates accessed) to articles and books that you used to develop your paper.

Below are two links for the videos on Heat and Temperature.  You may look at them now or later or during our next online session.  I will not be giving the data of the experiment. You, the student, need to watch the video to get the data while watching the video and record in your data sheet. Rest of the parts, calculation, plotting graph etc should be as usual. You can actually “do” the lab now or anytime before our  online class.  Just watch the two videos and “take” the data.

In an assessment of approximately 750 words, address the following:
1.Determine which of the ratios provide the most key insights into the firm’s current level of performance. How can you assess whether the results of your calculations are positive or negative?
