Examine the word problems

You are going  to examine  the word problems on the attached page to answer these prompts.

  I.  Describe how each word problem can be categorized (use the below bullets)
i. Is it Addition or Subtraction?
ii. What is unknown: Start, Change or Result Unknown?
iii. Does it have an action or not? Can you show this with a picture?
iv. Which type of addition and subtraction problem is it? 
a. Join problems 
b. Separate problems 
c. Comparison Problems 
d. Part-Part-Whole Problems 

These types of problems can be further studied on Appendix A: Types of Addition and Subtraction Word Problems.
II. Reflections
i. Use pictures, manipulatives, charts, and/or graphs to help explain your understanding of the problems.
ii. Identify and describe any patterns that you discovered in categorizing the problems. 
iii. Discuss what worked, what didnt work and what you did when you got stuck. Did you consult anyone or research anything while working on this problem?  What did you find out or learn from thinking about this that you didnt think about before? 
III. Write a number sentence for each word problem.
