During the course of African American history, students will be exposed to the context and particulars surrounding slavery, however to expose students to the actual experiences of slavery this assignment allows students to dive into one slave narrative to

2-3 page 12-point font double spaced paper due on Sunday, September 27th
2.      Students are required to have three sources: Revel textbook, Blassingame, and Booker T. Washingtons Slave Narrative.
Use Kate Turabian documentation style to cite sources throughout the paper (link to the slave narrative)
As historical documents, slave narratives chronicle the evolution of white supremacy in the South from eighteenth-century slavery through early twentieth-century segregation and disfranchisement. As autobiographies these narratives give voice to generations of black people who, despite being written off by white southern literature, still found a way to bequeath a literary legacy of enormous collective significance to the South and the United States. Expected to concentrate primarily on eye-witness accounts of slavery, many slave narrators become eye-witnesses as well, revealing their struggles, sorrows, aspirations, and triumphs in compellingly personal story-telling.

The Slave Experience Paper should answer the following questions/prompts:

How does the former slave describe life before emancipation?  What did individual slaves do before the Civil War and afterward?  How does the former slave describe the role of their slaveowner?
Did emancipation change his life? If so, how?
How does this narrative support or contradict themes addressed by Blassingame?  Be sure to compare the role of Mr. Washingtons family, the role of the slaveowner, and the general childhood experience of Mr. Washington.
Describe the role of education in Mr. Washingtons childhood and early life?
What question does this narrative raise?

PTSD

1. Carefully read the articles that focus on different populations affected by PTSD.

2. Also be sure to cite and include information from the DSM 5 and Hooley text.
These two texts should inform your discussion in addition to the articles. If you mention something from one of these texts, cite it within the text in APA format.

3. In a well-written, scholarly commentary of at least 6 paragraphs, please summarize the diagnostic criteria for PTSD in general as well as the unique issues that affect the different groups that are at high risk for PTSD that are mentioned in the articles (i.e. gang members, veterans, etc). Be sure to mention at least 3 of the articles in some depth.
You need to SUMMARIZE the diagnostic criteria for PTSD in general but then discuss unique issues that are specific to different high-risk groups. You can briefly mention issues for specific groups and then either compare and contrast between groups or go into more depth regarding one specific group. (refer to point #4) All of the readings should inform your discussion. However, you need to be sure to mention specifically
at least 3 of the articles in your discussion.

4. It is important to highlight both commonalities among most individuals diagnosed with PTSD as well as particular factors and concerns that are unique to various high risk groups. You may go into depth on one high risk population or take a broader approach comparing and contrasting risk factors among different high risk groups.
As mentioned in point #3, you can compare and contrast the groups or highlight one group in more depth. If you highlight one group, you will still need to mention how that group’s experience is unique, which means you may need to briefly mention other groups). For example, if you have particular interest in the article(s) discussing PTSD and veterans, you might mention a factor or concern and then mention how
that is different from the experience of gang members. Or, perhaps you find some similarities. You would not need to then go into great depth regarding the PTSD experience of gang members, just mention it as a point of reference if you are highlighting veterans as your focus. If, on the other hand, you choose to more
broadly compare and contrast the various groups, you would more briefly discuss the similarities and differences between them.

5. Be sure to mention the importance of biological, social and psychological factors that affect each at risk population. This just means that whether you decide to focus more in depth on one particular group, or if you speak more broadly about all groups, comparing and contrasting them, you need to mention how biological, social and psychological factors play a role. You would discuss this in more depth if you choose to focus on
one population. You would discuss this more briefly for each population if you choose to more broadly compare and contrast the groups.

6. Please be sure to cite each article or text you mention. You are to use in-text citations in APA format after referencing an article or text. No works cited page for this reason.

Case Brief: Savino vs Robertson

Brief the case of Savino v. Robertson found in the textbook. For information on how to access this case (as well as others you will need for the case brief assignments in this class), please review the instructions found in your syllabus. The four elements of a brief are summarized in the Case Brief Guidelines and Rubric document.

In addition to the brief, discuss negligence issues in Savino v. Robertson, the case’s connection to Nabozny v. Barnhill, and what constitutes “organized competition.”

For additional details, please refer to the Case Brief Guidelines and Rubric document.

Any topic (writer’s choice)

Write a 4-page effectiveness review in APA style about child/adolescent therapy. Students may choose two theories from the following choices – psychodynamic, Adlerian therapy. Each of these are described in detail in the Kress et al. text.

Based on your reading of the Kress et al. course text, students should select two orientations to review. The aim of this paper is to provide a high-level overview regarding how effective the two orientations are for children/adolescents as well as to summarize any limitations.

For each orientation you review, students will, first, discuss how that therapy is effective for children/adolescents (e.g., is the therapy best for kids of a certain age or with a certain set of concerns? Or, what about this therapy is uniquely designed to help children/adolescents improve?). Students should NOT summarize the orientation. Rather, students should focus on how and why the therapy is effective in helping children/adolescents. Students must also use at least 1 peer-reviewed source per orientation (so at least 2 total) to enhance their effectiveness reviews.

After students demonstrate how and why the therapy is effective for children and/or adolescents, then, second, please offer a critique of the orientations individually. Your critique of each orientation should contain your examination (written professionally, not colloquially) of the limitations of the therapy. For example, are there cultural groups that might not benefit from this therapy? Is this therapy limited in its evidence base (e.g., not a lot of research to demonstrate it’s effective). Students should consider multicultural applicability in their evaluation. The aim of this section is to demonstrate your critical eye in how you evaluate the appropriateness of this therapy for a wide audience.

The paper should be formatted as follows, and should use required headings and subheadings:
Introduction
Therapy Orientation 1
Effectiveness of orientation
Critique of orientation
Therapy Orientation 2
Effectiveness of orientation
Critique of orientation
Conclusion

The introduction of the paper should provide an overview of what you intend to discuss in the body of your paper. The conclusion should provide a closing summary and any remarks that would bring your paper to a close.
