Levelized costs are the present value of the total cost of building and operating a power plant over its economic life, converted to equal amounts per watt-hour of electricity generated by the plant, (Heptonstall, 2007). This takes into account the amount of capital expenditures, operating and maintenance costs, and fuel costs, (Simkins, 2013).

Obviously, some of the most important expenditures are the construction costs associated with building the energy plant. These costs include: structural material and installation, mechanical equipment and installation, supply and installation of electrical instrumentation and controls as well as many others. The costs to initial construct the energy plant as well as ongoing costs or recurring costs should be considered. For example, inverters in solar PV plants must be replaced every few years, (Simkins, 2013).

Additionally, costs associated with operating the business should be considered as well. These costs may include office space and other areas needed by employees. Financing the plant is also a cost that should be included in calculating the levelized costs. Before a plant turns a profit, there is a lot of money that needs to go into constructing it, which most of the time will need to be financed. Fixed and variable costs associated with operating the plant also cut into the levelized cost of the plant.

Fortunately, there are also incentives that add to levelized costs. For example, there are tax credits available for solar or other renewable energy production and investment, as well as other tax credits for residential users of these renewable resources. Additionally, in the United States, there are special grant and loan programs available from the US Departments of Agriculture, Energy and the Interior. There are state incentives available as well (U.S. Energy, 2019).

The levelized cost of energy (LCOE), also referred to as the levelized cost of electricity or the levelized energy cost (LEC), is a measurement used to assess and compare alternative methods of energy production. The levelized cost of energy of an energy producing piece of machinery or equipment,  can be thought of as the average total cost of building and operating the asset, per unit of total electricity generated over an assumed lifetime. LCOE can also be thought of as the average minimum price at which the electricity generated by the asset is required to be sold for in order to offset the total costs of production over its lifetime.

In an article that I found titled Costs of electricity generation compared: beware of simple metrics. It talks about the key factors in influencing the choice of fuels and technologies used to generate electricity, which one of them is cost. Capital, maintenance, operating, and financing costs often vary across different technologies and fuels. Also, the regional differences in construction, fuel, transmission, and resource costs, means that location does matter with all these costs. This then takes us back to LCOE, it does not include contractual terms on price, duration, or price inflators, they should not be directly compared with other prices such as power purchase agreements. Power purchase agreements can involve, project- or corporate-specific finance terms (U.S. EIA Today). They reflect different contracting terms with the power purchaser, or reflects the value, rather than the cost of the energy. Also, some federal, state, local, etc. taxes can affect some costs associated with building certain power plants and other places where energy is produced.

Different technologies operate in different ways. Some of them are dispatchable, some can be scheduled, while others are dependent on energy sources, such as wind and solar. Some plants operate around the clock, others operate only during times of high demand. Since the electricity prices differ throughout the day, the timing of a plants output affects its cost recovery. The article also goes into talking about LACE, levelized avoided cost of energy. It measures the value to the electric system that certain technologies provide. LACE also shows the cost that would be sustained to provide the same supply to the system. The article mainly talked about LOCE, but I figured I would add some of the LACE mentioned in the article.

This article relating to retirement planning was meaningful to me because it covers an area that is often overlooked. The article is about how to minimize the fees that are associated with a typical 401(k). Basically, it conveys a saying that I like which is: “The answer is always no if you do not ask”. In the article, they explain how typical fees for retirement plans are normally quite low at around 1%. However, the article goes on to illustrate how it is easy to simply shop around for a better fee rate. For their example they are referring to those who work for medium to larger companies. These companies have the ability to easily look between different options and choose the ones that match their risks with a lower fee. Another thing they can do is to just reach out to the manager of the fund itself to potentially negotiate a lower fee rate. This is obviously an easier strategy for those larger companies with more influence and input. However, it still got me thinking personally about how to minimize fees in general because over time they will add up.

In the article “Retirement Planning for 20-Somethings: Don’t Fall Into the ‘Playing It Safe’ Trap”

I learnt about the importance of diversifying a portfolio and more importantly the use of stocks rather than using only bonds and interest rate funds. Another thing that I learned is that younger people are able to bare far more risk than those closer to retirement or in retirement already. This is even more relevant to those of us in our twenties. In order to maximize this target funds are the best option for younger people as they are very diverse and have a high risk tolerance to begin and gradually become more conservative as the target date is approached. This was a very interesting and informative read.

Thematic Analysis Essay 3

Thematic Analysis Essay 3, Acts 13:128:31

In an essay of 1000-1500 words, analyze the thematic development of this third movement of the book of Acts. While this is not an exclusive list, be sure to address the following elements:

1.    How does this segment develop the theme of the geographical/ethnic advance of the proclamation of the gospel presented in the key verse of the book, Acts 1:8? What is the geographic target? Trace the development of this theme through this section of Acts.

2.    Identify what you believe to be the most important themes developed by Luke in this movement of the book (of Dr. Fowlers nine themes) and trace those themes through this segment of the book.  Fowler states that all of the key themes converge in the final chapter of the book. Describe this convergence.

3.    Luke presents three evangelistic messages by Paul in this movement of the book: his sermon in the synagogue of Pisidian Antioch in chapter 13, his plea to the people of Lystra in chapter 14, and his address to the philosophers of Athens in chapter 17. He also narrates Pauls defense appearances before Governor Felix, Governor Festus, and King Agrippa 2. The last of these includes a gospel presentation. Read the three evangelistic messages and the defense before Agrippa again. Compare/contrast Pauls preaching to the Jews with his preaching to pagans.

4.    What pattern/progression do you see in the Jewish response to the witness of Paul in these chapters? (Give attention in your thinking to Pauls words in 13:4647, 18:6, and 28:2528.)

8 traits

Look at the list of 8 brand personas on page 186. Now pick a real business and check out their social media presence.

Create a list of the 8 traits with examples to what the company is doing on social media. You can link to it or embed pictures or videos. You may have to make an educated guess for some of these.

Make sure you have different examples for each of the 8 traits.

Scene analysis

E) SCENE ANALYSIS After each life experience assignment and class discussion, these chapter concepts and terms will be further reinforced through a series of scene interpretations from a chosen movie. Each chapter assigned to this work will have a list of several terms or concepts to choose from (number to be determined in class) in movie handout listed on in course documents section of BB. There will be four chapters that will have a scene analysis assignment. Each chapter analysis is worth 10 points. Students will choose number of determined terms or concepts and define them from the chapter in textbook. Only definitions from the textbook can be used. Definitions must be written verbatim as it appears in chapter. Step by step instruction on how to do this assignment is in BB section called course documents. More on this step approach to the assignment in class. A rubric will also be handed out (or posted on blackboard) for additional instructions on how to this scene analysis, as well as past student scene analysis papers for reference. Aim: To gauge each students ability to apply terms or concepts from the reading to better understand the cultural, social, and communication actions of others. UTILIZE Scene Analysis # 1 Chapter 12: Intercultural Communication AND/WITH The movie we will be using for analysis is Boyz N the Hood. https://en.m.wikibooks.org/wiki/Survey_of_Communication_Study/Chapter_12_-_Intercultural_Communication I think the movie can be found on YouTube
Survey of Communication
Scene Analysis Handout
Instructions:
There are three scene analysis papers due during the semester. The goal of each analysis is to gauge your knowledge, understanding and ability to apply certain terms or concepts from chapter readings.
The chapters the class will analyzing are 12 (Intercultural Communication), 2 (Verbal Communication) or 3 (Non Verbal Communication) and 9 (Inter Personal  Communication). Please look over the information below.
Under each Chapter Heading you will see the movie to watch and a list of key terms or concepts. Please view the following steps to do the assignment.
(3) STEPS TO A SCENE ANALYSIS:
1) Choose _______terms or concepts from chapter list. Once this is done, DEFINE verbatim each term or concept FROM THE TEXTBOOK.  Definitions from any other source will NOT be accepted.  This first step must be written out on the paper you are handing in.

Definitions should be at least 3-5 sentences in length. The more detailed definition you have the more words to work with for a better chance of an accurate and meaningful analysis (more on this in Step # 3).

2) Once you have the definitions in place, choose a SCENE that you think best connects with the definition. For example, if you choose to define the word STEREOTYPE, you need to pick a scene from the movie that best illustrates or demonstrates the definition of STEREOTYPE.

3) Once you have the definition and associated scene in place, your analysis begins. Analysis should explain or interpret the chosen scene USING THE WORDS FROM THE DEFINITION OF THE TERM OR CONCEPT you picked.
Example. The scene for the term STEREOTYPE needs to analyzed or broken down using the words from its definition. No personal opinions, inferences, or responses are asked for or accepted. In class we can discuss any personal thoughts about your analysis.
All answers are based on applying the words from a term or concepts definition.
There will be a rubric physically given out and or on blackboard as a reference guide to the assignment.

Chapter 12 Intercultural Communication Movie is Boyz in da hood
1) *Racial prejudice
Racial discrimination
Racism
*These three terms are a package deal. They will count for ONE question. So please choose one scene or scenes that best illustrate them.
2) Intersectionality
3) Privilege
4) Ethnocentrism

5) *Minority Identity Development (In analysis of a character, connect stages 1-4)
Majority Identity Development( In analysis of a character, connect stages 1-4)
*everyone has to choose, apply, and analyze either Minority or Majority Identity Development to one of the characters in the movie.
6) Collectivistic versus Individualistic Culture

7) *Representation
Symbolic Annihilation
*These two terms are a package deal. The count as ONE question.
If choosing these terms to analyze you will need to profile a character who you feel is being portrayed in the movie in a way that illustrates the two terms definitions. You may wind up comparing your analysis with other examples from another movie or medium outlet.
Perhaps though, you may also feel that this movie breaks through certain racial stereotyping defined by the two terms. If so, provide reasons and scene support that contradicts the terms definitions

Architecture French History Response

The deliverables are two responses to two sets of readings. Each response should be minimum of 500 words which means a total of 1000 words for this assignment. I will post the questions and conditions for both assignments and the readings which correspond. If this job can be finished by 11 pm tonight it would be ideal. Thank you.

Writing Assignment

COUNTERMEASURES INC. (CMI) is a virtual manufacturing company that has a contract to supply 500 doses of recombinant anthrax vaccine to the US Department of Defense (DOD). The Government will test the vaccine in a phase I clinical trial involving military and civilian personnel. The DOD will be the Sponsor and holder of the IND under which the trial will be performed). Since it has no manufacturing facility of its own, CMI subcontracted with MEGATECH Inc. (MTI), a contract manufacturing Organization (CMO) that owns a current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) – compliant manufacturing facility, to manufacture and deliver the vaccines to the Repository at the Trials-R-US (TRU) clinic with whom (DOD) has negotiated to carry out the phase I clinical trial. As the staff at TRU was receiving the vaccines that came in three pallets, they observed that one corner of one pallet had been bashed in and as they unwrapped the outside coverings, they discovered that many of the vials had been crushed and their contents spilled. The two intact pallets were moved into a walk-in temperature-controlled holding area while the third (damaged) was transferred to a separate walk-in temperature controlled area. The vaccine excipient included a rich medium with a broad buffering capacity requiring a storage temperature of 2-4oC. Four days later, the Quality control manager at TRU who had been away on a trip went into the walk-in area where the damaged pallet was being held to complete the paper work he would need to prepare his report to CMI. He immediately noted that it was quite warm in the room, obviously warmer than 10oC.

Identify the regulatory risk(s), if any, posed by the damage to one of the pallets and the reported temperature excursion. You may identify other risks too but the emphasis should be on the regulatory considerations for the product and those affected by it.

Project 1: Draft Prompt

The Texts
Rhetorical Situation, an Introduction — Itai Halevi
Coming to Terms from Rewriting — Joseph Harris — Chapter 1
The Rhetoric of the College Application Essay: Removing Obstacles for Low Income and Minority Students — James Warren

The Task

In his chapter Coming to Terms, Harris offers a model of academic writing. He writes:
[I]n dealing with other writers, your aim should be less to prove them right or wrong, correct or mistaken, than to assess both the uses and limits of their work. That is to say, academic writing rarely involves a simple taking of sides, an attack on or defense of set positions, but rather centers on a weighing of options, a sorting through of possibilities.

So, lets put Harriss ideas to work: Write an essay in which you try out what Harris calls rewriting in order to come to terms with Warrens essay. To do this, assess the uses and/or limits of Warrens ideas or claims. In other words, what use can you make of Warrens ideas? What limits do you see to Warrens discussion?

The Terms:
Length: 4-6 pages
Format: MLA citations, 12 pt font, double spaced, 1 inch margins
Due Date: 9/30/2020

Write your draft here:

Ethic

Your answers to each of these questions should be at least one paragraph (6-7 sentences) long, and it should show some thoughtful consideration regarding the matters raised in the questions.  Your total set of answers to these questions needs to be at least 200 words.  Also, when you reply to these questions, be sure to insert the letter for each question next to your answer corresponding to that question.

You will also need to reply to at least two students.  When you reply to another student, you do not need to reply to that student’s answers to every single question for this week.  You can just pick their reply to one question and reply to their answer to that question.  Your replies to other students should be at least 100 words long each.

A. One interesting quote regarding Virtue Ethics from a scholar is this: “Aristotle’s theory also has important things to say to us as a society, a society that virtue ethicists claim places far too great an emphasis on rules and personal rights and not nearly enough on personal character and responsibility.” Explain what this quote is saying in your own words.  After explaining what you take it to mean, state if you agree with it or not.

B. One criticism of Virtue Ethics that we covered this week goes as follows.  Think about ethical theories that we looked at in previous weeks – such as Utilitarianism and Kantianism.  These theories give us crisp, clean, and rigid rules that we can follow in virtually any situation.  By contrast, virtue ethics seems problematic insofar as it lacks the crisp, clean, and rigid rules that theories such as Utilitarianism and Kantianism has.  Do you think that this is a good criticism of Virtue Ethics – why or why not?

C.  One of the things that we will be doing each week is discussing some cases from our text Thinking Critically About Ethical Issues.  Look at Case 23 on page 121.  After looking at this case, answer this question about it.  What, if any, virtues did Claude exhibit in this case, and what, if any, virtues was he lacking?

D. One of the things that we will be doing each week is discussing some cases from our text Thinking Critically About Ethical Issues.  Look at Case 10 on page 131.  After looking at this case, answer the following questions about it.  What, if any, virtues did Cibella exhibit in this case, and what, if any, virtues was she lacking?  Also, what, if any, virtues did Cibella’s boss exhibit in this case, and what, if any virtues, was that boss lacking?
