research summary

Students are expected to write critical autobiographical descriptions throughout the semester as part of their ‘Our Sporting Lives’ project. These reflections provide points of reference for the Our Sporting Lives project, track understandings of social and cultural differences for the courses concluding dialogues, and contribute to discussions by prompting students to think about how course concepts apply to their own lived experiences.
Module 1 topic reflections will build upon each other to deepen personal reflections by integrating additional research. Students will first write an empirical/experiential reflection, next summarize a related additional scholarly source, and finally synthesize their empirical and scholarly sources to further critically reflect on their gendered sporting experiences.
Module 1 topic reflection 2 is due by midnight on Friday, September 25th. Each of the Module 1 topic reflections are worth 10 points and the topic reflections together are worth 20% of the total course grade.
Please note: This class, and these reflections and the discussions they will prompt, are for students with all levels of experiences with sport – elite and recreational, team and individual, participant or consumer (i.e. fan), enriching and alienating, inclusive and exclusive. Please utilize topic reflections to think and write about these experiences, whatever they may be.

Module 1 topic reflection 2, Our (Gendered) Sporting Lives – research summary

Article selection

For Module 1 topic reflection 2, students will choose 1 appropriate article from pre-selected academic articles (see the shared Module 1 bibliography google doc) exploring the experiences of men, women, and various LGBT athletes to situate their own lived experiences and supplement their discussion of a personal experience related to Module 1 content (gender, sex, and/or sexuality) (see Module 1 topic reflection 1).

Students may want to consider the following questions when selecting an article:

What is the gendered sporting experience(s) you will be focusing on (see Module 1 topic reflection 1) and its connection to related concepts and consequences of orthodox gender ideology?

How would this article support a critical reflection on your selected experience?

e.g. The article is about  ______ (see the article abstract). This supports my experience of ______ (see above) through the author’s focus on ______ (key concepts or research findings that are similar, or in some way relatable, to what you’ll be writing about).

To locate, browse, and select an article for Module 1 topic reflection 2 students should view and follow the instructions provided in the recorded introduction to searching InfoHawk+ for known records.
Module 1 InfoHawk tutorial
Play media comment.

Once selected, students should download a .pdf of the article to closely read and annotate Preview the document in order to achieve the level of comprehension necessary to integrate the source into their writing.
Discussion sections on Friday, September 18th will be dedicated to ensuring students are able to locate and access an appropriate source from the list provided.

Research Summary Criteria

Module 1 topic reflection 2 (10 points) will be evaluated on the following criteria. Each of the criteria will be graded as complete, incomplete, or absent.
Summary (8 points)
Summarize your selected scholarly article (approx. 250 words; paragraph format; in the following order)
Content (approx. 100 words; 4 points)
what is the article about? (e.g. what topic, sport, person/people are the authors researching)
what are the major findings? (of their research)
Critique (approx. 150 words; 4 points)
how did the author(s) come to their conclusions? (e.g. what questions did they ask? what ‘methods’ did they use to answer their questions?)
what do your agree and disagree with about the article? (e.g. what are your critiques of the research? what points of the research really resonated with you? how will the article be useful to reflect on your own sporting experience(s)?)
Support (2 points)
Support your summary by paraphrasing (Author, Year) or directly citing (Author, Year, p. #) your selected scholarly source.
Students should use correct APA in-text citation when paraphrasing or directly quoting from sources.
For examples of correct APA citation format, see: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/.
Incorrect citation practices can result in plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined by the CLAS Code of Academic Honesty as “using the words, sentences, arguments, rhetorical structures, and ideas of another without proper citation and acknowledgment” and includes:
Failing to use quotation marks properly or when needed, give a source for quoted materials, give a source for paraphrases, paraphrase language completely, and/or cite sources correctly and completely
Students should provide an APA-formatted bibliographic citation for your selected scholarly source at the end of their reflection
For examples of correct APA bibliographic format, see: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/.
Students will post their Module 1 topic reflection 2 in a group discussion between students in the same community cohort, or ‘homeroom’. Students will not see any posts by their peers until they have posted themselves. Though students will not be required to respond to other students in this discussion they should still read the posts of their peers to become familiar with additional article selections and research on Module 1 topics and/or to better understand their own selected article (if others in their group had the same selection).

health and wellness

How to complete the Assignment:
1)    Choose one of the following research questions, or if you have another question you would like to explore for this assignment, ask your instructor for permission.
o    Does Nature or Nurture contribute more significantly to the development of mental illness?
o    Are there dangerous implications of lowering the physical activity requirements for adults and children?
o    Are present day technological “advancements” affecting our health positively or negatively?
o    Is there one national health objective that you feel is imperative to improve the health of Canadians today?
o    Are e-cigarettes a good option for people looking to quit smoking?
o    Is high intensity interval training appropriate for people with chronic diseases?
o    Should marijuana be legalized in Canada?
o    Is happiness and sense of humour something that can be trained or something that we are born with?
o    Are the non-pharmacologic (non-medication) treatments that are available for depression more effective than medication?
o    Does eating a vegetarian or vegan diet or other fad diet (pick one) make people live longer?

2) Once you pick your question, develop a hypothesis.
o    Example question: Does bare foot running prevent injuries?
o    Hypothesis: Bare foot running prevents injuries.

3) Use the Humber library Discover search engine (library.humber.ca) to locate at least 3 peer-reviewed primary journal articles on your topic. See the video posted on our Blackboard website for downloading papers using Discover. In addition to these resources, you may also reference other good quality sources of information such as Government websites (i.e., Health Canada), Government documents, or publications from not-for-profit organizations (i.e., Osteoporosis Canada). In total, 5 references must be used. Sources such as Wikipedia are not acceptable.

4)    Use the inverted pyramid method to develop an outline for your paper. Under each heading for your outline (see below), write down 3 points that you will make in your paragraph. Use point form/dot-jots. Be sure to include at least 5 references (books, websites, magazines, journal article), 3 being from peer-reviewed journals and include the proper in-text citation and build a proper reference list. You must also include at least 1 direct quotation.

5)    Use the sticky note method, or develop a chart summarizing the information that you found on your topic.

6)    Turn your point-form outline into a paper by putting your researched ideas into your own words. Consider the tips, below, to turn your outline into a paper. Your final submission should be no longer than 500 words.

Suggestions for headings include:
Background or introduction (contextualizing)
o    Introduce your topic in a broad sense. If you are researching a disease, provide some statistics about how common the disease is. State your research question and your hypothesis at the end of this section.
Literature review or summary of evidence (conceptualization)
o    In your own words, provide a review of the papers that you read and discuss the research results. Be sure to explain or define important terms. You can use phrases such as:
In the study by Thomas and colleagues (Thomas, 2011)
According to the report by Martin et al. (Martin, 2008)
As pointed out by Smith, James, & Douglas (2013)
o    You are trying to tell a story, so think of organizing the research studies in a logical order. It may be that you present research from the oldest to most recently published study to show how research has progressed, or maybe you first present studies that were performed on animals and then present studies on humans. Take some time to think about the most logical and easy to read order!
Conclusion (resolving)
o    Relate the results from the research papers to your hypothesis. Is there enough evidence to make a conclusion? If not, provide suggestions about what further research should be undertaken.
o    Provide a suggestion(s) about what the implications of the research are on health and wellness and why it is important for us to know.
o    You can also discuss future direction of research.

7)    Edit and format your paper according to the following specifications and upload it to Blackboard > Assignments > Assignment #1 Research Paper:
o    Font- size 12, Arial or Times New Roman
o    1 inch margins
o    Double spacing
o    Title Page- title of your paper, name, student number, institution
o    Page numbers in top right corner
o    Running head- top left (see this website for more: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/)
o    Properly formatted in-text citations and references page

question and answer

Writer:

On an attached file : you see 2 different writing with different references that got highlighted as Peer 1& Peer 2.
Each peer answered 2 different Q . I highlighted peer responses in yellow color

Please respond to each peer separately and make sure to use at least one reference. I want you to use in text citation as well. You can use the same reference that the peer used. You do not have to look for the new reference. Pleas use APA 7TH style reference. Accuracy and correct formatting of the references are extremely important to me. Do not mess up the reference part.
Also make sure to use positive words . I do not want a negativity in the response of my peers.
Please write 150 words minimum for each peer.

Assignment: Journal Entry Media and Sexism

Assignment: Journal Entry Media and Sexism
Many marketing efforts perpetuate the gender stereotypes that are steeped in our culture. Two examples at attempts to maintain these stereotypes through advertising are the Bic Critsal For Her and the Easy Bake Oven. These two conceivably innocuous items triggered a flood of articles, petitions, and videos, denouncing their perceived underlying messages.

The first controversy that erupted surrounded the Bic Cristal For Her pen. This pen was created and packaged specifically for women to use. Several groups lashed out at Bic, calling their attempt to target women with “lady pens” sexist and demeaning. Its detractors felt the campaign was degrading and fed into stereotypes by highlighting the thin design and the use of pastel colors. The negative press was overwhelming, although the pens have remained on the market.

Consumers also targeted those responsible for marketing the Easy Bake Oven by sending a petition asking its parent company Hasbro to make the ovens in colors other than pink and purple. Thousands of individuals signed the petition asking for alternative oven colors after a teenage girl from New Jersey was angered that her younger brother would have no other option but to use an oven in the colors that are considered stereotypically female. It was argued that the colors supported the stereotypical view that only young girls would want to bake. The signers of the petition felt that young boys who might want to use the toy would be more likely to practice their baking skills if the color of the oven was gender neutral.

Consider these two stories and think about your own reactions to the responses to the advertising and merchandising of these items.

To prepare: View the assigned resources and reflect on your experience with gender.

By Day 7
Submit a 2- to 4- page paper, in which you:

Identify specific messages about gender presented in the mass media.
Discuss messages about gender you have received from your family or cultural group.
Analyze how these messages have influenced your experience with gender.
Explain how you might address issues related to sexism in the mass media and diverse cultural beliefs about gender and gender roles in your social work practice.

For this blog entry, take the research idea you have been developing (Will crime rates down if drugs are legalized)

take the research idea you have been developing (Will crime rates down if drugs are legalized)

Restate your empirical question.
What type of design do you think is best for your question? Independent Groups? Matched Groups? Nonequivalent Groups? Within Subjects/Repeated Measures?
What is one potential problem with your design (e.g., between groups, within subjects, etc.)? How will you address this? (hint: think about random assignment, matching, and counterbalancing)

Sociology

1. Do you think the United States incarceration practices are too harsh, too lenient, or just right? How would rational choice theory explain your position?

2. Are there structural and/or policy changes we could make to improve our countries recidivism rates? Explain your position.

3. Research what has happened with the Three Strikes Law since the video was filmed.  Have the changes had any impact on our crime rates? Incarceration rates?  What do you think about the amendment?

Make comparisons to the Texas evaluation systems

Hello all,

This post examines teachers and admin evaluation systems in the state of Virginia (VA).

Link to teacher evaluation system: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching/performance_evaluation/teacher/index.shtml

Link to administrator evaluation system: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching/performance_evaluation/superintendent/index.shtml

Examining the criteria for the two evaluations, teacher evaluation seems to consist of more demands than adminstrator evaluation. While, on the other hand, administrator evaluation appears to be more effective. Teacher evaluation consist of professional knowledge, instructional planning, instructional delivery, assessment of student learning, learning enviornment, professionalism, and student academic progress (Virginia Department of Education). In contrast, admin evaluation consist of examining mission, goals, and vision of the school, planning and assessement, organizational leadership and safety, communications,  professionalism, and student academic progress (Virginia Department of Education).

In connection to this criteria, an important detail regarding teacher evaluation is that while it consist of more criteria and thus, increases the work demands for teachers,  it does not account for factors that can affect teacher effectiveness as it should. Factors such as time, resources, inadequate administration, student body, and parental support are flaws in the evaluation process. While the state does acknolwedge this flaw in evaluations, no solutions have been proposed and evaluations remain the same in spite of this; these factors should receive special attention during evaluations. This said, I do believe that the  criteria does provide valid measures of evaluating because each element does impact teacher effectiveness — the criteria just needs to reflect school circumstances.

The administration evaluations takes into account important and necessary aspects of leadership. Unlike teacher evaluation, evaluations are adjusted in connection to school resources, community, and student population. The evaluation process appears effective in that improving instruction schoolwide and public relations receieve the most attention. Additionally, the process looks for distinguishing characteristics which I believe is an important factor for all those leading our schools. Lastly, the admin evaluation process proves to be effective by mentioning that admin vision and mission is compared to student objectives and progress.

Mind Viruses: Richard Dawkins

Structure:
Thesis Statement (one short paragraph)
CQ (Critical Question) – Response (at least one full page)
Thesis Defense (3 pages, supporting your thesis)

Each paper must respond to a critical question (CQ) or the paper will not receive full credit. A critical question is an objection from an opponent. For each of the following strategies, the particular critical question will be given. *When providing evidence in support of your thesis, please avoid anecdotal evidence (personal evidence).

Strategy 3: Dawkins is correct; religion is both viral and harmful.

CQ: Critics will claim that millions of people gain comfort through their religious faith, particularly during times of suffering and tragedy. They maintain that secularism and science have nothing equivalent to offer to comfort people during, especially difficult times, in other words, science is not comforting when dealing with death.

Also, do not turn your paper into a creation/evolution debate. Dawkins argument pertains to religion, not cosmology, and no student in my long tenure of teaching who tried to take this approach knew anything about the evidence of natural selection and evolution. Argue what you know, not what you dont know.
A dead-end strategy is to insist that without religion, there would be no ethics and life would be chaotic anarchy. This is a freshman error. Anyone who has taken an introductory course in ethics could resoundingly dismantle your argument. In fact, as noted in strategy two, Dawkins would argue that religion destabilizes ethics. If a person believes he is right and person two believes she is right and their views are inconsistent, and both believe they are getting their ethical views from God, there is very little they can do to resolve their differences. (See capital punishment, birth control, same-sex marriage, and many others as contemporary examples.)

Stakeholders

You are to put yourself in the shoes of the division president and make a recommendation to the board on how to proceed. You will immediately recognize multiple ethical issues in the facts that contain questions across all of the areas we have studied including employment ethics, environment, cultural relativity, conflicts between virtues and utility, justice and rights, shareholders, and stakeholders of all other stripes, etc.

What I want you to do is write a paper that evaluates these issues using the philosophers, writers, and thinkers we have studied. Contrast what you see as the two biggest moral value conflicts (systemic justice v human rights, shareholder rights v. systemic fairness, virtue v. utility, etc) and make a recommendation to the board. Cite your authority from our materials. Incorporate in your analysis what a Christian business manager would find most compelling in a realistic business sense as well. It can be challenging.
I need for you to practice your best writing skills, analysis, logic, and persuasive skills. Tie the salient facts as you see them to the moral value you think is most important and show how that logically leads to your conclusion. Keep in mind the shareholders are in it to make money and the board is fully devoted to keeping them happy. Still, what is the right thing to do. SELL IT!

I suggest you use the brief format as a guide to the structure because it helps organize your thoughts.

Format for Briefs and other Article Summaries:
Issue: A statement of the pertinent facts and the primary business ethical issue presented by the case or article. This may include references to the ancillary issues to highlight why the student has chosen the primary issue to be the issue of importance.
Rule: A statement of the conflicting moral standards or rules as presented by the applicable portion of the course texts, or the videos or other materials presented by the professor citing the applicable chapter and page or presentation subject where the rules are found, as well as the full text of the rules. One standard is the rule the student recommends for the solution of the issue. The other standard is an alternative rule that could generate a different outcome.
Analysis/application: The students independent analysis/application of the issues presented and the rule to be applied to that issue. In addition, the student may wish to include references to other issues or rules that he or she considered in preparing the analysis.
Conclusion: The students personal conclusion as to the reported facts in the article and the application of the rule selected. What ethical conclusion do you draw from the preparation of the brief concerning the article or situation? This conclusion may or may not agree with the statements found in the article selected.
