Philosophy

For this Discussion I would like you to find ONE real-life example of a Fallacy of Reasoning as listed in Chapter 4 of the reading, Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking by Matthew J. Van Cleave (Links to an external site.).  The example you find could be from any source, e.g., a political debate, a journal article, a textbook you are reading for a class, a discussion you are having with someone, a blog or video that you read or watch, a class lecture or discussion, etc.

I would ask that the example you choose be current and be something that you actually discover as fallacious.  Sometimes for this assignment students simply Google “Ad Hominem”, and as a result, one semester I received a dozen examples from a Sesame Street episode featuring a bit with Bert and Ernie.  I am fairly certain that a dozen of my students were not watching the same Sesame Street episode and so I knew they were all using Google to do the research for them.  So please simply review and survey actual readings, videos, talks, lectures, discussions, and such that you come across this week and in your Post please:

1.Summarize and explain the source/example that you found in which you think there is a fallacy.  You can even provide a link to the source if you like, although you do not need to if you provide a summary sufficient to explain the example.
2.Next, define and describe the Fallacy you think occurs.  Information of the fallacies can be found in Chapter 4 of the reading above.
3. Finally, explain how the example you chose commits the Fallacy and offer a suggestion as to how the example you found may be made a stronger argument without the fallacy being committed.

Argumentative Research Paper
Select one of the suggested topic choices provided in Module 3 or submit a different topic idea to your mentor for approval.
Take a position on this controversial topic or offer a solution to a controversial problem.
Then, write a 4-page (1000 to 1100 words), double-spaced, argumentative research paper supporting your position. Keep in mind, your goal as a writer is to defend your claim through scholarly research and convince your reader that your position or solution is a logical and supported one.
Include at least five scholarly sources and proper in-text citations in APA or MLA format.
Your paper must include a Works Cited or References page and acknowledge all sources that you summarize, paraphrase, and/or quote within the paper.

Imagine that you have been asked to present your argument at a conference on your papers chosen topic. Then, imagine a few scholars in the field who disagree with your claim are present in the audience. Additionally, during a question and answer session during the conference, consider two scholars countering your papers position. Let your readers know what their arguments are and work to convince the audience that your position is the stronger one or that your solution is the better one. Both sides will have merit, but help your audience understand why your claim is the more logical and reasonable one.

Create a PowerPoint presentation containing at least six slides that uses words, images, and narration.
Develop two of the strongest scholarly counterarguments against your papers claim (2 slides for each argument).
Convince the audience that their claims are weak, based on the research you conducted (2 slides). Do not demean the opposition, call them names, or directly attack their positions. If your argument is truly the stronger one, it should stand up against fairly presented academic research.

So There should be a 4 page paper with great references as well as a  6 slide Power point arguing the other side of the thesis.
