Read for today: Chapters 7 & 8, Situating Research (link under announcements) + Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (excerpt under files) Kairos Day #3 (due within 24 hours)

Kairos, in rhetorical theory, is defined as an adaptation of a discourse to a given moment in time. For our current political moment, this will mean a reflection and response to events and controversies that now, thanks to digital and social media, move at lightning speed. On the day of (Tues or Thurs) I will post a topical prompt (based on a reading and/or current issue surrounding politics and media) under the heading Kairos day #1, Kairos day #2, and so forth. The goal will be 300 words, and due the next day (to approximate in-class writing). Spend about 30-60 minutes on this, focusing mostly on substance. Ive based these on local, national, and international issues in the past, and I will plan to integrate our reading material and course content into the prompts, as this will help you demonstrate another form of participation. Im also happy to receive topic suggestions that fit with the class via email!

choose from EITHER the analytical option (Option #1) or the creative/speculative option (Option #2). (Both options have both elements, but one is more dominant than the other)

Option #1 (analytical)

How does Carl Sagan’s “Demon-Haunted World” relate to current clashes of epistemologies (ways of thinking and knowing about the world) and values between scientific expertise and political expedience? In what ways does Sagan apply quantitative values and epistemologies (and methods!) to our political system in his chapter on patriotism (ch. 25, last section of excerpt). Do Sagan’s perspectives and methods still seem viable, valued, and/or ideal, in our own political circumstances? You may also consider here connections b/t the epistemology Sagan believes in and the methods (balony detection, ch. 8 of the ebook) of quantitative research.

Option #2 (creative/speculative)

Imagine you are interviewing a still-alive Carl Sagan. Write a (brief, 300 word) script of this interview. What questions will you ask of him, and how do you think he would respond to current issues and controversies? Still think here, as with option #1, about epistemologies, the scientific method, and political events.

Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my childrens or grandchildrens timewhen the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and whats true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.

The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles. Darkness gathers. The demons begin to stir.”

This paper should be typewritten (12-point font), double-spaced, and have one-inch margins. Please include your name, the professor’s name, and the name of your section leader on the top of the first page of the paper. (An extra title page is unnecessary.) The paper, which is worth 20% of the course grade, should be 2 pages long. Choose ONE of the following primary sources from chapter one in Major Problems in American History #2 (A Southern Songwriter), #3 (Louisiana Black Codes), or #8 (Lucy McMillan Testimony) and write your essay with the following guidelines in mind.

After reading the source (a few times would be a good idea), you should place the source in historical context and assess its significance. Consider how the document sheds light on relevant aspects of life in the post-Civil War South. In addition to saying something about the time period in which the document was written the era of Reconstruction you should then analyze the document itself. You might say something (in general terms) about the author, about the documents purpose, and about the message it conveys. If possible, you might note the documents intended audience. In analyzing the document and explaining its historical significance, you can certainly quote directly from the source (use quotation marks to indicate a direct quotation). In two pages, you will not be able to consider every part of the document. Thus, you should write about those sections of the source that you find most interesting, important, or illuminating. The aim of your essay is to use the document to shed light on an important element of the historical period in which it was written. In short, by looking carefully at the document and discussing its language, you should explain to your reader how this particular source helps us to understand some aspect of life in the American South after the Civil War.

Note: In writing the paper, you should base your understanding of the period and the document on the two essays in chapter one of Major Problems; on the material covered in the relevant lectures; and on the discussions you have had in your sections. You do not need to do any outside reading to complete this assignment.

reading response (PLEASE ONLY READ CHAPTER 2!!!!)

DO NOT GO OVER 150 WORDS
Reading responses + Other written work Other written work may be freewrites, brainstorms, sample paragraphs, etc., on a smaller, more low stakes scale than the more formalized projects below, to show progress and show your work towards more formal elements of your projects as with staged drafts, complete and on time = full credit.

Reading responses will be due the day of, assessed by a rubric (available soon), about 150 words each, and require 2-3 questions to ask of the material (as response is exploration and expansion, not just reception). Ill distribute a rubric that applies to both these and the kairos days (under files and via announcements). On days we have kairos days, I will not double up on a reading response.

The Elevator Pitch

An elevator pitch is a very useful tool to pitch an idea, new product or service, or yourself to a prospective employer. Entrepreneurs must have their elevator pitch honed so that any time the opportunity arises they can make their pitch in anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute in order to secure funding, support, or a sale.

Be sure to include your introduction, what you do now (this can be fictitious if you wish) what you can offer of value to a potential employer, what you want from the contact, and how you will follow-up.

Now you have a chance to make your elevator pitch make sure to time yourself!

You can do a search on a video website like YouTube for a video concerning making an elevator pitch.

Scenario

You get on the elevator at the 23rd floor in a skyscraper in midtown Manhattan in New York City. As you get on, you notice the CEO of the ideal company you want to work for is at the back of elevator.
