Prompt 1: Tone:

This poem is four stanzas long. While the speaker is mourning the loss of a loved one through the whole poem, the speaker’s tone changes as the poem progresses. Identify where the tone changes, how, and what effect that change(s) has on both the speaker and the reader. Were you able to empathize with the speaker all the way through the poem, or did he/she lose you along the way? Where and why?
