Asian American Religiosities

Living here in the United States, I realized that race is one of the most important elements in “social construction”. People have always asked me what am I but does it really matter? People act like European descents are superior than other race but that is not true and United States wouldn’t be a strong nation without immigrants. In the reading Religion, Race, and Orientalism, our professor mentioned European colonialists legitimated their conquest by imposing their notions of religion and race on Asians, Africans, and the indigenous people of Americas this has affected United States until this day.  Americans have this mindset that they are better and privileged and this translates to unequal treatment towards immigrants. I wont go into details but colored people face harsher laws when they commit crimes vs their counterpart. Non-colored people are treated better in terms of customer service such as in a restaurant, hospitality, etc. I also want to talk about unequal opportunities where white people are favored in terms of political parties, employment, education, etc.

Race has always been a very powerful force in our daily lives and it has always mattered in the United States. It influences many of the important decisions we make in our personal and social lives for instance, where we live or who our friends are. The social construction of race is the differences in our skin color that have lead our society categorize people into groups instead of individuals. I think we all struggle on how to differentiate Asian Americans, Native Americans, Latinos and Latinas and other groups. I am Filipino and sometimes my identity is constructed as either Asian or Pacific Islander.

This weeks course materials race and the implications of it in our lives were discussed. The socially constructed concept of race is employed heavily in our daily lives as we carry our lives in institutions that are embedded with race categorizations and in turn racism. The power of race and racism is evident in everything from our economics to our education. In A Class Divided, the childrens lower test scores when they faced discrimination, and higher when they did not. Constant oppressive discrimination, whether it is subtle or not, affects peoples mentalities and outlooks on life. In my personal life, minor skin tone differences have affected how people perceive my cultural heritage and how they classify me in the racial spectrum. Being a light-skinned Mexican born in America, institutional systems categorize me as White/ Hispanic yet I am not considered white for privilege purposes. As the reading Religion, Race, and Orientalism explain, institutional racism fosters inequities. The power of the notion of race within our systems restrict us and divides us as humans. This limits our progress as a society.

I believe that education gets affected with racial biases because of stereotypes that tend to be exploited in classrooms. According to some studies, teachers tend to offer a lot more assistance to other students than those who are of Asian heritage. I remember this one instance when I was attending a community college, and I needed some tutoring at a concept I was having trouble understanding. I went to the tutoring center and was given little attention and help. When I was able to sit down with a tutor, they didn’t help me a lot. They had assumed that since I was Filipino, I will be able to understand the topic even if they don’t explain the topic thoroughly. Unfortunately, I struggled with the topic, and it took more time than usual to understand it. Comparing this to my classmate who wasn’t Asian American, they were able to get help easily, and the tutor gave more detailed explanations. They also gave them handouts and suggested other learning media to help them further. According to an article by Alvin Chang on the Vox website, there is data from 2009 from two Princeton sociologists that states that an African American student who scores around 1000 on the SATs would have the same chance as Asian American who scores about 1450. Another way that race affects education is with college admissions. According to an article by Khrista Sayo and Elissa Choi, there are racial quotas that some colleges attempt to meet in order to create diversity in their campus. The term Asian Penalty where an Asian American student might not be able to get accepted at a college institute because of their appearance compared to an Aisan American student who appears to be `less Asian.  The readings “Religion, Race and Orientalism and What Does Race have to do with Religion ” gave me a much needed insight on Asian American still being considered as foreigners. I, myself, am born and raised in the Philippines, so I would understand whenever someone would ask me where I am from, but I can sense the uneasiness when my cousins and friends who were born in America get the same questions. I can remember this one scene in the movie The Karate Kid when Jaden Smiths told him to practice his Mandarin to the Asian man sitting next time. He tried to do so with succession, but then the man replied with. Dude, Im from Detroit.. I remembered laughing at this scene, but after reading about the struggles Asian Americans have with these kinds of assumptions towards their nationality.

The race is closely related to our daily lives. It is politically, economically and socially produced and changes over time. In the reading Transcript for Race and Racialization, the author mentions that race is not natural, not biologically determined, not written in our DNA or genetics, but created through social and public policies. It is a social construct. People classify others because of slight differences in skin color and cultural heritage. The power of race and racism fosters discrimination and inequality. It also limits social peace and progress. Take me as an example. Although the recent outbreak of the new crown pneumonia in China has been severe, although I have nt gone back or got sick, but because I m Chinese, when I go to the supermarket or store to buy things, those sales clerks sometimes take their eyes off The foreign customers around me are also farther away from me as if I have a virus that can infect them. I am deeply saddened by this. Although the epidemic is serious and I am Chinese, helping us to treat us well in special circumstances is not just helping ourselves and treating ourselves.

Reading and Lecture Analysis Journal

Value: 100 points

Due: See syllabus and/or iLearn

Objective:
Write 10 reading and lecture analysis journal entries that employ course materials from each unit.

These reading and lecture analysis journal entries provide you with an opportunity to do the following:

  • To enable you to understand your learning process;
  • To deepen the quality of learning, in the form of critical thinking or developing a questioning attitude;
  • To increase active involvement in learning and personal ownership of learning;
  • To enhance creativity by allowing you to write about what you found to be interesting or want to know more about;
  • To free-up writing and the representation of learning;
  • To provide you a chance to voice your ideas and to show that you are learning from course materials and resources;
  • To foster reflective and creative learning that promotes appreciation for human diversity, pluralism, multicultural, global perspectives, and lifelong learning.

Scope:
Each entry should be single-spaced and about one to two full pagees in length.
After you complete the assigned readings and viewed all other learning resources for a particular weeks lesson, you can select a topic or topics that most interested you, or that provoked a reaction, or that you have questions about and want to process. There is no right or wrong, as each entry will be measured and evaluated on its content, quality of analysis, and clarity of writing.

Note re: citing lectures. If it is Prof. Lee’s lectures, citations should look like this (Lee, “title of lecture”, week #).

Assignment:
Write 10 reading and lecture analysis journal entries that employ course materials from each unit.

The entries must do the following:

  • Must be one to two full pages in length, single space;
  • All entries must be in one Word document, as you will submit this file on TurnItIn through iLearn;
  • You must discuss a topic or topics or question or questions that you have after completing the assigned readings and other learning resources available on iLearn;
  • You must directly engage with at least three learning resources (one of them must be an assigned reading; the other two can be other readings, videos, land/or lectures) in each entry! [Note: You can impress Prof. Lee by using more than the required three learning resources!] If your entry does not fulfill this requirement, it will result in an automatic 0/10. Please do make sure you engage with a required reading from the unit of the week.
  • Not meeting required resources above will result in –3 points deduction for each of the two remaining required resource.
  • You must engage with assigned readings and other learning materials in the course by using proper citations and quotations using MLA, APA, Chicago, or Harvard styles for writing.
  • You must include a Works Cited that is properly formatted. Omitting a Works Cited will result in -3 points deduction.
  • You can use outside resources if you investigated a topic further, but not in lieu of the three required resources from each unit.
  • Writing is important, so make sure you write early and edit. Clarity of writing is important and an important skill to develop. In order to do this successfully, it is recommended that you do not wait until the last minute.
  • Be thoughtful in each entry. Provide analysis and link/connect as many class resources as possible to each entry. This is your chance to show that you have read the assigned readings, watch the videos and lectures, and have thoughtfully and creatively reflected on the data, ideas, and arguments of all learning materials.
  • There is no right or wrong answers in this assignment. You will be evaluated on the quality of the content.
  • Please see the Rubric for Writing Assignments for more information on how writing is evaluated.
    • Tip: Be aware of only summarizing: this assignment calls for analysis, which means your ability to: apply things you learn in the class to the real world; your ability to synthesize theoretical concepts (unpacking the theory, testing the theory, questioning the theory); your ability to critique arguments, ideas, theories covered in class materials; your ability to offer your own unique insights into an issue; and your ability to put various voices into a dialogue.
      For example:A says “…” which confirms B’s notion of ….. but differs from C’s conclusion about….; My experience suggest name-a-concept is valid because….; Name-a-concept argues that… which A, B, and Z validated in their research. However, another school of thought contends….

Cyber terrorism, by definition, is the politically motivated use of computers and information technology to cause severe disruption or widespread fear in society. The Center for Strategic and International Studies reported in March 2019 that Chinese Hackers targeted at least 27 Universities to steal Naval Technologies research, being one of many cyber-terrorist attacks. Besides these attacks, Hacktivism is a cyber-attack either by legal or illegal digital means in the pursuit of political ends, free speech, and the right of free speech. A most notable example would be the group Anonymous conducting numerous hacks from 2008 to 2012 against companies, organizations, and even governments that go against their moral codes. Behind the Tunisia Operation in 2010, Anonymous took down eight government websites with DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks in support of Arab Spring movements. Between the two Cyberterrorism is meant to instill fear and panic in society. At the same time, Hacktivism brings about a voice or an opposition to the government and other organizations to support a cause against them. Hacktivism is more politically based, pointing out flaws in the system raising awareness on our rights as human beings. Advances in technology lead to newer and different types of attacks either group can conduct. From viruses waiting for you to log into your bank account to massive-scale attacks against the banks’ systems themselves, terrorists, or hacktivists, have infinite ways to infiltrate and attack for their cause. Many laws have been put in place to combat these groups, acts put in place such as Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA) or Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2014 helping share information and build research and development to fight against cyber-attacks. Given the push against both groups by our government, I can’t help but feel concern for our rights and freedoms that may be infringed upon that our government or some corporation is doing while combating the whistleblower with Hacktivist tactics. It only keeps me and others mindful while fighting against cyberattacks that may be classified as cyberterrorism. There is a fine line on what would be a genuine noble act of hacking or something labeled as cyberterrorism placing information and lives at risk, its not so black and white as some areas can be considered grey. Thankfully some events in history, thanks to Hacktivism has brought good results that benefit society, such as Operation “Nice” which organized to hunt down the terrorist responsible for attacks in the French city, killing nearly a hundred people. Also, Operation Darknet which infiltrated 40 child pornography websites publishing 1500 plus names of frequent visitors to the sites stopping such activity. In these instances, I am for hacktivism and specific groups that act for the benefit of society and our rights as humans.

Many polynomial equations can be solved quite simply when the first step consists of factoring. Factoring is an essential skill to be mastered in an algebra course. While there are a number of different techniques that can be used to factor polynomial functions of all types, for our purposes we are going to focus on factoring quadratic polynomials of the form ax + bx + c. A number of different methods have been introduced to help students find the factors of quadratic polynomials. Some such methods of factoring ax + bx + c are Factoring by Grouping, Box Method, Star Method/Diamond Method/X-method, and Tic-Tac-Toe Method.

Respond

  1. Research one of the methods listed above or another method of your choice for factoring trinomials of the form ax + bx + c.
  2. Download and open the [DOWNLOAD] provided.
  3. State the method you are using and explain the process of factoring a trinomial in words, modeling the process by using examples that contain all the steps to factor the trinomial.
    • Note: A student who has little knowledge of factoring should be able to follow your steps in order to factor any trinomial using the explanation you provide.
    • Your guide must include a minimum of two examples of factoring trinomials using your chosen method.
    • At least one of your examples must include a trinomial of the form ax + bx + c, with a > 1 (e.g. 4x – 15x – 25, or 2x + 11x + 5).
  4. Verify that your factors are correct by expanding the expression, combining like terms, and comparing to the initial trinomial.
  5. Make sure to cite the sources you used for researching your preferred method.
  6. Submit your completed template to the discussion forum.
