Final Paper With Rough Draft

Now that you have read a number of short stories and essays, this is the fun part. You will choose your own primary source from the semester titles we have read.

HOW COOL IS THAT?

Remember, you can only choose something we have read in class. But the essay must be based on a source we have not yet written about.

Here are your specs:

POV: Third Person ONLY
Format: MLA
Word Count: Minimum 1,000
Primary Source: Your choice
Secondary: At least four sources
Works Cited Page: Absolutely
Borrowed material: At least eight instances of borrowed material

Things to consider:

PURPOSE: Remember, this is not an expository essay, it is an argumentative essay. Therefore you should be starting with your thesis statement, ensuring that the thesis addressed the topic in a way that motivated the reader to want to respond.

BORROWED MATERIAL: Be selective when choosing the borrowed material. Dont just find something to throw in the essay and cite it. That is not productive at all, not to mention it will get you a frowning face!
Let your borrowed material, since you are reading the sources BEFORE you write the paper, be your guide.
As you write, annotate, make note of what you like. Keep it. Then figure out how you can use it in your essay.

REVISE AND EDIT: I cannot stress this enough. You MUST give yourself time to revise and edit your paper. There may be paragraphs that would fit better in a different section of the essay. There will definitely be errors. Give yourself time to revise and edit in order to submit the best paper possible!

I recommend that you save each draft separately, for example, Essay 1 Draft 1, Essay 1 Draft 2, Essay 1 Draft 3 and so on and so on. Doing so ensures that you keep all the original content just the way it came out, but as you make changes the previous copy or copies remain in their original state.  There is no worse writers feeling that revising and edit, erasing what you previously wrote, only to realize you need it.

STAY IN THE LITERATURE. CRITIQUE THE LITERATURE. DO NOT WRITE AN ESSAY INSPIRED BY THE TOPIC OF THE LITERATURE. YOULL GET A FROWNING FACE. –
A huge mistake is to understand the literature, be able to identify the topic, and instead of writing about the literature, you write about the topic the literature covers.

For example, The Story of an Hour presents an unhappy wife during a time when women had no other options than to be a wife.

If a student were to write an essay exploring how different being a wife is now to how it was then, and how wrong it was during that time in history for women not to have options, and how  . . . Well, hopefully you get it.
This essay would receive an unfavorable grade. It does not critique the writing. It creates a completely separate work inspired by the writing. Even if this essay has little speckles of Mrs. Mallards thoughts and actions, it still would not be about the essay. It would only use those speckles to fulfill the borrowed material requirement. The presence of those speckles would be meaningless.

  3. Are all the sources used throughout your essay included on the Works Cited page?
  4. Have you added a concluding paragraph?

Documented Repot

Documented Reports (DRs) are three-page reports students write to discuss research critically, practice one or more research writing skills, and explore possible subjects for a final research paper.  For this assignment:

  • Read these sources for the assignment instructions and to help you find and cite the two database articles you need in addition to the M3 assigned article you wrote about in Discussion 3:
  • Type DR3 on the to format your paper correctly; use one of the citations from the Works Cited page for the assigned article you evaluated and delete the rest.
  • Write and add citations to the Works Cited list for:
    • A related article from Academic Search Complete, and
    • A related article from another database
    • Retain alphabetical order in the citations
  • Use one or more of these resources to help you write the citations:

Choose logos if your argument will require a presentation or summary of facts and an objective, reasonable tone.

  • Use third person address or even passive voice
  • Select objective and neutral diction to present the facts
  • Try to use a reasonable sounding three-part series

Choose pathos if you want the reflective to appeal through or to share emotion commonly held beliefs.

  • Use inclusive address: we and our
  • Select fair but subjective diction
  • Try to use a highly invested four-or-more-part series

Choose ethos is you have a personal investment in the subject and wish to express a tone of assuredness and authority.

  • Use first person address: I; my
  • Use a mixture of objective and subject diction to both commitment and reasonability
  • Try to use authoritative, didactic-sounding two-part serials

For this journal entry, address each of the following prompts:

  • Submit a draft of the conclusion for DR3. Try to reiterate the problematic solution or thesis the articles in DR3 share. Expand on this problem with a reflection of your own using an appeal of logos, pathos or ethos.
  • In a separate paragraph, explain why you feel the appeal you chose (logos, pathos, or ethos) was more effective than the others.

Plan on reading the set of articles more than once for 1) comprehension and enjoyment; 2) comparison/contrast of topics; and 3) critical observation of this modules central research skill: textual referencing. Remember that, while it may be easier to skim the articles or only read them once, reading these articles several times for the purposes outlined above will deepen your understanding of the content and, ultimately, benefit you later in the course.

Read each of the following:

Short Essay For Discussion Board

Once again we’re going to imagine our ideal world that we began creating last week.  This time, we’ll specifically think about issues of human-environment relationships, and what that relationship might be in an ideal world.

How do you imagine what the relationship between humans and nature ideally should be, and how does that differ (if at all) from the actual relationship we currently have in our society? There’s little debate that we live in a society that is environmentally unsustainable in the long term. What kinds of cultural changes might lead to creating a more environmentally sustainable society (customs, norms, behaviors, beliefs, etc)? Thinking about the concept of the “two-toolbox” approach, how might this approach benefit the modern world? Is there anything from the examples discussed in the chapter (The Elder Brothers, the Australian Aborigines, the Dagara, the Lakota, the Hadza) that we could learn from, and/or incorporate into our culture?

Critical Thinking Assingment 6

Because Coates’ essay is so big, you will use his essay again to write your next week of work.

Pick three different quotes from The Case for Reparations by Ta-Nehisi Coates (604).

2. Write three abbreviated body paragraphs, using the PIE format: (Point, Illustration A, Illustration B and Explanation).

POINT: What is the problem presented by the quote? (1 sentence)

IllUSTRATION A: Write how the author presents the quote-summary. (1-2 sentences)

ILLUSTRATION B: Insert the quotation with page number. (1-2 lines)

EXPLANATION: Why is the point or quote a problem?  (1-2 sentences)

3. In this PIE formula, do not write the words I, you, us, we, and me.  These words are considered informal or non-academic. Instead use people, society, student, reader, person, or individual. Make sure that the PIE structure is typed, using the MLA format.

Please note that the Reflections must have:

1. MLA format-look up the link if you are not sure
2. Single spaced the entire assignment or page
3. One page only
4. Times New Roman, font 12
5. Quotations with page numbers
6. Point and Explanations do not have the author’s name in it.
Be careful. I will deduct a point for each error. If you don’t single space your writing, I will not read it.

Your Assignment Is To Write An Essay Of Five Or More Pages, Plus A Work Cited Page

Your assignment is to write an essay of five or more pages, plus a work cited page. Your
essay must have a title, a thesis statement, a beginning, middle, and end. I suggest you use
prewriting techniques to generate ideas. Write an essay in which you analyze the excerpt from
Niccolo Machiavellis book,
The Prince
, that appears in our Barnet book. The purpose of an
analytical essay is to divide a topic into several sections in order to give the reader a better
understanding of it. Machiavellis thesis is this: . . . it is necessary for a prince [political leader]
wishing to hold his own to know how to do wrong, and to make use of it or not according to
necessity (644). Machiavelli seems to be arguing here that the ends justify the means.
Based on Machiavellis arguments, does former President Richard M. Nixon (as
portrayed in director Oliver Stones film Nixon) represent a Machiavellian Prince? Why or
why not? If your answer is yes, explain how Nixon exemplifies the fictional Prince
Machiavelli writes about.
Please use examples from each of the following sources to support your thesis:
1.
Machiavellis
The Prince.
2.
Oliver Stones film
Nixon.
Is President Richard M. Nixon, as portrayed in the film, a
Machiavellian politician? If you are arguing against Machiavelli, you may use
examples of Nixons failures (such as the Watergate scandal and the bombing of
Cambodia) to support your argument. If you are arguing in favor of Machiavelli, you
may use examples of Nixons successes (such as the opening of friendly relations with
China) to support your thesis.
3.
Your own knowledge of politics and politicians. You may include information on the
historical Richard M. Nixon, and/or other historical or contemporary figures.
You may use other sources to support your points, but you must use the film
Nixon
and
the excerpt from Machiavellis
The Prince
in our Barnet book as sources in your essay. On the
next page is a sample works cited page using these sources. Your final draft must be typed word-
processed according to the MLA style.
Relax and have fun with this assignment!

Sand County Almanac By Aldo Leopold

Please respond to all 6 of the question sets below with full paragraphs and original thoughts. Use short quotations from the text or any of the other course materials we have read so far to support your ideas and perspectives and make connections.

Sand Count Almanac Foreword

KEY CONCEPT: COMMUNITY

Leopold encouraged people to expand their vision of the world around them to include the natural world in their community as they would their neighbors. When people begin to look at plants, animals, soils, and waters in that context, they may consider them in a different way.

QUESTIONS

1. Compare your values with Leopolds: Is the ability to see geese more important to you than television or social media? Are you one who can live without wild things or one who cannot? How do various groups in American society currently determine the value of wild things? How is this demonstrated? How do disagreements about values play out in our government or society?

2. Leopold talks about the need to get the company back in step. Who is the company in this metaphor? What does Leopold suggest might be needed for the company to get back in step? Has the definition of conservation changed or stayed the same since Leopolds time? What does Leopold refer to when he talks about community?

Thinking Like a Mountain

KEY CONCEPT: HUMILITY

Leopolds own misdeeds led him to be very concerned about the impacts of those with good intentions, but incomplete information. According to Leopold, humanitys blind pursuit of success needs to be re-evaluated.

QUESTIONS

3. Politicians are often criticized for changing their minds or positions on issues. However, it is critical for scientists to be able to do just this, sometimes referred to as a paradigm shift. Can you think about a time when learning allowed you consciously to change your mind about something? Is this the goal of education?

4. This essay identifies many different perspectives, that of the wolf, the hunter, the rancher, and ultimately the mountain. Leopold is challenging the reader to re-read the natural order from the mountains perspective. What does that mean to you?

 5. Leopold describes the intense power of seeing the green fire die in the wolfs eye, but he didnt understand until many years later why his actions felt wrong. Have you ever done something environmentally related you thought was OK, but regretted it later once you became more aware? What made you realize you were mistaken?

6. At the end of the essay Leopold seems to be asking if complacency, or safety, will ultimately result in danger. Wildness reminds us that we cannot, or perhaps even should not, try to control everything. Do you agree? Why/why not?

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the text and review the required articles for this week.

Taking on the role of the expert in the treatment of schizophrenia or depression, you will prepare a presentation for a group of physicians who are seeking your opinion on the treatment of patients with these disorders. For this interactive assignment you will create and upload a 5- to10-slide PowerPoint presentation as well as a five-minute screencast of the presentation to share with your peers.

For this presentation, select either schizophrenia or depression as the basis for your presentation. Begin by creating your PowerPoint presentation. In the presentation, include information which explains the neurotransmitter theory behind the disorder and how the drugs used to treat the disorder affect those neurotransmitter systems.  Evaluate the risk and benefits of treating a patient with the most common type of medication and of not using drugs to treat the patient. In your evaluation, examine issues such as the rate of success with the most common drugs used as well as the incidence of side effects with these same drugs, including mortality associated with drug use. Then consider not using medications to treat the disorder. Take into account the natural course of the illness, the rate of spontaneous recovery, and the rate of mortality when untreated. You may also incorporate the use of other modes of treatment into your evaluation.

Your PowerPoint must include your presenter notes in the notes field to indicate what you intend to say during the screencast and well-chosen images to enhance the understanding of your audience. Remember that your screencast will be a maximum of five-minutes, and use your speaker notes to ensure that you will be able to present your materials within this time limit. (You may access for additional assistance in creating an effective visual presentation.) Once you have created your PowerPoint you will create a screencast presentation of up to 5 minutes in length using any screencasting software you choose. (Quick-Start Guides are available for for your convenience.) Attach your PowerPoint file to your intial post and include the URL for your screencast in the body of the post before submitting it.
