Comparing Empires
Task: Compare The Great Ming Empire, The Mughal Empire, The Safavid Empire, or the Ottoman Empire. It could be any of them, but I need at least two.
For this essay assignment, you will compare and contrast any two of the empires discussed in this unit, discussing similarities and differences between them. Possible topics that you can consider for the comparison and contrast in the essay are strengths and weaknesses of the empires and/or rulers, economic policies, military systems, empire expansion efforts, wars and conquests, forms of government and/or administration, religious systems and policies, social and cultural developments, problems faced within the empire, empirical legacies, and interactions between the two empires, if any.
Expectations and Criteria for Success:
You should base your discussion with the information in the course content, but outside research is allowed if needed. DO NOT use Wikipedia as a source. As always, be sure to keep track of where you find your information so that you can provide citations in your final essay. Essays should be typed in 12-point font with a simple, clean font such as Times New Roman. Use 1″ inch margins on all sides and double-space the text. Your essays should each be around 1000 words.
Successful essays should be carefully organized, with strong thesis statements and specific evidentiary support. In your introduction, introduce both of the empires that you will be discussing and lay out the topic for the essay. The body of the essay will include the comparison and the contrast of the empires. Conclude by discussing which of the two empires you think was more effectively established or had a stronger foundation, including the reasons why you reached this conclusion. Be sure to revise and edit carefully.

or placing a smaller, local event in a larger historical context.
Relies more on secondary and less on primary sources.
Critiques from my instructor
I have attached a copy of your thesis with suggested edits. There are a few questions you need to think about as you make revisions:
1. What is your thesis? I don’t see a well-defined argument being laid out in your introduction. You need to explain what you intend to contribute to the history of this field that is different from what scholars who have written on this topic have said about it. Your paper seems to go back and forth between discussing the positive and negative aspects of the War on Drugs without taking a position yourself or adding anything new to this field.
2. How are you using primary sources to support the argument you make? I don’t really see you using any primary sources. It appears that you are repeating information that you found in secondary sources. A thesis needs to be based on primary source research.
3. Are all of your points clearly and concisely made? Beyond the editing I suggest, there are larger structural issues that need to be addressed. What you’ve written is very repetitive. You include the same information in multiple places throughout the thesis and make the same statements numerous times, sometimes even in the same paragraph. You need to be concise.
Now at this point switching from thesis to project in which, I can use secondary sources but I need it not to be repetitive, basically follow the critiques of my instructor to the point.
I’m sending both drafts the one titled “Incarceration” is the old one and “War on Drugs” is recent.
I will need graphs etc. footnotes as well

Discuss economic, political, and/or social differences between the North and South that eventually led to the Civil war.
Summary Part B: Causes of the Civil War
Between 1800 and 1860, a number of economic, social, and political factors contributed to the development of tension between states. Specifically, tension developed around issues of how to best expand the US economy, the extension of slavery into the territories, and relationship between the states and the federal government. Debates and differences in opinion over these and other matters of national importance eventually led to the United States civil war.

1. List, explain, and analyze the divisions in American life over what the concepts free and American meant during the period in question. ii. Explain the origins, motivations, and backgrounds for the developments. In other words, you must specifically address why each party discussed thought or acted in that way.

TopicBeginning in the late nineteenth century, advancements in science and technology increasingly intersected with national politics, security interests, and military agendas. Did national politics and military agendas promote or hinder scientific inquiry, autonomy, and ethics between the late nineteenth century and 1945? In responding you
might consider the following in order to write a well-informed essay: how ideas of progress, professionalization, and collaboration shaped the sciences, how the scientific community viewed nationalism and entertained dissenting views, whether scientists or government officials proved more successful in maintaining control over the development and use of new technology, and how scientists themselves defined their autonomy and ethical viewpoints during this time.
