6/1

Much of the focus this semester has been on professional ethics in organizations, though it has been acknowledged that your own personal ethical paradigm strongly influences your workplace choices. At the periphery, the social responsibility aspect of ethics has been hinted at; that is, to what degree are you obligated to others (regardless of who they are or where they live) to act in an ethical manner? Paying taxes, voting, obeying stop signs, pulling your cars to the side of the road when an emergency vehicle passesthese are all demonstrations of a personal commitment to social responsibility and ethical behavior.

Focus your discussion on the following:

  • To what degree should organizations (non-profit and for-profit) bear social responsibility?
    • They provide jobs, pay taxes, and provide services and goods but how much profit is enough?
    • At what  point should they be societally obligated to give back, or to give back more than they currently do?
  • At what  point should they stop producing products that contribute little to societys welfare, even if it means fewer profits?
    • If organizations are people, too (as stated by Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election [Huffington Post, 2011]), can they be trusted to do  the right thing?

Learning Transfer Why?

After reading and watching the items following these assignment instructions, analyze the importance of the learning transfer process. In your paper, write a compelling summary to a CEO analyzing why the transfer of learning process is important using it in each area discussed this week.
It uncovered a quite different story, the employees wanted:

To feel valued and that they are recognized for a job well done.

To make a difference for others

To have the opportunity to learn and grow through education and experiences

To have good balance among their professional and personal responsibilities

To be included and to be able to be appreciated for diverse thought, and

At the end of the day, feel satisfied, fulfilled, and enjoy what they do.

After knowing what the WIIFM is for the employees what are your suggestions for Tim? Remember to use limitations of memory, cognitive overload and diminished learning when answering the Why? for the learner.

The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

Write between 1,250 1,750 words (approximately 3 5 pages) using Microsoft Word in APA style, see example below.

Use font size 12 and 1 margins.

Include cover page and reference page.

At least 80% of your paper must be original content/writing.

No more than 20% of your content/information may come from references.

Use at least three references from outside the course material, one reference must be from EBSCOhost. Text book, lectures, and other materials in the course may be used, but are not counted toward the three reference requirement.

Cite all reference material (data, dates, graphs, quotes, paraphrased words, values, etc.) in the paper and list on a reference page in APA style.

References must come from sources such as, scholarly journals found in EBSCOhost, CNN, online newspapers such as, The Wall Street Journal, government websites, etc. Sources such as, Wikis, Yahoo Answers, eHow, blogs, etc. are not acceptable for academic writing.

Learning Transfer

We have established that organizations invest in learning to address business needs and opportunities. Learning objectives are, in effect, business objectives. In solid organizations usually there are systems in place to set, measure, monitor, and reward achievement of business objectives. We usually do not find those same systems in place for training and development.

Talk to any group of laymen or professionals about what s broken in the current learning and development process, and most will tell you its the lack of serious post – training follow – through (Zenger, Folkman, & Sherwin, 2005, p. 30).

D4 states high impact learning drives the transfer of learning back to the work of the enterprise. They do not leave it to chance or individual initiative. Instead, they put in place systems and processes to actively encourage and manage the transfer process. Learning transfer is the process of putting learning to work in a way that improves performance.

In the chapter on D4, we introduce the concept of learning scrap and the high cost of doing nothing to ensure learning transfer. The elements that define the transfer climate and determine the results that training ultimately delivers is fully explained. We review what it takes to improve performance and discuss breakthroughs in the management of the learning transfer process made possible by technology.

Take a minute and watch Josh Kaufman talk about how to learn anything and think about how this can help trainers make the learning transfer happen.

Assignment Instructions

The United States is in a period of major transition from an economy where mass production manufacturing industries constituted the core to a one in which industries based on information and knowledge form the core.  In addition to the shift from mass production to knowledge-based enterprises, both the workforce and consumer population has also changed significantly.   These changes have stimulated changes in employment laws and regulations as well as in management and human resource policies and practices.

Read:

  1. Muhl, C.J.  The Employment-at-will Doctrine:  Three Major Exceptions.
  2. Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination
  3. K. Reardon, “The Memo Every Woman Keeps in Her Desk. – The case study concerns a woman who believes that she and other women are being discriminated against in her company.

Forum:

  1. If Liz Ames at Vision Software sends the memo she has written to her boss and is subsequently terminated would any of the exceptions to the “employment at will” doctrine apply to her case?  Would she be protected under any federal law?  Explain your reasoning.
  2. Josie Zaroft, a 56 year-old senior software engineer at FutureApp, has informed the human resource department that in advance of scheduled gender reassignment surgery, she would like the staff to refer to her using only female pronouns.  The head of HR, Susan, once dated Josie when she was known as Joe, a biological male.  Susan calls Josie in for a performance review and states that Josie will not receive a previously-promised promotion because her transition will make it difficult to manage the team of older male tech workers who just wont understand this she-male fad. Susan further states that Josie must be crazy and is too old to be performing drag in the office.  Has Josie suffered from any discriminatory practice under federal law? Identify which federal laws prohibiting job discrimination might apply, and explain why.

Reply to this person’s respond in 3-4 sentences

  1.  This is a very hard case, we can look towards the likes of Charlie Rose, Matt Laur, and others for advice, of the laws versus the street rules. Legally Liz should not have been fired. She was using HR to express her opinions against sexism, but in reality, as seen with Rose and Laur, the stores were covered up and the people who raised the flags were fired. Liz says He’ll dismiss me as a radical feminist or a chronic complainer. The employer is always at a huge advantage, Liz could raise the flag, and then they could fire her for something else that could be totally fake, and it would be very hard to prove it otherwise.  Technically she is protected under federal law, but the company would most likely fire her for something else and it would be nearly impossible to prove that she was fired for her memo.
  2. Josie for sure is facing a discriminatory practice simply because the government says harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, genetic information, or age; are protected under the Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination Questions And Answers. It is very simple, they cannot legally not promote her due to gender or a surgery of any kind. It is not only wrong but illegal.
