Week 8 Discussion 1 LEG 100

The responsibility of the directors of a corporation is to provide a return to shareholders on their financial investment in the corporation; in other words, shareholders expect to make money on their investment. Corporations such as Facebook, Google, and Apple are financed through the sale of billions and billions of dollars in shares purchased by investors. Sometimes, however, the duty to maximize profits runs contrary to legal, but still questionable, business opportunities.

Assume that youre the director of one of the corporations listed below and have been presented with the business opportunity described in the scenario. Would you advise the corporation to accept the opportunity? Make sure to fully explain your answer, considering both the financial return expected and any related ethical concerns.

ToyCo has just been informed that its wooden trains produced in China contain lead paint and can no longer be sold in the United States. However, a distributor offers to negotiate a deal with a foreign company to sell the trains in a South American country that has no laws addressing the presence of lead paint in childrens toys.
BabyHealth is seeing decreasing sales of its powdered infant formula in the United States due to more and more mothers choosing to breastfeed their babies. In an effort to offset these losses, BabyHealth chooses to sell their formula in third-world countries. However, it is widely known that the water sources in these countries is often contaminated and not boiled prior to use.
After producing 10 million versions of its new smartphone, PhoneLand discovers that due to a manufacturing oversight, some of the phones may catch fire if left in a car on a hot day. While the worst case financial impact from the phones catching fire is $10 million in damages, recalling and repairing the phones will bankrupt the company.

Developing an Investigation Plan

Assignment 3: Developing an Investigation Plan

A child was playing in a local park with his brother. A car pulled up as they were leaving the playground. A man inside the car motioned for the two (2) boys to come over. The man asked the two (2) boys where the nearest convenience store was located. He then stated that he was not familiar with the area and asked the boys to show him the way and he would take them home afterwards. He also stated that he would buy them whatever they wanted if they agreed to show him. The youngest brother got into the car with the man and they drove away. The older sibling ran home and told his mother what had happened. The younger brother was not heard from that night and a report was made to the police. The next day a body was found in a dumpster behind a local garage. It was the younger brother, who had been strangled to death and was nude.

Imagine that you are the lead investigator in this case and develop a two to three (2-3) page investigation plan in which you:

Outline the main steps that you would take immediately as it relates to the investigation of this case. Support your response.
Propose your methods for evidence collection. Next, predict the main evidence that you would expect to find regarding the investigation of the death of the boy and the arrest of the suspect. Support your response.
Propose the main investigative techniques that you would use to investigate the murder in this case. Provide a rationale for your response.
Use at least two (2) quality academic resources as references, such as journal articles, newspapers, magazines, and publications from law enforcement associations. Note: Wikipedia, blogs, and similar websites do not qualify as quality academic resources.

SECURITY AND DOMESTIC ANTI-TERRORISM S

Cops on the Front Lines; The First Defense Against a Strike, Foreign or Homegrown

Police have been told a group of terrorists has just launched a series of coordinated attacks targeting the L.A. subway system. We know that there are hostages, and there are reports of injuries, but most alarmingly, they have detected the presence of a device which appears to have dispersed some sort of chemical agent.

Watch the terrorism response simulation: Intense Counter-terrorism Training With L.A. County Sheriff’s Department – Crime Watch Daily and answer the following questions:

How many life-threatening situations are represented here?
Besides the Elite Counterterrorism Unit, what other teams/ agencies, more than likely, would be involved in this scenario? Explain.
Does your town/city have a terrorism response component? If so, how is it structured?

Public Safety

Case Study
Using the case study scenario, prepare a paper that identifies the various potential ethical issues and analyze the impact on the organization. The body of the Case Study shall be 8-10 pages, excluding other material such as the cover page, abstract, table of contents, graphics and tables, and references.
The Case Study Paper shall contain:
    Cover Page
    Abstract
    Body of Paper (8-to-10 pages)
    References Page
The paper shall be formatted as follows:
    APA 6th edition
    1 inch margins
12 point font, either New Times Roman or Arial font style
Double spaced, making sure there are no “extra” spaces in between paragraphs
Properly formatted Section headings as appropriate

Case Study Scenario
In 1918, an influenza pandemic killed an estimated 675,000 people in the United States If a pandemic of this scale occurring today, an extrapolation of the 1918 pandemic would result in an estimated 1.9 million deaths in the United States if public health actions are not effectively undertaken. The impact on towns, cities, states, and the nation could be devastating. Experts estimate that a pandemic will occur every 30 to 50 years. Based on this information, the probability of another pandemic within the next twenty years is very real.
You are a public safety official in your community and you are responsible for working to develop emergency pandemic influenza plans and  coordinating federal, state, and local responses. Pandemics occur in waves and endure for at least 18 months, further complicating effective public safety planning. The role of local governments in the planning and implementation processes is paramount. Planning for this health hazard and corresponding threat to public safety, however, can present numerous public safety obstacles.
A myriad of ethical issues will arise with the next influenza pandemic. Some of the decisions regarding these matters will be unprecedented. While banning public outings, closing public schools, and asking employees to stay at home may be troublesome measures for local public officials to undertake, the decisions regarding the allocation of limited resources such as vaccines and antivirals, the imposition of restrictive measures on the public such as isolation and quarantines, and the level of risk that the public workforce should be expected to face while assisting individuals infected with the influenza virus are much more formidable. While the federal government will provide only broad guidelines for state and local government emergency planners, specific decisions regarding vaccination at the local level, maintenance of emergency response and lifesaving services, and provision of other critical needs may have unprecedented legal and ethical implications. As a public safety official, identify as many ethical issues as you foresee your community having to face in the next influenza pandemic. Briefly discuss what solutions you might offer to resolve each ethical issue identified.

Evaluate Organization X to Recommend Items for Change

t is your first day as Director of Personnel Administration for Organization X. You walk into your office to find a letter on your desk from a former employee who very recently separated from the organization. The letter explains many experiences the employee witnessed or personally experienced before resigning. The employees letter is provided as an assignment prompt included in your weekly resources.
You take the letter to your boss, who instructs you to do two things. First, rank the issues in order from what you believe to be the most important to the least important. Briefly state why, citing the literature as support. Second, create a new policy or program to address what you believe is the most important issue in this letter. State why, citing the literature, along with one possible way to measure the effectiveness of the policy one-year post-implementation.
Also, create an infographic highlighting the new program or policy in a way that employees will understand and support. Some free infographic tools include Piktochart, Canva, and Venngage.

Loss Prevention Policies

Assignment Details

You have been working for about 10 years within the private sector as a fraud investigator. You are now the director of fraud management of a well-known amusement park. Because your amusement park handles hundreds of thousands of dollars and credit card information, you must have a great fraud prevention program. Management is aware of a need for increased requirements for the amusement park to maintain a system of internal control to help prevent and detect fraud. The chief executive officer (CEO) of the amusement park, Mary Moore, is also interested in using a pro-active posture toward building an antifraud prevention program, including exploring the use of a pro-active auditing approach for fraud discovery. You have had discussions with the internal auditor and your external fraud investigators, as well as accounting and consulting firms for pro-active approaches for detecting fraud.

Management is aware that eliminating the opportunity for fraud is critical. Recently, the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) have adopted a comprehensive guide for managing the business risk of fraud.

Answer the questions below in preparing this paper of 35 pages. As you answer each question, you must provide support or evidence that will enhance and empirically prove your answers. Academic criminal justice articles or real-life criminal justice findings that are not found in journals or other academic sources must be used when supporting your answers. Use American Psychological Association (APA) style for all cited sources, including your reference page.

What are the benefits of a comprehensive control program? If you were advising this corporation, what would be the specific benefits for it?
What procedures should be considered for detective controls, including independent checks and a system for documents and records?
Because an amusement park deals with a large amount of cash and electronic funds such as credit cards, discuss the possibility of a fraud hotline as part of your program. Remember that an amusement park is just like a corporation in organization and has goals for making profits. How can a hotline be implemented as a tool for preventing and detecting fraud?
What recommendations would you offer the CEO to encourage a culture of honesty, openness, and assistance?
Do you think that a culture of honesty, openness, and assistance can exist as suggested by Ms. Moore? Or is it a utopian idea with no understanding of how human nature works? Provide examples to justify your answer.

Mass Media, crime, and justice

After reviewing the reading topics and course learning objectives, students will select a subject of interest for a 7-10 page research paper supported by a minimum of 5 academic peer reviweed sources. The paper is due at the end of Week 7. In your response to the discussion board Research Paper Topic, post the topic you wish to research, the course learning objective with which it aligns, and why this topic is of special interest to you. I will approve, comment, or disapprove. Please wait for approval before you begin your research. This should be completed by the end of Week 2. The following are the six course learning objectives from which you can base your topic:
1.Examine the organizational structure and the administration process of the U.S. justice system.
2.Differentiate among the various components that influence the administration of the criminal justice system.
3.Describe the use of force and the use of discretion in criminal investigation.
4.Examine the administration of the courts when addressing sentence alternatives.
5.Analyze the American correctional system and its use of alternative programs when administering justice.

Research paper topics must be based upon one of the six course learning objectives. When submitting the selected research topic by the end of Week 2, students must identify not only the topic of their research paper but also the course learning objective with which it is aligned.

When writing your research paper be sure to focus upon the aspect of criminal justice that you are addressing from the perspective of the course learning objective with which it is associated. You must support points made in the research paper with scholarly resources. Your personal opinion must be limited and will not be a determining factor in the final grade. Instead, your grade is determined by how well you support your argument utilizing the materials discussed in this course and research and reference material you locate.

What I do not want is a regurgitation of what is in the readings. Expand on the readings; do not repeat it. Direct quotes should be used sparingly and limited to instances where the original meaning would be lost if not directly quoted. Document your facts utilizing the current APA style edition.

This paper is to be submitted to me as indicated on the Course Schedule and Grading Policy Summary Table.  The paper is to be in the current APA Style format and the body of the paper is to be between 7 and 10 pages.  The body of the paper does not include the title page, table of contents, appendix or references. Abstracts should not be included and will not count as part of the body of the paper if included.

This is to be of high quality, free of spelling and grammatical errors, and of original work. Plagiarism will be dealt with harshly.  You are to title your paper by your last name.  For example, an individual with the last name of Smith would name their paper smith.docx with .docx being the MS Word file extension.  You are to submit your paper by uploading it to the Assignments area in the course site prior to the due date as indicated in the Course Schedule and Grading Policy Summary Table.

You must submit your research paper to this assignment as a Word document. Other formats will not be accepted. The date of your submission is based upon the date you successfully submit your research paper in the correct Word format.
