well informed? Are there any unstated assumpons in the document? Are there any addional
purposes of the policy that are not explicitly stated?
We want to know your opinion, BUT, you must always back it up with academic sources. If you think
it was a great policy, why? Who else supports this? What research has shown the posive impact of
it? If you disagree with the policy, also, why? Have any academics provided evidence of a negave
impact of it in their research? Tell us about it.

Assume that you are the Director of Homeland Security, a federal agency charged in part with ensuring that Americans are protected against foreign and domestic terrorists. Agents have taken Amar Anzi into custody. Based on information supplied by an informant who has infiltrated the organization to which Anzi belongs, you have reason to believe that Anzi has knowledge of a series of planned airplane hijackings reminiscent of the 9/11 attacks and that the hijackings will be carried out imminently at various unidentified U.S. airports. You have the utmost confidence in your informant, who has provided consistently reliable intelligence information in the past. Moreover, various aspects of the informants accountincluding Anzis use of surreptitious e-mail accounts, his training in explosives, and his participation in piloting classeshave been corroborated. Anzi has steadfastly refused to respond to questioning. You must decide whether to authorize interrogators to torture Anzi in an attempt to gather information from him. What will you decide, and why?

MUST USE THE 4TH 5TH AND 6TH AMENDMENT TO HELP YOUR ANSWER. EVERYTHING WRITTEN MUST BE BASED OFF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, THE LAW AND THE CONSTITUTION.

One 3-page, typed paper will be required each week throughout the semester, addressing a topic assigned separately (a list of assigned topics will be provided). A fourth, blank page must be stapled to the 3-page paper. The 3-page papers should be based exclusively on the assigned readings and your analysis of the corresponding issues; no additional research is expected. The 3-page papers must be typed (size 12 font) and double spaced with top, bottom, and side margins of at least one inch, and they must not exceed three pages. All papers are due at the beginning of the class period for which they have been assigned. Late papers and electronic submissions will not be accepted. The 3-page papers will be graded based on: (1) how well they integrate relevant readings; (2) the substantive analysis provided, including use of relevant principles and facts; and (3) writing style. The thoughts following class discussion expressed on the attached blank page will also be considered in the assigned grade. Papers will be evaluated on a 10-point scale: 10-9=A; 8.5-8=B; 7.5-7=C; 6.5-6=D; 5.5 or below =F. The grade received on the weekly papers will represent 75% of the course grade.

The first several chapters of the Mallicoat text cover various criminological theories that have been presented as possible explanations for female criminal behavior. For the purpose of this assignment, I want you to put on your criminologist hat and select a theory to explain a female offender’s criminal behavior.  You can use any of the theories used in the course text, but don’t feel limited to do so – if you have another criminological theory you feel would better explain the behavior, please do so.

We know that sometimes, women and girls who have been victimized retaliate against their abuser. In some cases, these females are charged with criminal offenses. While there has technically been a violation of the law, there are mitigating factors that we would like the courts to take into consideration.

For this assignment, I want you to further investigate the Aileen Wournos case. A case where the perpetrator is a a woman and could be considered  both the victim and the offender. This is a case where the female offenders criminal activity is somehow linked to her victimization (e.g., a domestic violence victim who kills her partner, a child molestation victim who kills her molester).

Our subject: Aileen Wuornos

Aileen Wuornos of Florida born February 29, 1956 was molested and victim to an abusive father who later died in prison. Wuornos was pregnant at fourteen leading her to then drop out of school and leave home to live a life on the road as a hitchhiker. After a short period hitchhiking, she began soliciting prostitution, not soon after the string of killings began. Ms. Wuornos would be picked up at various locations along the highway, where she would then shoot her male counterpart(s) before robbing them and stealing their cars. In total Ms. Wuornos killed seven middle aged men from December 1989 to November 1990, before finally being brought in on an outstanding warrant charge. Ms. Wuornos claimed all the killings were in self-defense believing that the men each time was attempting to rape her, however once her prints turned up on some of the victims belongings she was found guilty. She was executed in Florida via lethal injection on October 9, 2002.

Conduct your own research and then answer the following questions:

Briefly summarize the the facts of the victimization and how it led to the offense.
What was the sentence imposed? Do you feel the sentence imposed was appropriate? Too harsh? Too lenient? If you feel the sentence was too harsh, you need to provide mitigating circumstances ~ reasons why the court should have considered a lesser punishment. If you feel the sentence was too lenient, you need to provide aggravating circumstances ~ reasons why the court should have considered a more severe punishment. If you feel the sentence imposed was appropriate, provide reasons why you support the decision.
Select a criminological theory to explain why Wournos behavior could be considered self dense or why it shouldn’t be considered self-defense.

The Roles, Responsibilities, and Work of Three Major Local and/or State Intelligence Units

A major component of this class is a minimum 2250-word (excluding the separate cover, abstract, and
reference pages), APA-style research paper. It represents a substantial effort on your part to research
and write an in-depth paper. No more than 25% of the written assignment in this course may be attributed
to referenced sources. Your paper must be 75% original thought. Again, your cited work and quotations
must not exceed 25%. You must use and cite a minimum of five primary sources (with no more than two
being internet sources) in the text and References page. Dictionaries and encyclopedias are not

not cut and paste from other sources. Your failure to cite sources by using in-text citations and failure to
use APA quotation formatting where necessary will result in referrals as potential Academic Code
Violations. Whole or partial papers may not be submitted from previous courses or classes to fulfill this
course requirement and will be referred as a potential Academic Code Violation.
