Public Policy Paper & Presentation:
You are expected to write a 12-15 page policy position paper (not including cover page, illustrations,
appendices and references) that addresses a criminal justice policy in the United States of America. You
are expected to choose a position, make relevant recommendations and offer a critical argument with
respect to your chosen policy topic. For this assignment, you must recognize that public policy is a
decision or action of government that addresses problems and issues. In order for a policy to be
considered public policy, it is widely accepted that it must to some degree have been generated or a least processed within the framework of governmental procedures, influences and organizations.
Public policies are funded through public resources and backed up by the legal system. The threat of
sanctions (e.g., financial penalties, loss of liberty, and possible loss of life) through the policy itself, or
failing to comply with the policy, are defining characteristics of criminal justice policy. The focus of
your public policy position topic must align with the focus of your theory and research methods
papers. In general, the public policy paper must demonstrate an ability to effectively formulate an
argument and provide logical and empirical evidence backing that argument.

Organized Crime and Money Laundering

The paper must be at least 2500 words, excluding the title page, abstract page, and reference page, and must adhere to the APA sixth edition writing format. Please reference the APA Guide link under Resources. If your paper does not comply with this format you will lose points.
Please cite at least five scholarly references for your paper with no more than two from an internet source. Please be aware that websites such as Wikipedia are not scholarly sources. Access the Universitys online library resources to find scholarly journal articles, etc. Proquest and EBSCO may be helpful, but remember to limit your search to scholarly journal articles. Please remember to review the information available for locating and citing proper sources in your syllabus. Additional grading criteria will include clarity of presentation, quality of content, mastery of content, care and attention to detail, organization, originality of presentation, and the value and interest of the presentation, as well as proper grammar and punctuation. The research paper also needs to incorporate at some place in the paper a discussion of the Saint Leo Core Value of community as it relates to the topic.
The assignment must be your original work. You are required to use no more than 15% of others quoted work when completing any assignments within this course of study. Your research paper must therefore be 85% original. No previously submitted papers, articles, reports or project, in whole or in part, to any university or college will be accepted.

Criminal Justice

The purpose of this assignment is to give you, the student, an opportunity to explore, in-depth, a specific job classification within the Criminal Justice System. For this assignment, you will interview someone of your choice who works within the system.

First, carefully select the job category in which your interests lie. Next, do some research and outreach to locate a real person who holds that type of job. Contact this person and arrange to interview this person. Using the questions and topics provided below, conduct the interview. Be sure to take copious notes, or to record the interview. If you are going to tape record the interview, be sure to acquire consent from the person being recorded.

Describe the duties of your job. (Ask if there is a written job description, and if one exists, ask if you could have a copy)
Describe a typical day, in some detail.
Describe how your job fits into a larger segment of the Criminal Justice System.
What job categories work under you? To what job categories do you report? (superiors) What job categories do you help support?
Describe the types of criminals you encounter in your work and how you interact with them.
What about your job frustrates you the most?
What about your job do you see as most beneficial to criminals and to society?
How did you get interested in working in the criminal justice system?
How did you prepare for your job? (college?, major?, training program? Other work experience?)
What skills do you use most frequently in your job?
List a couple of lessons you think people should learn before entering into a job like yours.
After the interview is finished, you can write up your findings in a short report (5-7 pages) using the outline below as a guide. This paper is about the career/job within the Criminal Justice System, not just about your interviewee. Your interview will provide most of the information you will need to adequately present the career to your readers, but some additional research using credible sources may be needed to cover some sections. I would like to see you use two additional sources, one web-based, the other a book or article from a research journal. The sources should be properly cited in the paper and referenced in a “works cited” page at the end of the paper. You may use either MLA or APA styling for the paper. The Job report is due by March 8. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Health Hazards

Instructions

After your initial review of the operations and safety data sheets (SDS), you have determined the sampling you want to perform at Acme Automotive Parts (AAP). The table below lists hazards you want to sample and the sampling/analytical methods you decide to use. You can access the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) methods at https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/nmam/default.html and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) methods at https://www.osha.gov/dts/sltc/methods/toc.html.

Hazard Possible Method Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL)

Manganese Fume (Welding) NIOSH 7302 5 mg/m3 (OSHA Ceiling)

Copper Fume (Welding) NIOSH 7302 0.1 mg/m3 (OSHA 8-hour TWA)

Lead Fume (Welding) NIOSH 7302 0.05 mg/m3 (OSHA 8-hour TWA)

1,2,4 trimethylbenzene (Paint) OSHA 1020 25 ppm (ACGIH 8-hour TWA TLV)

Toluene (Paint) OSHA 111 50 ppm (ACGIH 8-hour TWA TLV)

Xylene (Paint) OSHA 1002 100 ppm (OSHA 8-hour TWA)

Metal Working Fluids NIOSH 5524 0.5 mg/m3 (NIOSH 10-hour TWA REL)

Noise (throughout plant) None 90 dBA (OSHA 8-hour TWA)

Choose one hazard from the welding area, one hazard from the paint area, and the metal working fluids, and prepare one paragraph for each hazard (three paragraphs in total) answering each of the following questions:

Which sampling media will you be using?

What flow rate will you use?

How will you calibrate the sampling train?

Calculate the minimum sampling time you will require to be able to detect concentrations at the OELs listed in the table. Show your work in calculating the sampling times.

Will you collect personal or area samples? Explain why.

Are there any compounds listed in the method that might interfere with your sample?

Are there any special storage or shipment requirements for your samples?

Prepare one paragraph that concludes how you would evaluate noise exposures in the facility. Discuss what type of sampling instrument you would use, how you would perform calibration, whether you would use personal or area samples, and which areas at the facility you would include in the evaluation.

Your assignment must be a minimum of two pages in length, not including title or reference pages. Your assignment must use at least two references. One must be gathered from the CSU Online Library; the other may be your textbook. All references and in-text citations must be formatted according to APA standards
