Case Study: Conflicting Clients

• Jennifer Grace, First year member of her CPA firms management group
• Tom Ward, CFO of Fantastic Developments, Inc., a client

While reviewing the current-year audit working papers of Coshocton National Bank (CNB), the engagement manager, Jennifer Grace, noted something curious. In the working papers related to loan valuation, Jennifer saw that the commercial loan of Fantastic Developments had been randomly selected for confirmation but that Fantastic had not responded to either the initial or second confirmation request. The audit staff disposed of this loose end by alternate procedures: examining cash collections (which had become somewhat sporadic) and vouching to underlying loan documentation, including a set of recent (unaudited) financial statements that showed Fantastics solid financial position and operating profitability.

Jennifer noted this reference to Fantastic Developments because this private company was also a client of her firm. In fact, Jennifer had served as the audit senior on the prior-year audit of Fantastic. She knew that the company had been struggling for a couple of years and had experienced recurring operating losses. Her knowledge of Fantastic did not reconcile with the discussion in the audit working papers related to the financial statements furnished to the bank.

When Jennifer contacted Fantastics CFO, Tom Ward, and inquired about the companys apparently miraculous turnaround, he was noncommittal and unhelpful. Tom replied that business had picked up. He apologized for not calling Jennifers firm himself because he had been so busy, and then he told her that Fantastic had decided to engage another CPA firm for its accounting and auditing needs. Although confused, Jennifer obviously couldnt reject the possibility that this abrupt dismissal was a direct consequence of her inquiry.

As a result, Jennifer wonders whether the financial statements which Fantastic furnished to the bank as a basis for a loan application are fraudulent. The bank apparently has no such suspicion, however.

In this unit, you learned about sociological theories of crime. The course textbook and the unit lesson provide multiple ideas on the causes of criminal behavior, the sociological theories. For this assignment, you will compose an essay that explores this topic. To write your essay, complete the following steps: 

1) Analyze the sociological theories presented in this unit. 

2) Select five theories that you feel would benefit your community. Rank them in order of most effective to least effective. Describe how the theories could be applied to criminal behavior in your community. 

3) Take the theory that you believe would benefit your community most effectively and find four sources you can use to look at both sides of the issue, two supporting your choice and two not supporting your choice. Analyze and argue both sides of the theory selected.

   Each student will identify an ethical dilemma facing a business in their immediate area and write a research paper.  If you cant find a topic from the metro area, it can be in the state you live in, or Country if you live outside the United States. An example if you live in Tanzania might be Mining tanzanite environmental implications. An example thats NOT business related (and not appropriate topic): Is ghosting someone while online dating ethical?.

 Paper should be 15-20 pp in length, double spaced and submitted in one Word document with clear titles, paragraph structure and proper grammar. Gather information from multiple sources and provide a brief background or summary of the facts. Always cite any paraphrasing and quotes from your textbook, lecture, or other sources. Apply the concepts weve studied through Unit 6 and the briefing skills youve been practicing to identify the ethical issues presented and discuss. Discuss both sides of the issue before reaching a conclusion, and justify your conclusion and how you arrived at that opinion.  

Submit one MSWord document with clear labeling and distinctions for each response.  To obtain full points you must apply the concepts weve studied to date and use the tools and skills studied in your response.  Always cite any paraphrasing and quotes from your textbook, lecture, or other sources.
