qualitative coding interview questions

Return to the Developing Research Questions assignment from Module/Week 3. With interview transcripts in hand,

create a code book for interviews.

Begin in small groups, look at the ways people coded their respective interviews.
See if there is agreement on major and minor codes.

Discuss the different kinds of stories each coding scheme might tell.

Cut and sort by major and minor codes looking for patterns, relationships, further categorizations.

Make note of analytical findings. Hold onto these clumps of coded data for a future exercise.

Ruben/Raskin Primary election

In 2006, longtime Maryland State Senator Ida Ruben was challenged in her pursuit of the Democratic nomination for the Maryland State Senate in the Democratic primary by Jamie Raskin, a political activist and lawyer. Ida and Jamie represented two different generations of Maryland residents and lived in two different adjoining counties. It was a hardfought and sometimes tempestuous battle for the nomination which Jamie eventually won. And, in this overwhelmingly Democratic district, winning the Democratic Party nomination virtually assures victory in the general election. And that’s what happened. So this battle was what really mattered in winning this particular seat.

Find attached the mail materials from both the Ruben and Raskin campaigns.

Please review them and write an analysis of what you see from each campaign, focusing specifically (but not necessarily solely) on the following questions:

What is Ruben’s message as an incumbent seeking renomination as evidenced by her materials?
Does she do an adequate job of presenting her narrative and theme in the context of her mail pieces?
Does her slogan derive from the narrative and theme? Does it work?
How do the visuals (colors, photos, drawings, typeface choices) add or detract from her message(s)?
What is Raskin’s message?
Are his narrative and theme clear? Does his slogan reflect his narrative and theme?
What about Raskin’s visuals? Do they add or detract from his message(s)?
There is, in the middle of the campaign, a battle over allegations made about Ruben’s responsiveness to constituents and Raskin’s status as a “real Democrat.” Pick out the pieces that were mailed in conjunction with that battle for control of the message. Assess each candidate’s approach and level of sophistication and success in raising and responding to negative allegations.

Critical Infrastructure

In 2011, the Southwest experienced a critical power failure. Communities, businesses, and other societal resources went dark. The end result was human and business failure to plan and protect the power grid and stations. This was considered one of the largest power failures in California history. Many restaurants and grocery stores lost revenue due to spoiled food. Many households were impacted as well- schools were closed the next day and some businesses. If youd like to read more on what happened in 2011, you can find that here: https://www.nerc.com/pa/rrm/ea/Pages/September-2011-Southwest-Blackout-Event.aspx

For this requirement, you will be developing a resilience plan. Choose a critical infrastructure incident that impacted an area of our country (whether it was due to a natural disaster, human error, or human attack) to use as supportive evidence of what to do/what not to do, however please avoid writing about big events such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, etc. If you need assistance with picking a topic, please let me know.

Ready.gov provides information and resources for businesses and communities:

https://www.ready.gov/business

Key questions/areas to cover in your paper:

Summary of the previous incident

1) What was the previous incident (ie.: if a great fire occurred, what happened? who was involved? what kind of disaster was it- natural or human caused?)

2) How did the previous incident impact the surrounding communities or greater? What were the critical infrastructure key resources that were impacted?

3) What was the resolution/recovery for the incident? Are plans in place to not let it happen again?

Protecting a business (your choice) and creating a plan

4) After lessons learned, create a plan for continuity/resilience for a business. How would you protect your business from incidents occurring and damaging it?

Think of physical (and cyber) features of your business, training employees, and what kind of partnerships should your business be involved with at the local, state, and federal level.

Paper requirements:

Please use Microsoft Word: 12pt font, Times New Roman, 1-in margins throughout and double-spaced.

Paper structure- Title page, abstract, table of contents, main paper, reference page.

Page requirements- roughly 6-10 pages or whatever is needed to cover the point (not to include the title page, abstract, ToC, or reference page). It’s ok to have less or go over as long as you make your point directly.

You will need to have about 3-5 references minimum (Wikipedia is not a solid reference but an “ok” place to start- more will be explained on this).

Please do not write “fluff.” Points will be deducted as well if you do not cite your work. Please avoid plagiarism at all costs. Consult with the instructor if you need help

Ethics

Critical Thinking Assignment

This final week encompasses everything you learned since the first week and how to apply the concepts in articulating and writing a well-written and well-researched paper. You will look at the YouTube video from Paul Harvey titled “Freedom to Chains”.

After viewing the video, your Critical Thinking Assignment should cover the following: As like Rome, how could the U.S. be destroyed from within? Use the topics discussed in the video. For example:  Moral Decay, Social Decay, Cancel Culture, Economically, Lack of personal Integrity,

Ethics and Ethical Behavior, Corrupt Governance, Moral responsibility, Riots (Policing and the role DHS), Socialism, Use examples and research from Aristotle, Socrates, Virtue Ethics, Formalism, Kantian ethics, Duty, Utilitarianism, John Stuart Mill, selfishness, Kohlberg’s theory, Gilligan’s ethics of caring, Emile Durkheim, Cesare Beccaria, Formalism, Nonfeasance, Misfeasance, Malfeasance, John Rawl’s theory of Justice, Civil Peace and Liberty.

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to assess your ability to evaluate and analyze the concepts of morals, ethics, and justice as how would it apply if you were in DHS or Law enforcement. Please use ethical critical thinking in which you base your conclusions on evidence rather than preconceived ideas.

It should also strengthen your understanding of how best to format a succinct and relevant paper using APA format. (See Resources below.)

Remember, there are key points that must be a part of every title page, abstract page, and reference page. Your title page, abstract page, and reference page DO NOT count towards your page count for the completion of this assignment. Failure to follow APA guidelines will result in a points reduction from your final grade.  Be sure to ask questions if you are unsure of anything. I will be happy to help in any way that I can.

Students Position:

Students will need to clearly state their position for each issue chosen while recognizing the limits of their position. Students will need to provide evidence of having considered their position from alternative perspectives. Students should also consider how their position will impact their life.

Conclusions:

Students will need to state their conclusions and implications logically, systematically.  Their conclusions will be developed from the synthesis of the information from their previous essays. The students conclusions and implications must be insightful and significant. Students should consider what might be the economic, political, social, or educational implications of their position.

Helpful Guidelines:

Write your research paper in Third Person – https://www.aresearchguide.com/write-in-third-person.html

Evidence (Will be part of the body.)  Provide information from research on your topic.

Analysis – (Will be part of the body). Thoroughly examine your topic, question or concern regarding premise, methods, and/or conclusions. Your decision must focus on at least four of the eight key questions to ethical critical thinking listed below.

Will all responsibilities be met based on my opinion?
Does my opinion mirror my character?
