law and policy

Our legal system is a crucial part of maintaining oversight of liberty and of the two other branches of our Federal and State governments, the legislative and executive branches. Our judges have come under attack by President Trump in various settings when decisions have not upheld his Administrations perspectives (see other resources in this weeks folder for videos).  Lets take a look at exactly how individuals become Federal judges or Supreme Court Justices.

Remember – there was an empty Supreme Court seat and President Obama’s candidate, Merrick Garland was NOT EVEN INTERVIEWED by the Senate – no confirmation hearing at all. Who got that seat? how did that happen – keep these things in mind as you read. As justices retire, the President of the United States will nominate replacements who support his viewpoints thus shaping the courts and laws for decades. Think about the process!!

What happened during the confirmation of the latest Justice Brett Kavanaugh? How might his confirmation change the court and decisions?

Select a judge or justice and discuss their credentials and background.

Select a case for which the judge or justice is famous and discuss why that case is important.

THE INTERNATIONAL REGULATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS: TOWARDS ABSOLUTE EXCLUSION?

My doctor had sent me the following instructions to employ on my research proposal. Editing and rewriting is required in the light of the two following paragraphs to be done on my research proposal. I would also like to ask if you could implement new amendments after its first delivery for me? Thank you.

“My concern with your proposed project at this stage is in regards to the research question(s) that you pose: the originality of the project and its potential to advance the discourse (which is required for a PhD). A number of commentators have already been discussing the legal potential/impact of the TPNW, and it is fairly clear that it would be very difficult to see it as having binding customary effect without the support of the nuclear powers, which is not going to happen any time soon. I think its fair to say that the discussion has already moved to questions of e.g. political impact, possible shifts in perspective towards humanitarian underpinnings in discourse and the relationship between disarmament and arms control in this context. I am, for example, currently supervising a PhD considering some of these wider aspects, which is already half completed. I do not think it is possible to base a PhD project on the legal impact of the treaty at this stage in the way that you envisage. In addition, other aspects of your project, such as the correctness of the ICJs conclusions regarding the compatibility of nuclear weapons with IHL principles such as distinction is of course important, but has been written about extensively since 1996.”

“I therefore think it is necessary for you to identify a more novel research question or approach that allows you to move some of these debates forward. You clearly have excellent knowledge in this area as I say, your background research work in this proposal is excellent and I would be interested in working with you on a topic in the nuclear law field, but my view is that you need a stronger research question for a viable PhD proposal.”

Community policing work

The responsibility of implementing any community-policing effort lies with the Chief Executive office of the law enforcement agency. Many of these community policing efforts have to do with violence in low income areas. Navigate to  and review the material provided by the organization. Using peer reviewed articles and other professional publications including local newspapers, search for information about Kansas City Nova and learn how the community has responded to the program.

In approximately 150 words, summarize what you have learned and cite any sources you have used. Then, in approximately 300 words, address the following issues;

1) Analyze the role of the Chief Executives office in this effort.

2) Evaluate the work of the Chief Executives office and suggest further solutions that might be helpful.

3) In regards to maintaining the momentum of the program, how would you advise the Chiefs Office to deal with periods of time when violence increases rather than decreases?
