Cultural Geography

This time I want you to do follow up post regarding #190616965.

Your follow-up should consist of two parts, and be about 150-250 words total for both parts (or more, if you’d like). You may choose to respond to the same classmate or to two different classmates (one for each part).
1. First, comment on a classmate’s meme/macro/gif. The comment can take any form; you can draw connections to something from your daily life or another meme, highlight certain elements and explain why you think they’re notable, comment on its cultural specificity, etc. However, it should be substantive, i.e., do not simply state that it is “funny”, “interesting”, or things of the like.
2. Second, answer/respond to a classmate’s question. Again, this should be substantive; do not simply state it is “an interesting question”, etc.

I attached the screenshot of post which I want you to reply to. I thought this classmate’s post is relevant to your post #190616965.

Also I have uploaded the last week discussion pdf which was about different readings, but you can see how classmate respond to other classmate’s posts. As you can see, it can start with “Hi, classmate’s name”.

green marketing

Research and give one example of green marketing that you believe to effective and trustworthy.  How so? What is the product being marketed?  What makes the marketing effective?  What makes you believe them? (3-5 paragraphs)

Research and give one example of greenwashing.  What is the product being marketed (cannot be Fiji water)?  Why do you believe that this is an example of greenwashing?  Explain how you feel deceived. (3-5 paragraphs)

Restoration Phamplet

Select a scenario from the list below:
1. There is a species of fish (with low numbers) that is having trouble traveling up and down the river because of a dam.
2. Chose an area that is economically depressed but has a lot of species diversity, you need to protect the species while providing jobs for locals.
3. An animal is being poached for its horn which is believed in some cultures to cure many diseases, it is not critically endangered.
4. The demand for farming is increasing, which is destroying native forests and affecting their biodiversity.
5. An animal is starting to become isolated because it is afraid to cross roads created by deforestation.
6. Local birds typically migrate over the winter, but people are feeding them and thermal pollution at a local stream is keeping the water warmer the birds are not migrating, resulting in water pollution.
7. A drought has been going on for a period of time; the water needed for homes, businesses, and farms has decreased lake and river levels impacting the amount available for local flora and fauna.
8. Species are being found dead on local beaches due to plastic.

Create a pamphlet addressing the following:
1. What is the issue and why it would work
2. Describe the restoration method you selected and why it would be best (with at least 2 examples of how it has worked in similar situations from peer reviewed sources)
3. Time frame to complete the plan (include short and long term objectives)
4. What is the end goal of the restoration project

Sustainability Assessment and Planning

Address four (4) of the following  five (5) questions in approximately 750-1000 words for each question. Additional research on the questions will likely be required but you will not need to include any citations or references. Your answers must demonstrate you command of the course content thus far as well as your ability to building upon given content with your own research, applying your opinions and practically apply what you have learned.

Responses

My assignment is to respond to at least two classmates by defending which device made the largest difference in the history of science and technology. So respond to their discussions in 4 to 5 sentences.

This was the discussion post:
Initial prompt: Choose an electrical or magnetic device (resistor, capacitor, diode, fuse, transformer, motor, generator, ammeter, voltmeter, etc). In your 300-400 word initial post, explain the purpose of the device and how its invention changed circuitry, power transmission, or power generation.

These were my classmates responses:
1.
A diode is an electric component that is specialized to act as a one-way switch (Braza, n.d.). A diode is responsible for conducting electric current in only one direction, while blocking current from the opposite direction. In simple words, a diode acts as a one-way switch for current in a built-in electric field. A diode has two sides, a positive side and a negative side. The polarity in a diode is determined by an anode (positive lead) and a cathode (negative lead) (Fluke Association, 2021). While most diodes only allow current to flow when positive voltage is applied to an anode, there are very few that only allow current to flow when a cathode is charged.

A diode may play two different types of roles in a circuit. A diode is forward-biased when it allows current flow. On the other hand, a diode is reverse-biased when it acts as an insulator and does not permit any current to flow. Diodes are also known as rectifiers due to the changes they cause in alternating current (ac) into pulsating direct current (dc) (Fluke Association, 2021). There are different types of ratings diodes go by, it is all based on their type, current capacity, and voltage.

Each diode is assigned a different rating. If the rating is exceeded the diode may fail and will either allow current to flow in both directions, or prevent the current from flowing in either direction (Fluke Association, 2021).

Diodes are used in LEDs. LEDs only glow when there is positive voltage present (James & Granath, 2020). The diodes are used to only allow positive voltage through.

2.
A generator is a dynamo or similar machine for converting mechanical energy used for backup emergency power.  It is essentially an electric motor working in reverse conversion with many similarities to engines (i.e., automobiles, aircraft, ships, and trains) and provide nearly all of the power for electric power grids.

In 1831, Michael Faraday, a British scientist, discovered electromagnetic induction, which is when a conductor moves in a magnetic field, electrical changes could be created and directed to create a flow of current. By 1832, Faraday was able to apply electricity to a functioning electrical motor which paved the way for other inventors to hone and perfect it as well. The invention of a generator changed circuitry by powering the electrical motor and the importance of the technology.

An electric generator is a device that changes kinetic and electrical energy through electromagnetic induction.

In electricity generation, a generator doesn’t create electricity, however, it is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical power for use in an external circuit.

The mechanical power for an electric generator is usually obtained from a rotating shaft which is equal to the shaft torque multiplied by the rotational, or angular, velocity.  Generators are available in many different fueling options such as, diesel, natural gas, and portable/ mobile types. (Worldwide power products, 2021)

They also provide electrical power and electrical generators housed in power plants making power rapidly available. A generators output of electrical power is measured by kilowatts and in a circuit analysis, you often use it to stand as an idealized version of another component, such as a battery, transistor, etc.

A portable generator is a diesel or gas fueled device that engine turns an alternator that creates usable electricity up to a certain level of wattage that can plug electrical appliances or tools directly into the generator outlets. All of these machines convert mechanical energy to electricity for transmission and distribution over power lines to domestic, industry, and commercial consumers.

Q.1  Distribution of Volcanoes: Why most volcanoes in the world (95%) are located along mid-oceanic ridges or found in chains parallel to trenches?

Q.2: Sea-floor topography: Why are trenches bordering chains of volcanoes and island arcs? What happens at trenches? How do oceanic ridges form?

Q. 3 Ocean floor age: Why the ocean floor is progressively older as you move away from the oceanic ridge? Why there is no ocean floor on Earth older than ~ 200 million years?

Q. 4: Ocean floor magnetization: Explain the origin of the magnetization pattern of the ocean floor.

Q. 5: Distribution of earthquakes: Why earthquakes occur only in narrow zones of the Earth (i.e. mid-oceanic ridges and trenches)?

Q. 6: Distribution of Mountain Ranges: Why large mountain ranges are also located in such zones? What caused these mountains to form?

Q. 7 Wegener’s arguments: How does plate tectonics confirm the evidence and theory of continental drift that Alfred Wegener proposed? Why the continents seem to match up like in a puzzle? Why are fossils of long-extinct animals found on different continents? Why rocks bordering the continents around the Atlantic Ocean have the same age, composition, and geologic structures? How can the puzzling pattern of glacial striations on different continents in the southern hemisphere be explained? How can we explain the occurrence of Paleozoic glacial deposits near the equator only on some continents?

Q. 8: Hot spots: What is the origin of chains of seamounts and volcanic islands that display a straight alignment and a regular age progression from older to younger?

Policy Memo

For this assignment there are 2 parts you need to complete:

– Identify and summarize the topic of your policy memo. (atleast 135 words)
Choose a science &/or energy policy issue related to physics that interests you. The topic of your memo is very important, so do some research and think carefully about it.  You should choose a specific issue that is of interest to you, that you can understand, that you can find adequate information about, and that is actually a question with different possible answers.

– For the actual written memo (Part II), you will need to use a broader and deeper range of sources. (atleast 135 words)
You also need to determine who your audience will be. There are at least two considerations.  First, who will be interested in your topic, and who might be able to act on the recommendations that you make?  Second, do you plan to write your memo for a layperson or for someone with technical knowledge?
