This is the first of four graded discussions as indicated in the syllabus.  In no less than 150 and no more than 300 words, express your opinion on whether industrial forest plantations are good, neutral or bad, if they have a place in today’s forestry sector, if they can or cannot coexist with natural forests, and/or any other aspect relevant to this discussion.  You must publish your main post before you are able to see those from your classmates, after which respectful follow-ups or replies are welcome (but not required).  Your grade will be based on 1) the quality of your writing (i.e. clarity to convey your ideas), 2) depth of your comments and 3) justification for your arguments (each worth 1 point; up to 1 point will be taken off if the length of the post below 150 or above 300 words).  You will not be judged based on your opinion, but opinions must be sustained with coherent and factual arguments.  You are allowed and encouraged to consult the literature to provide an informed decision, but references are not necessary given that your post must be kept at the big-picture level (you will still be checked for plagiarism so just make sure your post is yours, word by word).  Enjoy!

A graphical abstract should be a one-image file and should visualize one overall
process or make a major point clear.
Use a sensible aspect ratio: 4:3, 16:9, or 21:9.
For ease of browsing, the graphical abstract should have a clear start and end,
preferably “reading” from top to bottom or left to right.
Try to reduce distracting and cluttering elements as much as possible.
Font: Times, Arial, or Calibri at a large enough size for display at a reduced size
on a webpage.
File type: PDF or PPTX.
No additional text, outline or synopsis should be included. Any text or label must
be part of the image file.
Do not use unnecessary white space or a heading graphical abstract within
the image file.

This assignment requires to write essays in response to all of the following:

Part A     With respect to economic factors in Latin America, describe export dependence, import
                substitution, debt crises, and the impact of free trade agreements such as NAFTA.

Part B    Identify observed and potential impacts of climate change in China and Japan over the
                last 50 years.

Part C     Compare and contrast perspectives on multiculturalism and indigenous social
                movements in New Zealand and Australia.

Unit 3 Discussion
Bacterial Genetics

Discuss how bacterial and archaeal DNA is organized, as compared to eukaryotes. Explain the application of plasmids and restriction endonucleases in genetic engineering, with examples.

Unit 4 Discussion
Toxins

Differentiate between Endo- and Exotoxins. Using specific examples of bacteria, explain how the toxins they produce contribute to the virulence of those organisms.

Keep the discussions separate. They should have a reference page. The discussions should be at least 100 words each.

Write an essay discussing the similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cellular organisms.
Include the cellular characteristics, morphological, and, functional properties.
Identify prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells using specific examples (you must include 3 examples of each cell type.)
Show how the cellular characteristics allow for microbial survival within a therapeutic environment.

For this assignment, you will write a research essay, or create a presentation, about a scientist who contributed knowledge to the field of chemistry. Your essay, or presentation, should include the following information about your scientist:

Describe your scientist’s contributions and innovations to his or her field.
How did your scientist’s research and data influence future use of his or her findings?
Describe the background, interests, or goals that affected your scientist’s observations and conclusions.
Once you have selected a scientist, you will need to locate at least three different reliable resources to use to conduct your research. You may use textbooks, the Internet, or library books. These resources should be cited within your presentation and should be listed in a bibliography that you submit with your essay, or slide presentation. Use the Citations, Essay Writing, and Finding Reliable Resources tutorials to guide your writing.

If you have another method by which you would like to present your research findings, please have it approved by your instructor before you begin writing. No matter what presentation style you choose, be sure to use complete sentences and paragraphs, and include all of the necessary research required.
