Weaving a Story from Our Homework

For this assignment, you’ll actually be working to write a story based on your answers to the homework.  You’ll see that there are 10 questions on the homework.  To do this assignment, you can pick any 5 questions that you would like the answer to, and then use those as the basis for writing your story.

Please read it carefully, since you’ll need to do things like format the assignment with highlighting where you put in your homework answers, so I can read it more easily.  Also, if you want an example of a story that uses homework answers, so you can get an idea of how to do this, check out this example:

This homework aligns with the chapter of our OpenStax Astronomy textbook mentioned in the title of the assignment (also you can find this on the last page of the Syllabus).

Finally, don’t forget that I check submissions for plagiarism using software that checks all submissions against each other and the Internet… and if you copy from another source, I’ll be forced to refer you to the Dean’s office for Academic Fraud.

2.    Electromagnetic radiation (explain its propriety in terms of wave length () and frequency (v).
3.      Explain  how ground state  and  excited state  of electrons differ (  provide  examples  that support  your explanation)
4.      What are quantum numbers? Include  definitions of orbital, shells, sub shells  and the meaning of the letters s, p  d  and f.
5.      Explain electron configuration of atoms, Hunds rule and the significance of valance electrons.

The search for life in the universe

The key course themes are the origins of life, the evolution of life/intelligence, and the searches for life. You should find at least three, and preferably more, recent (i.e., within the last 3 years) sources on which to base your report. Books, magazines or newspaper articles are acceptable, as are internet web pages if you identify your sources and conclude they are providing reliable information. (For example, NASA or ESO web pages are suitable. Wikipedia may be used in a supplementary fashion only. TV documentaries and blogs are not acceptable sources of information. Unacceptable sources are articles from the Daily Mail, Buzzfeed, Fox, Natural or Breibart News. Any publication with a fringe topic (i.e., creation, alternative medicine, etc.) should be treated with caution. Your report should not use the lecture notes or the required text as primary references, and neither should it use matter copied directly. Your paper must go into more depth and detail than the textbook or the class notes on your specific topic. Footnotes and detailed referencing are not required, but your paper must include a bibliography containing the sources from which material was taken. If you use a figure or table, you must cite the source at the place where the figure or table appears. Your paper will be graded on its relevance to our course, on its originality (i.e., its synthesis of different sources and contrasting or competing ideas), on its detail and on the quality of the research you performed in its writing.

4. (25 marks) Compose a short essay outlining everything you know about one of the topics listed below.
Important points to consider when preparing your essay:
–    Your short essay must be between 2 and 3 typed pages in length (12pt Times font, 2.54 cm margins all around, 1.5 line spacing).
–    For any essay longer than 3 pages, excess pages will be removed and not considered in graded.

–    Essays should include discussion related to material/device preparation, structure, explanation of properties, and applications.
–    Figures/diagrams in the text and do not contribute to the page length.
–    This question will be marked on depth of understanding, clarity of writing, formatting (e.g., subscripts and superscripts), as well as spelling and grammar.

Visit some of these sites and write a review of the one you found most interesting. YOU MAY NOT DO SECTION 1 (too basic). Include some graphics, tell us what drew you to this topic and what you learned from it. At least a page long – make it interesting. Some of my favorites from section II include GAPMINDER, World Mapper, 100 People.

Astronomy, our solar system or other solar systems.

Astronomy, particularly the study of our solar system or other solar systems.

Very Important: Before you do anything, decide on a title for your discussion, and write “TOPIC: (fill in your title here)” on the first line of the page.
Next, leave a blank line, and then start writing your post about the new topic

Your discussion choices can be related to anything focused on Astronomy and/or planetary exploration. Here are some examples of the most popular types of posts:
Current events in the news that are related to astronomy and/or planetary exploration
A documentary that you watched about astronomy or planetary exploration
A topic that was brought up in the textbook or in lecture.
You can discuss anything you wish to discuss, so long as you choose topics that are focused on Astronomy, particularly the study of our solar system or other solar systems.

This exercise is about tracing the origins of the clothes and shoes you wear and about asking Why? The cost of labor…is important, but it certainly isnt the only factor in determining where garments and shoes are made (Domosh et al. 2013: 345).
Your essay must first describe briefly the historical and contemporary patterns of trade in primary and secondary production related to the garments industry (see textbook and PPT files for details), and their spatial distribution, in your own words. Then you will discuss the most important characteristics of the garments industry including its evolution and current state. A summary of these facts can be found in this exercises PowerPoint presentation as well.
As it is mention in the book, The Human Mosaic: … the textile and garments industries have historically been very footloose, able to move production facilities to locations that suit manufacturers, often because of the low cost of labor. In todays global world, that tendency is even more pronounced, with manufacturers of clothing and other garment-related materials outsourcing many aspects of production and often subcontracting with other companies to complete different tasks in different parts of the world (Domosh et al. 2013: 345). Please note that this quote includes several key definitions that must be included in your essay. You can find additional key definitions in the Instructions PPT file.
Any geographically-based study must answer three broad questions: Where? Why? and, So what? (or, in other words, why is this important?) For example, where are the garments you selected to compose this exercise where made and where are the headquarters of these companies located? Why are these items made in these countries? What are the similarities of the countries were these garments are produced and those where the company headquarters are located? What are the differences? In answering to the So what? question (why is this important?) you must use the information you have included in the first two sections (Where? and Why?). This is an overview of the principles characterisitcs of todays garment industry and must include a conclusions paragraph of your analysis. While answering these questions, you must also consider each of the locational factors mentioned in the course textbook and the corresponding PPT (i.e., labor, markets, state policies, consumer trends), and try to generalize the why of what you wear.
This essay must include a minimum of at-least 800 words in length. You must also demonstrate knowledge of the topic using key definitions related to this topic. In addition, it is required to include at- least one additional reference (textbook or other reputable source; not Wikipedia) in the essay portion of your work that relates to this topic making a proper citation in your essay. You must also include this

reference in a separate page (Bibliography/Reference), making a full citation of all sources cited in your essay. Making a notation in your essay but not including it in your bibliography, or the other way around, makes this source invalid; hence, it will not count. Note that this portion (including an external source) corresponds to 5% of the final grade of this assignment.
Technical Aspects: Your essay must conform to the following formatting: 12-point font (Arial, Times New Roman, Garamond, or Book Antiqua), one-inch margins all around, double-spaced, and number the pages. Essays that do not format their work accordingly will receive a 10-point discount.
Final Details (VERY IMPORTANT): You must upload your essay, including your table and map in a word document (one file only), to Turnitin.com. You can find the link to Turnitin.com in the Assignment Dropbox. If you experience any difficulties to upload your exercise to Turnitin.com, you must send me your complete work using the course messaging system in a word document before the deadline.
Your answer must be your own, original thoughts. If you plagiarize your thoughts from a website, journal, or any other source, not only you will be sad because you cannot write the small number of words of your own, but you will earn a failing grade in our class. See course syllabus for more details regarding plagiarism issues.
