As we continue to develop the relationship between economics and our natural world, we will focus on one concept that is studied regularly in ecology and has become very important in both economics and the sustainability of our planet: biodiversity.

In order to understand the significance of economic principles in the biodiversity of our world, you must first understand what biodiversity describes.

The following overview of biodiversity was adapted from In World Resources Institute, World Conservation Union, and United Nations Environment Programme, Global Biodiversity Strategy, 1992:

Biodiversity is the totality of genes, species, and ecosystems in a region. Biodiversity can be divided into three hierarchical categoriesgenes, species, and ecosystemsthat describe quite different aspects of living systems that scientists measure in different ways.
Genetic diversity refers to the variation of genes within species. This covers distinct populations of the same species (such as the thousands of traditional rice varieties in India) or genetic variation within a population (high among Indian rhinos, and very low among cheetahs).
Species diversity refers to the variety of species within a region. Such diversity can be measured in many ways, and scientists have not settled on a single best method. The number of species in a regionits species richnessis one often-used measure, but a more precise measurement, taxonomic diversity, also considers the relationship of species to each other. For example, an island with two species of birds and one species of lizard has a greater taxonomic diversity than an island with three species of birds but no lizards.
Ecosystem diversity is harder to measure than species or genetic diversity because the boundaries of communitiesassociations of speciesand ecosystems are elusive. Nevertheless, as long as a consistent set of criteria is used to define communities and ecosystems, their numbers and distribution can be measured.
For additional information on biodiversity read the article Biodiversity from the National Wildlife Federation. For an in-depth review of how biodiversity is measured read the article on Getting the Measure of Biodiversity. These resources will help you address the questions in the following Case Assignment.

Also, see the PowerPoint on Measuring Biodiversity by the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Case Assignment
From the Background readings above, address the following questions for your case assignment in the form of an essay. Complete a 2-3 page paper using complete sentences for each question and APA formatting for citations. Include any citations used to support your research. For additional expectations, including how to organize your assignment, see the Assignment Expectations below.

Define biodiversity.

Why is biodiversity important? What are some of the benefits of biodiversity?

How is biodiversity measured?

What is extinction? What is causing it today?

What is the Endangered Species Act? What is it meant to do? (reflect on the economic consequences of the Act as we will be delving into the topic later on)

What are some of the most and least diverse species in your local area? Try the interactive map called the Map of Life developed by a research team from both Yale University and the University of Colorado Boulder.
The link can be found at https://www.mol.org/location/32.045/-471.489/.

Select Locations from the menu bar at the top right. Once the map pulls up, you can select an area of interest to you. For instance, clicking on the state of Arizona the data should indicate the greatest diversity is found in bird species (394) and the least in palms (1).

Select an area of interest to you to describe in your essay. Copy and paste the chart area showing the most and least diverse species in your area (map of United States does not need to be copied, only the species chart). Were you surprised by the results? Why or why not.
Insects are the largest and most diverse group of organisms on Earth. Select one insect species from your local area (click on the insect species from the Map of Life to learn more) and describe its importance to humans (medicine, research, agriculture, aesthetics, etc). Include an image of your chosen insect within your essay.
What can you do as an individual to help slow the loss of biodiversity?

Assignment Expectations
Organize this essay assignment using subtitles that summarize the topic from each question above. For example, to answer Question 1, use a descriptive subtitle like the following: The Definition of Biodiversity.

Answer each question under the subtitle using complete sentences that relate back to the question. Be sure to use APA formatting throughout your essay with 1-inch margins, 12-point type, and double spacing throughout. Include a title page, introduction, answers to the questions with subtitles, and concluding paragraph. Remember to include in-text citations within the body of the essay referencing your resources (e.g., Murray, 2014). Also, be sure to include a reference section at the end of your assignment listing all required readings and any additional resources you used to complete your essay. A helpful guide to writing a quality essay can be found in Trident’s Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper. This guide also provides links to example essays written in APA format.

Direct quotes should be limited and must be designated by quotation marks. Paraphrased ideas must give credit to the original author, for example: (Murray, 2014). Direct copying from homework help websites will not receive credit. Once you have completed your assignment within a Word document, please upload your final version to the Case 1 Dropbox. Please also note your Turnitin originality score and make revisions as needed. Please contact your instructor with any questions.

geology

Each student will prepare a 750 word research paper describing the geology of a locality with which they are most familiar, (e.g. their home town or region) or about which they have particular interest (e.g. Mt. Vesuvius).  Papers must provide sources (citations) for all facts provided and a bibliography.  The bibliography must include a minimum of one peer-reviewed scientific article.  Papers must include at least one geologic map of the locality or region discussed. The map, any other figures and the bibliography do not count in the 750 words required.  The paper should discuss the following topics: What types of bedrock are in the region?  How old are the rocks?  By what methods were rock ages determined? How were the rocks formed? For each type of rock, what was the tectonic environment during during formation? Is the region tectonically active today? What natural hazards and natural resources are associated with the region? Is the region expected to experience any effects of climate change? A short (250 words) draft of the project, including a partial list of sources, must be presented for feedback by 3/24.””

Active Conservatio

Active Conservation: As technology progresses, we have increased capacity to actively intervene and engineer ecosystems. We have every reason to expect these capacities to continue to expand. For example, we can facilitate animal migration, introduce non-native species, revive long extinct species, genetically engineer extant species, and so on. Which of these interventions are justified and why? How should we decide whether and when to intervene? Is non-intervention even possible? Desirable? (Readings to consider: Emma Marris Rambunctious Garden; Clare Palmer `Saving Species but Losing Wildness’; C. Josh Donlan Restoring America’s Big Wild Animals; Ronald Sandler `The Ethics of Reviving Long Extinct Species’; Lilly-Marlene Russow `Why Do Species Matter?’)

please write a paper not longer than 1500 words addressing the topic. Please do not feel as though every question in your chosen topic needs to be explicitly addressed. Instead, think of the prompts as exactly thatprompts. A successful paper will demonstrate that you are grappling with the issues raised in that topic. That can be done by narrowing the focus to only one aspect of that topic and considering it carefully. The same goes for the readings to consider. I would say papers should explicitly engage with at least two readings, but beyond that only use readings as they are useful to you.

Citations: Students must cite appropriately. This means indicating where quotes and paraphrases come from. I don’t care about format . You may use outside sourcesthough I discourage it. If you use outside sources, you must include a bibliography. If you just use class readings and handouts, you do not need to include a bibliography, but it should be clear from the in-line citations what comes from where.

accidental discoveries

While we have spent the term discussing how science is methodical and follows a set of guidelines, as you learned this week sometimes discoveries are made by accident.  Other times discoveries were made because the person who discovered it simply didn’t know they couldn’t do what they did!

Choose a discovery from this link:

https://www.sciencealert.com/these-eighteen-accidental-scientific-discoveries-changed-the-world

– Did one of these discoveries speak to you?
– What struck you as cool, interesting or just plain amazing about it?
– Do a little research and tell us more about it!

Any topic (writer’s choice)

The report must include:
1.    IUPAC name and few brands names
2.    Circle each functional group in the condensed formula
3.    Major Medical uses of this drug.
4.    How many chiral center “s” in the condensed structural formula?
5.    Condensed chemical formula
6.    Line – dash formula
7.    Common side effects of this drug use.
8.    Patient facts Sheet, and CAS number of this drug
9.    Approval History of this drug
10.    Routes or Form in which this drug administrated.

Public Transportation

I need to create an argumentative essay based on this: The government makes the claim that using public transportation has positive effects on the environment, however, in South Florida, efforts to develop more efficient public transportation has been less than successful.

My thesis is:  Public transportation is a system that greatly benefits the environment which is why Florida should be finding innovative ways to improve its public transportation policies.

Introduction to Astronomy

How do you think astronomy affected the development of civilization and society, of philosophy, theology and religion? How do you think it is affecting it today? How do you think it may affect it in the future? You could give an example of some astronomical discovery that has affected the development of society in a profound way, and explain what the effect has been.

You can use any source for reading textbook, or articles
you wish. However, your paper should not be just a summary of what you have read, it should express instead your own ideas and views, and although you can certainly quote any book/article you have read to support these views.

IT HAS TO BE IN: The font Calibri (Body) 12 NOT DOUBLED SPACED
