3.    Discuss ways these ideas could be applied to questions or dilemmas you are facing at your current employment, at your own business venture, or within your personal life.

Provide an example of the self-fulfilling prophecy that you have seen operating in the real world, perhaps even an example of a self-fulfilling prophecy that you have created yourself. For example, a student in a previous class said that she worked as a server in a restaurant. When she served a middle-aged customer she tended to work harder because she expected a bigger tip than when she served a young adult customer. As a result, she got bigger tips from her middle-aged customers. What are the implications for the self-fulfilling prophecy for the people involved?

We have a good idea of where we are now in regards to community policing. But where do we go in the future to build on our successes and forge stronger ties between the community and government service providers? The Department of Justice and the International Association of Chiefs of Police have recently released a publication called Bridging the Gap Between Law Enforcement and Communities of Color. Navigate to http://www.theiacp.org/CommunitiesOfColor and find the first section of the tool kit, called Policing for Progress. Within the Policing for Progress section are thirteen examples of community policing efforts. Select one of the examples, click on its title and learn more about it. With regard to the community policing effort you have chosen, analyze the role of the Chief Executives office in its operation. In addition, evaluate and interpret the role of the community within the effort.

Using peer reviewed articles and other professional publications including local newspapers, search for information about Kansas City Nova and learn how the community has responded to the program.

One of the most beneficial exercises in a course exploring ethics is to develop a paper that allows you the opportunity to create connections between your professional view of ethics and applied ethical theories. The nature of ethical decision making is recognition, analysis, and resolution.

Your paper must explore a current ethical issue in your workplace. It can be a current or former employer, or someplace where you have volunteered.  Ideally, the issue that you explore is something related to your current or future career.

A few ideas for your consideration:

~ You work in HR, and one of your co-workers is using a social media platform, like Facebook, to spy on potential hires and remove those

~ You are responsible for enforcing a physical fitness/readiness standard for your employer. Due to your work responding to a catastrophe for the past month, many people have neglected their physical fitness.  How do you address the issue of physical fitness when the staff has not had the time to put into it?

~ Your co-worker has been consistently late for the past month unbeknownst to the supervisor. Reporting such behavior could mean that your co-worker is dismissed, or put on a performance improvement plan.  Yet, the co-worker is dealing with a personal tragedy because her 5-year-old son was diagnosed with Leukemia. Do you report?

~ You take a new hire on a sales call and meet with an executive at company X, your most important client. While your back is turned to grab something out of your briefcase, the executive fondles the backside of your new employee. What do you do to protect the employee yet preserve the relationship with the client?

This final paper is your opportunity to delve into a topic within the framework of ethics that you find interesting based on your approved topic and thesis statement.
