Current Event

In this assignment, you will compare news accounts of a current event of your choice using summary and analysis skills. Your assignment should be two to three pages in length and formatted according to APA guidelines.

STEP 1: SELECT A CURRENT EVENT TOPIC.
Consider contemporary debatable news topics. Some ideas for exploration include tariffs, border politics, Brexit, role of the UN, digital hacking, populist politics, emergent technologies, and labor practices.

STEP 2: RESEARCH AND SELECT TWO REPRESENTATIONS OF THE CURRENT EVENT IN THE NEWS MEDIA.
One representation should be from a credible source. The second should be from a source that may include potential biases (think of opinion pieces).

STEP 3: SUMMARIZE YOUR SELECTED ARTICLES.
For each article, provide a three-paragraph MAXIMUM summary of the key points, main examples, and reasoning. The goal is to provide objective summaries that relay the information of the articles. Resist the urge to give into your own biases! Remember to clearly label each summary and remember to include an APA citation for each reference on the reference page at the end of your assignment document.

STEP 4: WRITE A COMPARE AND CONTRAST ANALYSIS.
Provide a two- to three- page compare and contrast analysis that evaluates the credibility, validity, timeliness, and biases of the articles. Remember to consider the tools in information literacy that you read about in the Week 2 Lesson to help shape your response. Be sure to incorporate properly formatted and cited textual evidence from the articles to demonstrate your points. Also remember to include a properly formatted APA reference page at the end of the document.

Art appreciation

As a final project, students will be required to produce a 5-image with labels (minimum), 2000-words of text (minimum)/2500-words of text (maximum) research project highlighting diversity in the students art ‘community’ (UF community)–specifically, a collection or exhibition of non-Western art in the Harn Museum UF. These can include works from one collection (Asia, Africa, etc.) or works from multiple non-Western collections or exhibitions (current, future or past) in the Harn. If you chose works from multiple collections, be sure to tie them together thematically in relation to diversity in Gainesville. In keeping with our diversity theme, you are also welcome to choose American women and US artists of color. The Harn has had, and also currently has, many exhibitions devoted to US people of color and women, including:

Global Perspectives: Highlights from the Contemporary Collection, 10/8/19-5/30/21
Accumulate, Classify, Preserve, Display: Works by Roberto Obregn from the Carolina and Fernando Eseverri Collection 11/5/19-2/16/20
ClayCurvyCool (ongoing) http://www.harn.ufl.edu/claycurvycool (Links to an external site.) includes work by multi-gender Japanese ceramicists
The Modern collection (ongoing) http://www.harn.ufl.edu/exhibitions/modernhighlights (Links to an external site.) features works by diverse artists from the US and abroad
Your 5 principle images must come from Harn collections. Your art objects may be selected from =past= or current Harn exhibitions, or from their permanent collections on or off view. You may include additional images (beyond your main 5) outside Harn collections for comparison and contrast. Please note that some exhibits have more published information at the Harn website than others. This is a research project, so you’re expected, as necessary, to research your chosen works by accessing other sources other than the Harn website. For those students on campus, you are strongly encourage to visit the Harn and take full advantage of the resources available at the Harn’s Bishop Study Center.

To summarize:
Make a connection between the Harn’s global collections and diversity in the Gainesville community.
Use the art object information to support your view that the Harn Museum does =or= does not reflect and/or serve as an effective ambassador for cultural diversity in Gainesville.
In other words, learning about global cultural (via global art collections) =should= assist the Gainesville community, students and others (this museum is open to the public), in having greater awareness of diversity/cultural issues concerning =living= groups other than the individual’s own.
Another question to consider: Do the Harn collections/exhibitions reflect Gainesville’s (UF campus and greater Gainesville) cultural demographics, its cultural diversity?
*Important:  Your paper should include footnotes, endnotes or in-text (parenthetical) citations + a bibliography.

To clarify: Notes (one type of the three choices just mentioned) =AND= a separate bibliography–these are two separate items. Any information/ideas/concepts borrowed from or inspired by any source (website, article, book) must be cited with a footnote, endnote or in-text citation. This information, as always, will be also be included in your bibliography, along with all sources you consulted for your paper, whether or not your cited them in your notes. Any major style guide is accepted: Chicago, MLA, APA, etc. It is imperative that, however, that you follow an approved major style, such as the three just listed.

*Please note that this project was designed with remote, off-campus students in mind. As a Gainesville student, you are a member of the Gainesville community–even if digitally. You commune weekly with fellow Gainesville students in the discussion boards for this class. All Harn collections are available at their website. Gainesville/UF demographics can be easily researched on the web. Librarians at the Harn Bishop Study Center are available to assist students with research in their collections. Remote students can reach the Bishop via email and phone. See ‘Research Help’ link below or go to harn.ufl.edu

Art has the power to influence. Art reflects the cultural concerns of the community that sponsors it. With this in mind, investigate how the Harn’s non-Western art collection(s) impact/influence/reflect (or doesn’t impact/influence/reflect) diversity in Gainesville. This is a research paper and your information should be properly researched and documented. Consult Harn resources provided below for information about its collections.
You may use your own photographs or photos provided at the Harn website or online. All images should be properly labelled. Your paper should be uploaded as a single Word doc with properly labelled, embedded images. You should include a bibliography or reference page at the end of your paper that includes all your sources. You may research works from different collections, or the works from one collection.
This is a coherent research paper, NOT an exhibition catalogue. I DO NOT WANT IMAGES WITH INDIVIDUAL DESCRIPTIONS, LIKE A CATALOGUE. Instead, construct a research paper, with an introduction, body and conclusion. Your paper should include a bibliography or references page. Your paper should include a thesis statement or key theme/argument. Your images should support your argument and serve as the focus of your narrative.
See sample papers, below. These serve merely as sample guidelines per my *minimum* expectations for an ‘A’ grade for this project. These papers were kindly provided with the author’s permission. The formats shown in either sample paper is preferred, but not required. You may use whatever format or style guide you prefer, so long as your paper is consistent in its format. You are *not* obligated to include section titles, as shown in the sample papers. You should, however, include some form of introduction, body and conclusion.
For this project, students will be expected to identify a culturally diverse art collection in the Harn, and analyze ways in which this art reflects the artist’s or group’s cultural heritage. Students should contrast this heritage with their own experience. Students should discuss the ways in which the art collection contributes to/engages diversity and cultural awareness of groups in their own community/digital community of UF Gainesville.
Papers should reflect material discussed and learned in class, especially topics covered in the diversity discussion boards.
When discussing diversity in Gainesville, do not generalize. Research actual relevant ethnic/racial/gender statistics and demographics, readily available online.
The collection you write about should be properly researched. Resources for research of museum collections are available to students at the Harn. Researched or quoted material should be properly cited. Any citation style is acceptable, such as MLA or Chicago. See citation guide, below, for Chicago.
Yes, you may use ‘I’ pronouns/first person point of view.

Images should be properly labelled with artist, title and date. Photo source or credits not required.

Interview Paragraph about Arts

I have a simple draft for my personal interview for a magazine about arts. I wrote most of what I want to say in my draft already. I need some editing and adjustment to make this draft sounds professional, sincere and nice.

PS: I would like to have first 1 and 2 paragraphs simplified a little bit.
for the 3 and 4 paragraphs, could add maybe one or two more sentences.

Communication Plan

The Closing and Relocation of a Call Center

In this case study, you are the regional human resource director for a Fortune 500 company. You receive an unexpected visit from your vice president of human resources (VP of HR), who informs you that there is a reorganization taking place within your company. He starts by explaining that the president of the company has decided to retire after 28 years, and the new president has decided to move the current headquarters from the Northeast to Texas. No business reason was provided. There will be almost 1,000 employees redeployed since the company has existed in the Northeast for more than 75 years. This information will be released to employees within the next week. The call centerwith more than 500 employees, including your office that is located within itwill also be relocated to another southern state. All employees will be offered their current positions and a relocation package if they wish to move. Those who do not want to relocate will be given a severance package with outplacement services provided.

Mr. Davis, your VP of HR, is aware that you hired most of the individuals working in the call center and that you are very familiar with the culture and employee status. This news will be devastating to the employees because they have made this the most productive and efficient call center within this global corporation. Mr. Davis came to get your advice on how to best handle the communications plan for announcing this news in your region.

Mr. Davis has taken care of notifications to the state and federal government (i.e., the 60-day notice required according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification [WARN] Act, which announces that the business is relocating and that employees will be redeployed). From previous experience, Mr. Davis shares with you that you will be contacted by the state to set up meetings so that the state may address all of the employees concerning the state benefits and services available to the employees.

Mr. Davis shares two important messages from the new president: (1) Although this news may be unsettling to many employees, business must be conducted in the same professional manner as always, with the least amount of disruption; and (2) whether the employees decide to relocate or not, while they are employed, they must maintain productivity levels, and their metrics will be monitored as usual.

Mr. Davis informs you that Mr. Woods, senior vice president (SVP) of the region, who is responsible for the call center, is being told of this reorganization via a conference call with his boss on the West Coast and the president of the company. Mr. Woods will be joining you and Mr. Davis to plan the communications shortly. Mr. Davis wants to get a head start on planning with you because he has a flight scheduled back to headquarters that afternoon.

You begin to outline a plan for the communications strategy; for example, you include information that will assist Mr. Woods in preparation for his meeting with his direct reports where he will deliver the news. Other questions you think about during the development of the outline are as follows: What information will Mr. Woods give to his direct reports this afternoon, and what will he give them to share with their managers and employees? Mr. Davis sees your outline, and he encourages you to develop your outline into a communication plan/plan of action and to continue to share it with Mr. Woods.

Before Mr. Davis leaves for the airport, he asks you to report back to him with any issues or difficulties you are experiencing with employees. Mr. Davis also asks that you report the following information to him: How many employees do you think will want to relocate? What do they want to know about the new location? What can he do to help answer these questions for the employees? What can he do to assist you with the communication plan or any activities you plan within the next 60-day period? Mr. Davis gives you all of his contact numbers and reminds you that he is available to you for questions and concerns at any time.

Analyze the information presented in this case study, present your communication plan, and answer the questions below. Your case study paper should be at least three pages in length and should follow APA guidelines.

Your communication plan should address the following questions:

What are your concerns? For example, how will you motivate the employees to stay throughout the 60 days if they have other job offers? How will you motivate all employees to maintain their productivity levels?
In the article Semper Fidelis! A Recipe for Leading Others, which is part of your Required Reading for this unit, Aubrey Daniels describes how a person earns leadership status and explains the importance of positive reinforcement. How will your plan help you to establish yourself as a positive reinforcer?
What leadership style does Mr. Davis exhibit?
Propose at least three leadership theories that could be applied to this situation. How will these theories advance or affect employee motivation?
You are required to incorporate information from at least three sources in the required reading for the unit as well as two additional sources in your response. All sources used must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations and references. Your paper should be formatted in APA style to include a title page and reference page.

Ecology and the Environment

Instructions
Human Impact on Climate Change PowerPoint
After learning about several ways in which our everyday actions impact climate change, choose one action to conduct more research on and create a PowerPoint presentation to tell us more! Use the unit material and reliable online resources to gather more information.
There are several ideas with information throughout the unit but there is even more information out in the world! Think about what you do every day, and how the activity uses energy or natural resources. Think about a product you buyhow it was made, what natural resources were used to make it? You can also do a quick google search of everyday activities that effect the environment and start reading some articles for more ideas.
Remember to use reliable sources from the Internet. There is a lot of misinformation out there and finding reliable information can be difficult. The best sources of reference material for your presentation are scientific journals found in the CSU Online Library databases. Click here for a biology research tutorial that demonstrates how to locate library resources relating to biology You can also find reliable statistics at organization websites listed in the Unit under Combat Climate Change.
Your presentation must include:
What everyday activity or product have you chosen to present? Why did you choose this activity or product? Why is it important?
Connect the activity/product to its impact on the environment and climate change. How does doing the activity or making the product use natural resources, disrupt habitat, impact wildlife or other effects on the environment?
Report data and statistics, with references, on how this activity/product effects the environment.
What can people do to decrease the activity/products impact on the environment?
Be sure to follow the formatting and guidelines provided below:
Include at least three visual aids.
Include three reliable references, and at least one source must come from the CSU Online Library.
Use bulleted information on slides (five lines or fewer).
Include substantial and detailed speaker’s notes that include what you would say in an actual presentation. The speaker’s notes should also reflect the depth of your research.
Include a separate title slide and separate reference slide.
Use an appropriate font and background.
Include at least 11 slides, but not more than 15 slides (not counting your title slide and reference slide).
Use correct APA format for references and citations, and use correct grammar and spelling.
Upload the presentation as a .ppt or .pptx file.

The Basics Behind Effective Police Operations

Select at least two (2) types of changes (e.g., public and society, law enforcement officers, police bureaucracy, standards community involvement, technology, etc.), and examine how the selected changes have affected police operations, mission and values, or goals and objectives in the 21st century in the United States. Support your response.
Explain the various lines of communications present within any given local law enforcement agency. Next, determine at least two (2) challenges and concerns that law enforcement might encounter with communication and suggest your strategy to mitigate the challenges. Support your response.
Examine the importance of police patrol in modern policing.
Identify at least two (2) quality of life issues (e.g., panhandlers, prostitution, problems associated with bars and clubs, police interaction with individuals who are mentally ill, homeless people and civil disobedience) that permeate modern law enforcement practices. Propose a response to these issues, based on common practices as outlined in the text, and provide your rationale.
Compare and contrast police reactions as they relate to violence in schools, homes, and workplaces. Provide one (1) example of each to support your response.

Impact of Grief on Different Cultures

The topic of the paper should be chosen from content that is discussed in the book or course material. Frequently chosen topics include comparisons of various cultural rituals around the dying process; the impact of grief; current issues surrounding death and technology; organ donation, coping with death from different development perspectives, palliative care and hospice, etc. Topics such as burial practices, forensics, or historical practices are also interesting. Just remember that you will use these resources to create an informational brochure, so consider your intended audience.
Length. 5 pages that includes a title page (include your topic and intended audience for the
teaching project), one page per source, and a reference page for your additional teaching project
resources and photo credits.
2. Format. Use APA formatting. You no longer need a running head for student papers. You are
expected to thoroughly proofread for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. I
suggest that you submit your paper to a plagiarism checker prior to submission.
Content. For each source of the bibliography, you will include the reference in APA format at the top of the page (single space). Summarize the article: Describe the main points, for example,
purpose/audience/summary/results/possible biases, etc. Write in narrative form. You should keep additional notes from the articles to use in the teaching project, but only summarize the most pertinent information here in one page per article. Do not write in the third person (sometimes the suggested style for an annotated bibliography, but not necessary here)
