KNOWING THE LEARNER

The articles presented in this module provide an opportunity for you to describe, distinguish, and recognize different learning styles as they relate to technology-based learning activities. You should also gain knowledge about learner readiness for technology-based learning activities. Being able to comprehend the various learning styles will enable you to more effectively engage learners (as a teacher or instructor) during technology-supported educational exchanges.

ASSIGNMENT

Remember, you must be able to apply the authors key concepts to technology-based learning activities.

Read all three articles (ATTACHED). As you read the articles, take notes on the characteristics of different learners. Also, take notes on how the authors recommend effectively engaging those learners.
Drawing from the3 ARTICLE readings provided and OTHER research literature as desired, prepare a 3- page essay ADDRESSING EACH OF THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:

– Identify the impact of technology-based activities on self-directed learners.
– Discuss the implications of technology-based activities on learner preferences and
  learner readiness.
– Provide an example of two appropriate instructional strategies which may effectively
engage students with technology-based learning activities, and identify the type of
learning style of each of these two students.

Discussion: ERP Implementation

Many companies implement enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems but are disappointed by the results when they do not realize the return on investment (ROI) that was projected for the system.

Do some research and post an example of either a successful or failed ERP implementation at a major company. How did it (or did it not) standardize processes across the firm? Explain what the major causes were for the success or failure of the system.

If you have worked for a company that has an ERP system, you may choose to post about the effectiveness of that particular ERP system.

POST 1
Institutional Theory
Intuitional theory suggests organizations over time adopt similar if not the same organizational strategies, becoming isomorphic.  Organizational isomorphism according to Deephouse (1996) is the resemblance of an organization to other organizations.  More succinctly, organizational isomorphism involves strategies that are mimicked such as acquisitions, diversification, and other financial strategies or organizational strategies (Deephouse, 1996).  In appearance, it seems as though organizations position themselves so that they are not far behind the leader in terms of innovation and market shares.  McDonalds and Burger King are a prime example of isomorphism that explains the general idea of institutional theory.  Burger King replicates McDonald’s geographical strategy and operational strategies.  After McDonald’s do market research, Burger King simply follows the current. These are the benefits of imitating other firms. Which is to say being number two is not necessarily a bad strategic position.  DiMaggio (1983) informs organizations compete for customers and resources.  The forerunner often works out the kinks and identifies issues that the runner up can avoid.  The ultimate strategy of the come from behind leader for some organizations is to discover what the competition does well and do it better.
This notion is not to suggest that organizations are slaves to each other; that what one company does the other is forced to mimic.  Suddaby (2010) recognizes some of the research state contingency theory is represented in institutional theory, pointing to the opinion institutions are subject to their environment and adjust accordingly.  Suddaby (2010) also recognizes DiMaggio (1998) who argues emphatically against the idea that organizations are prisoners to their institutional environment, and simply adjust on a whim, on the contrary, organizations reflect their institutional environment and are institutional entrepreneurs.  What is inferred is that organizations are constantly reinventing processes to improve themselves, which ultimately helps the competition improve.  As such, institutions are improving industries and driving instead of following.  This interesting dichotomy is what makes explaining institutional theory difficult as pinpointing what institutionalism is can be approached by interpreting what institutionalization is not.  Intuitional theory embodies the idea that institutionalism is a specific organizational practice while it also represents the organization as a whole.

Post 2
Institutional Theory is a continuation and extension of the intellectual revolution that began in the 1960s, which introduced the concept of open systems in the study of organizations.Institutional theories of organizations provide a complex view of orga-nizations. In these theories, organizations are influenced by normative pressures, sometimes arising from external sources such as the state, other times arising from within the organization itself. Under some conditions, these pressures lead the organization to be guided by legitimated elements, from standard operating procedures to professional certification and state requirement, which often have the effect of directing attention away from task performance (Dacin, Goodstein, & Scott, 2002). In time, institutional theory came to recognize the significant organizational effects that are associated with the increase of cultural and social forces: the institutional environment (Dacin, et al., 2002). In fact, as institutional theory has grown, some branches have moved closer to behavioral theory. Organizations came to be seen as being more than productive systems; they were now seen as cultural and social systems (De Pra, da Cunha, Lima, Carstens, 2017). Institutional theorists assert that the institutional environment can strongly influence the development of formal structures in an organization, often more so than market pressures. Dimaggio and Powell (1983) were key to the growth of Institutional Theory, which has come to encompass a large variety of phenomena within the field of organizational studies. Institutional theory is a theoretical framework for analyzing social and in particular, particularly organizational phenomena (Dacin, et al., 2002).  In sum, Institutional theory seeks to explain organizational communication in terms of shared pre-existing rules, beliefs, and norms in the external environment of organizations. Complying with institutionalized prescriptions has benefits such as a means for gaining legitimacy, a decrease in uncertainty, and an increase in intelligibility of organizations actions and activities (Dacin, et al., 2002).

Scholarly Paper
Final Project: Updated

The final project allows students to develop a case conceptualization of a client and its application in the area of helping relationships and counseling skills. The aim of this project is to learn about the helping professions in greater depth by applying it to a client of your choosing.  Topics will revolve around areas noted in our text such as essential counseling skills that will enhance the helping relationship (i.e. empathy and empathic responses; probing and summarizing; challenging self and client; helping clients tell their stories; helping clients establish and reach their goals).

You can use a TV, movie, celebrity or book character for this project.  Please find at least three scholarly journals to supplement the textbook in your rationale of working with the individual. Be sure to cite correctly with APA when using scholarly resources as plagiarism is a serious offense and will result in a zero for the assignment. Proper spelling, grammar are expected as well. The case conceptualization should be 6 pages double spaced minimum in length. You may write the project up in narrative form, following the headers below.

Background information (5 points) In your paper identify the TV/book/movie setting, individuals, family members and any other important relationships of your identified client. Include demographic information, such as age, grade in school, employment status, and other history (e.g., military history, current or past legal problems) that seems relevant to the presenting problem and strengths of the client.

Multicultural considerations: (5 points) CACREP 2.F.2.c, CMH 5.C.2.j;Describe the cultural background (using every letter) of your client using either the RESPECTFUL or ADDRESSING model. Describe at least one multicultural counseling skill you will use to address this consideration.

Presenting Problem: (5 points) Describe the reason the individual is seeking counseling at this particular time (i.e., the presenting problem). Why did the client come to you (from the clients perspective or other referring stakeholder)? How long has the problem(s) persisted? Note the intensity, frequency and duration of symptoms.

Resources and Strengths (5 points): Describe the resources that are already available to the client (individual, family, friends, spiritual, community supports). Describe additional resources that would benefit and support fostering wellness in the client.

Role as a counselor (10 points): CACREP 2.F.5.f; 2.F..5.n; Identify two ways you will build rapport to enhance a strong working alliance. Describe your role as a counselor with this particular individual. (If this is a group project, this part must be done individually for each group member and copy and pasted in the final project.)  Identify specific counselor characteristics and cultural factors that may influence the process. Analyze areas for growth for you to consult about and competently best treat this client. What is involved with your current self-care plan? How do you plan to manage your ongoing self-care?

Therapeutic Dialogue (10 points):  CACREP 2.F.5.g Share pieces of an actual dialogue from the movie, tv, book with the character and then create a mock response from you (or your team) as a counselor as it relates to each of these:

Identify how and when you would use one nonverbal prompt in session

Create one empathic response to the client

Create one probing prompt to the client

Create an open ended question to ask the client

Provide a summary to something the client has said in the dialogue

Treatment planning (20 points) CACREP 2.F.5.d , 2.F.5.g; Formulate a tentative treatment plan for the individual based upon your book and at least one evidenced based journal article:

How will you help the client tell their story? What is the clients story, real story, and right story? (5 points)

Where in the stages of change is the client? You are also to identify trouble spots you might encounter while working with this particular individual, including reluctant and resistant behaviors to self defeating thoughts & behaviors. Students will identify how they would address any issues presented. (5 points)

Discussion 1: Financial Effects of Globalization

In recent decades, the emergence of global economic, political, environmental, and cultural interconnections has greatly impacted people, companies, and nations  regionally and in different parts of the world. Consider, for instance, the following mission statement: “Partnerships International, Inc. periodically brings together industry and government in a collegial and informative setting in order to enhance the U.S.’s abilities and presence throughout the global marketplace, and to promote our continuous growth and development in that competitive, demanding and dynamic environment” (Partnerships International, Inc., 2014). There are financial implications associated with the emergence of global partnerships and globalization in general. In this Discussion, you consider some of these.
With these thoughts in mind:
By Day 3
Post an explanation of the financial benefits and limitations of global partnerships. Provide specific evidence of one positive or one negative impact of globalization on a government organization.
