Assessing a Healthcare Program/Policy Evaluation

Program/policy evaluation is a valuable tool that can help strengthen the quality of programs/policies and improve outcomes for the populations they serve. Program/policy evaluation answers basic questions about program/policy effectiveness. It involves collecting and analyzing information about program/policy activities, characteristics, and outcomes. This information can be used to ultimately improve program services or policy initiatives.

Nurses can play a very important role assessing program/policy evaluation for the same reasons that they can be so important to program/policy design. Nurses bring expertise and patient advocacy that can add significant insight and impact. In this Assignment, you will practice applying this expertise and insight by selecting an existing healthcare program or policy evaluation and reflecting on the criteria used to measure the effectiveness of the program/policy.

To Prepare:

Review the Healthcare Program/Policy Evaluation Analysis Template provided in the Resources.
Select an existing healthcare program or policy evaluation or choose one of interest to you.
Review community, state, or federal policy evaluation and reflect on the criteria used to measure the effectiveness of the program or policy described.
The Assignment: (23 pages)

Based on the program or policy evaluation you selected, complete the Healthcare Program/Policy Evaluation Analysis Template. Be sure to address the following:

Describe the healthcare program or policy outcomes.
How was the success of the program or policy measured?
How many people were reached by the program or policy selected?
How much of an impact was realized with the program or policy selected?
At what point in program implementation was the program or policy evaluation conducted?
What data was used to conduct the program or policy evaluation?
What specific information on unintended consequences was identified?
What stakeholders were identified in the evaluation of the program or policy? Who would benefit most from the results and reporting of the program or policy evaluation? Be specific and provide examples.
Did the program or policy meet the original intent and objectives? Why or why not?
Would you recommend implementing this program or policy in your place of work? Why or why not?
Identify at least two ways that you, as a nurse advocate, could become involved in evaluating a program or policy after 1 year of implementation.

Any topic (writer’s choice)

For your major project in this course, you will be writing a 20 page paper on one of the following categorie of psychological testing: Forensic Assessment

In your major paper, you will complete a literature review that includes at least ten peer-reviewed articles related to the following issues.  At least eight of the sources must be empirical research articles.

Address the following issues for each category of psychological testing:
History of assessment related to your topic
Reliability and validity of the most frequently used assessment instruments
Validation of assessment instruments in multicultural settings and special populations
Typical settings in which assessment instruments are used
Typical purposes for which assessment instruments are used

Portfolio Assignment: The Role of the Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development and Implementation

Assume you are a nurse manager on a unit where a new nursing documentation system is to be implemented. You want to ensure that the system will be usable and acceptable for the nurses impacted. You realize a nurse leader must be on the implementation team.

To Prepare:

Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and reflect on the scenario presented.
Consider the benefits and challenges associated with involving a nurse leader on an implementation team for health information technology.
The Assignment: (2-3 pages)

In preparation of filling this role, develop a 2- to 3-page role description for a graduate-level nurse to guide his/her participation on the implementation team. The role description should be based on the SDLC stages and tasks and should clearly define how this individual will participate in and impact each of the following steps:

Planning and requirements definition
Analysis
Design of the new system
Implementation
Post-implementation support

Any topic (writer’s choice)

:  For this project, you will be critiquing the following original empirical research article that reports the results of testing validity and reliability of a research instrument in a special population.
Iacono, T., West, D., Bloomberg, K., & Johnson, H. (2009).
Reliability and validity of the revised Triple C: Checklist of Communicative Competencies
for adults with severe and multiple disabilities.  Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 53(1), 44-53.

In addition to explaining the study design and results, use the information from the textbook as well as the article to explain each type of validity and reliability that was evaluated in the study.  Be sure to answer the following questions in your critique:
a.    Do you have confidence in the research design (e.g., the number of participants, the inclusion criteria, the methods)?  Why or why not?
b.    Do you have confidence in the researchers analyses of the validity and reliability of the instrument?  Why or why not?
c.    Would you have confidence in the instrument based on the validity and reliability of the instrument as demonstrated in the study?  Why or why not?
d.    Would you have any reservations using the instrument in future research?  Why or why not?
e.    What additional types of validity and reliability, if any, would you want to determine in future research that were not tested in this study?
f.    Discuss the purpose of demonstrating validity and reliability in the population sampled in the study.  Can these results generalize to other populations (ages, gender, abilities) or cultures?
