Lab Assignment: Differential Diagnosis for Skin Conditions

Properly identifying the cause and type of a patients skin condition involves a process of elimination known as differential diagnosis. Using this process, a health professional can take a given set of physical abnormalities, vital signs, health assessment findings, and patient descriptions of symptoms, and incrementally narrow them down until one diagnosis is determined as the most likely cause.

In this Lab Assignment, you will examine several visual representations of various skin conditions, describe your observations, and use the techniques of differential diagnosis to determine the most likely condition.

To Prepare
Review the Skin Conditions document provided in this weeks Learning Resources, and select one condition to closely examine for this Lab Assignment.
Consider the abnormal physical characteristics you observe in the graphic you selected. How would you describe the characteristics using clinical terminologies?
Explore different conditions that could be the cause of the skin abnormalities in the graphics you selected.
Consider which of the conditions is most likely to be the correct diagnosis, and why.
Search the Walden library for one evidence-based practice, peer-reviewed article based on the skin condition you chose for this Lab Assignment.

The Lab Assignment
Choose one skin condition graphic (identify by number in your Chief Complaint) to document your assignment in the SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan) note format rather than the traditional narrative style. Refer to Chapter 2 of the Sullivan text and the Comprehensive SOAP Template in this week’s Learning Resources for guidance. Remember that not all comprehensive SOAP data are included in every patient case.
Use clinical terminologies to explain the physical characteristics featured in the graphic. Formulate a differential diagnosis of three to five possible conditions for the skin graphic that you chose. Determine which is most likely to be the correct diagnosis and explain your reasoning using at least three different references, one reference from current evidence-based literature from your search and two different references from this weeks Learning Resources.

RUBRIC:
Using the SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan) note format:
  Create documentation, following SOAP format, of your assignment to choose one skin condition graphic (identify by number in your Chief Complaint).   Use clinical terminologies to explain the physical characteristics featured in the graphic.

Formulate a different diagnosis of three to five possible considerations for the skin graphic.      Determine which is most likely to be the correct diagnosis, and explain your reasoning using at least three different references from current evidence-based literature.
Written Expression and Formatting – Paragraph Development and Organization:
Paragraphs make clear points that support well-developed ideas, flow logically, and demonstrate continuity of ideas. Sentences are carefully focused–neither long and rambling nor short and lacking substance. A clear and comprehensive purpose statement and introduction are provided that delineate all required criteria.
Written Expression and Formatting – The paper follows correct APA format for title page, headings, font, spacing, margins, indentations, page numbers, running heads, parenthetical/in-text citations, and reference list.

Interpersonal Interactions in Film
Films can hold up a mirror to us about ourselves and our relationships, but they can also demonstrate an exaggerated, stereotypical, simplistic, or dysfunctional view of our interactions. This Assignment provides you with an opportunity to apply what you are learning about interpersonal relationships as portrayed in a movie of your choosing. You will evaluate communication skills as you analyze the movie. Choose a movie that allows you to analyze significant interpersonal relationships.
Consider what the movie is about, who the characters are, and who holds the significant relationships. Analyze the verbal and nonverbal communication present in the major relationships of the movie. Choose a scene in which two characters from different cultural backgrounds (race, age group, nationality, etc.) interact with each other, and analyze the communication that takes place in that scene. Perhaps the two characters are having a deeply emotional conversation (anger, sadness, fear, etc.) that warrants your consideration. Apply lessons learned in this course, and from your own experience, to your analysis of the scene and interactions.
This week, you will start the analysis portion of your film of choice, focusing on the interpersonal interactions it portrays. You will also apply the knowledge you have gained on interpersonal communication to a relationship in the movie you chose.

    Choose a film that contains a significant interpersonal relationship and watch it, looking for a scene that has an extensive conversation between two people. This should be one scene, not multiple ones throughout the movie.

Write a 2- to 3-page paper that includes the following:
    A brief paragraph that describes the scene that you have chosen, and the characters involved. This should give an overview of what took place in the scene.
    An analysis of the verbal and nonverbal communication that took place between the characters in that scene. You should be looking at the different verbal communication concepts and nonverbal communication types you see taking place in the scene. You will want to write about these, pointing to the specific cues from the scene that are showing the concept or type of communication that you identified.
    What was the outcome of the conversation? Was it positive or negative? Could anything have been done to make it better?

Jennifer Veitch, PhD, a senior research officer at the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa, investigates how indoor lighting affects employee well-being and productivity and how employee behaviors affect the use of resources and energy. Dr. Veitch recently completed a study on the impact of control over workspace lighting on workers. Findings of her research revealed that when people have control over the lighting in their work spaces, their moods are more upbeat, they are more committed to their employers, and they have overall improved well-being. Individually controlled lighting also reduced lighting energy use by 10 percent.

For this unit’s reflection, please share your thoughts on the pros and cons of implementing individually controlled lighting in an office environment. How receptive do you feel your company would be to exploring the concept of individually controlled lighting?
