Term Paper Assignment – Geography 330 (F19)

Assignment
You are to write a 5-7 page (typed, double-spaced) research-based paper about any topic of relevance to the course.  Maps, diagrams, etc. are welcome in addition to the five pages of text.

Approximate point weighting for final draft:
Your final draft grade will be determined by how well you do the following:
a. Present a well-structured argument with an introduction, thesis statement, logically-organized body and conclusion;
b. Write objective prose (avoid speaking as yourself, asserting personal opinions, drawing from your background personal experiences and observations, etc. (Direct observations are only valid if they are made specifically for this assignment.)
c. Submit a paper that is grammatically correct and free of punctuation and spelling errors;
d. Draw meaningfully from scholarly geographic sources as well as other sources.  You dont get points for doing this, but you will lose them for not doing so.  The bibliography must list the three scholarly sources separately from all other sources.
e. Properly cite all sources.  (You must use the Chicago Manual of Style author-date system for the in-text citations and bibliography.  Consult the citation style guide on the Oviatt Library web page to learn this system.  Or simply copy the style of the Yearbook of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers.  (Sample on Canvas)

What was the impact of the system of slavery in the Americas and in what ways did it shape the lives of enslaved peoples?

Contact between Europeans and Americans had a profound impact on the peoples of the African
Continent as they became targets of a system of slavery that deprived them of personal liberty and
dignity. What was the impact of the system of slavery in the Americas and in what ways did it
shape the lives of enslaved peoples? Make sure you make an argument and support that argument
with evidence (concrete examples that will strengthen your argument).

Format:
As you think about your argument make sure you consider the sources available that will be the
most effective/convincing in helping you support your argument, therefore use concrete examples
and the strongest sources available to strengthen your paper. You may use materials dating from
beginning of class to November 6 (with an emphasis on the 9/28-11/6 materials), to help you
develop and support your argument. Be careful of trying to do too much. This is a short paper and
ideally 2-3 examples should be analyzed and tied to your overall argument. Make sure to develop
your ideas and write clearly, be explicit about what you are trying to say. GUIDE THE READER!
Read Instructions carefully and follow them! Paper must be 3-5 FULL pages in length (not 2 or
2 or 5 ), typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, 1 margins all-around. You
may not use any more than 3 quotes in your essay; quotes cannot be longer than 3 lines. Late
papers/exams will be penalized 3 points for each day it is late. Remember to show where your
information is coming from, not just cite the direct quotes.

Marks of A Disciple Paper Assignment

PAPER INSTRUCTIONS AND GUIDE

1. TEXTBOOKS TO BE READ AND CITED AMONG THE 9 SOURCES TO BE CITED

1.  Gorman, Michael J. Cruciformity: Pauls Narrative Spirituality of the Cross. Eerdmans, 2001. ISBN: 978-0802847959. (Read Chapters  5 AND 6 )

2. Whitney, Donald S. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. NavPress, 2014. ISBN: 978-1615216178. ( READ CHAPTERS 1, READ CHAPTERS 2 AND 3 )

3. McClendon and Lockhart, Timeless Church, scan the book. Look through it as an example. This book was designed to identify the overarching characteristics of the early church and argue that these are prescriptive and should be evident in churches today. In a similar way, you are going to be creating a list of the overarching characteristics of a biblical disciple.

OVERVIEW

The church is called to make disciples (Matt 28:19-20). If making disciples is the goal, it is important we are able to articulate what a disciple is, particularly, what characteristics a disciple should exhibit. To develop accurate ministry plans, we must know what the target is. That is at the heart of this assignment. Please take your time. Be specific and clear in the development of this document.

INSTRUCTIONS

For the sake of these instructions, I will use Marks and Characteristics as synonyms. Keeping that in mind, here are the steps you need to take to complete this assignment.

First, study the Scriptures. Conduct a personal study of the Scripture regarding what a disciple looks like. Examine the commands of Scripture regarding the call the follow Jesus. Look at disciples that follow Jesus well. What characteristics seem fundamentally essential? In other words, what are the characteristics that should be evident in someones life who claims to be a disciple of Jesus? Take significant time here, and spend time in the Scriptures studying.

Second, study others. Look up other writers. See what Bible commentaries say on some of the critical verses you examined in the previous step. Look in the textbooks for this course. Read journal articles. Look up sources in the online Liberty Library. See where other scholars agree and disagree with your list. See what characteristics they use and how they describe disciples.

Third, narrow and refine your list. Narrow your list now to the big, essential characteristics. Try to remove overlap between the characteristics. Create a specific, final list. (I recommend having 4 7 characteristics in your final list. If you have too many, youre not getting to the big, essential, umbrella characteristics.)

Fourth, present your list.
A template for this paper is provided in the course for you to use. This assignment must meet Turabian formatting standards.
    Provide a cover page.
    Provide a contents page.
    Provide an introduction.
Provide an argument for the essentiality of each biblical mark (i.e., characteristics). Each mark should have its own first-level heading in bold.
o    Present the mark in a clear, concise word or phrase as the heading.
o    Provide a detailed description of the mark you are discussing. Then, present an argument for the essentiality of this particular mark (i.e., characteristic) from Scripture. In other words, demonstrate that this mark is essential and biblically derived. Do not just quote Scripture, but present a conclusion based on your study of Scripture.
o    Each section for each mark must be a minimum of 200 words.
o    A minimum of 8 unique scholarly sources should be cited in this paper. Each mark should have a minimum of two scholarly citations. These sources do not have to be quoted. Sometimes a source is simply cited to show where another scholar has arrived at your same conclusion. Do not cite a website or blog.
    Provide a conclusion.
Provide a bibliography. Bibliography must include at least 8 unique scholarly sources that are cited in the paper. Remember, both footnotes and bibliography must be in Turabian formatting.

NOTE

1. Only apply to write the [paper if you are good in Turabain Format and have access to the Turabain format

2. Apply to write the paper only if you have access to the 3 textbooks above, atleast the the first two.

Waste-to-Energy

I argue that the world needs to switch to an environmentally friendly way of treating municipal solid waste rather than the old ways of treating garbage, which is whether landfill or incinerators.

I argue that Waste-to-Energy technology is a new innovative method to handle waste and generate heat to make electricity with fewer gas emissions and water soil pollution.

Please use all the SCHOLARLY articles I have provided. PLEASE, DO NOT USE any outside sources unless it is scholarly.

I will be uploading all the articles necessary to back up my argument (switching to waste-to-energy is the best solution to save the environment).

Religions

This is a discussion board:

Before starting this discussion, check the Module 4 Written Assignment instructions about essay/discussion options.

Beginning around 300 CE the world experienced a surge of religious zeal. In the West, Christianity flourished spreading with the boundaries of the Roman Empire. In India, Brahmanism transformed into a more formal system called Hinduism. Northern India and Central China’s code of ethics became Buddhism. And later, the Middle East would see the rise of a new monotheistic religion, Islam, which would spread dramatically throughout parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Religion offered people stability and purpose. Whether through the organized structure of the religion or the spiritual guidance each offered, followers found not only answers but also a prescription for a virtuous life. Just as their governments provided laws and consequences to create order and stability, so did the religions of the time. Each had texts that outlined the ideals, rituals for practice, and how to treat others. Regardless of the number of gods, evolution of the religion, or view of one’s existence (finite or infinite), these belief systems brought solace to many who had little other control in their lives.

But it wasn’t simply these qualities that spread the religions. Those who won the fortune of their governmental systems benefited most. Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam all reaped the rewards of powerful empires. Christianity was adopted as the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 by the Edict of Thessalonica. The church adopted the same geographic boundaries as the government and subsequently the bishops became the leaders of the provinces. As the Empire spread, so did the religion. Similarly, Buddhism enjoyed expansion under the Tang Dynasty in China. The early Tang government utilized the knowledge of the Buddhist monks and reopened exchanges between China and India again. Islam, on the other had, was not adopted by an already existing governmental system. Instead it created its own empire to spread its beliefs. Through tolerance and education, Islam was able to spread throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa.
It is important to note that Indigenous religions are less discussed than religions that produced written scriptures. Indigenous religions also have scriptures – they are just kept in different ways. Oral history and scriptures can be preserved through community practices.

Discuss the similarities and differences in belief systems of the major religions (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism).

How might those similarities and differences impacted their acceptance among groups as they looked to spread their ideals?
Why were some more successful at enlarging their boundaries and followers than others?
Where and how do Indigenous Religions enhance and/or augment our understanding of the “major” religions?

architecture

Paper 2
Within architectural history, works are classified into periods, each with notable and distinct characteristics. For Paper 2, select a period of architecture from the following list and one example work of architecture from this period. Draw connections between the period and the work of architecture, investigating the periods origin, time frame, design approach, notable characteristics, etc. Investigate the specifics of the work of architecture, such as form, materials, details, construction, assembly, etc, exploring its alignment or contrast to typical works from the period. Consider the architects / designers role or relationship to the period and the impact of the period on the architects work.

Periods of architecture to choose from: Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Classical, Rococo, Art Nouveau, Modern

Assignment
Choose one work of architecture covered in the course, either in lectures or the textbook. Write a 3,000-word paper that studies and interprets the work of architecture according to the topic. To understand and interpret the work of architecture, students should utilize a range of sources and materials, such as: photographs; written history; interviews; design and construction documents; material sources and selections; and more.

The paper should be a holistic interpretation of the work of architecture, investigating a range of internal and external factors. The paper SHOULD NOT be a research report or book report, which is focused on the recounting of facts or is solely describing the work of architecture. This paper SHOULD BE an interpretation of the information students discover about the work of architecture and take a unique position. Analysis and synthesis of research is required to produce a paper that satisfies this assignment.

The paper must include a thesis statement, which states this unique position and guides the organization of the paper. This thesis statement communicates the big idea for the paper to the reader and is backed up by evidence / research. This assignment challenges you to interpret the work of architecture for yourself. What are your ideas about the work of architecture in relationship to the topic? Additional guidance about formulating this thesis statement is offered in the Paper 2 Outline assignment.

Additional Guidance for Producing the Paper
Conduct some initial research to identify works you might be interested in. You may select a work from any portion of the course, even if we havent covered it by the time the paper is due. Be sure there are ample resources available to you to produce a paper of this length. Do not overlook sources which may be focused on the architect, time period, etc, rather than the individual work of architecture. A minimum of 6 scholarly sources is required. Remember: This paper requires significant effort and time on your part, so be sure to select a paper topic that interests you and you hope desire to learn more about.

In your research and interpretation, the physical characteristics of the work of architecture are likely to stand out to you, as these are easily seen and assessed in photos and drawings. In addition to the physical, dont overlook the range of intangible factors that guided the creation of the architectural work. For example, the specific preferences of the architect, the financial budget available, and the time period.

In the writing of the paper, be sure to use a more formal academic style of writing. While youll be communicating your ideas and conclusions, you should not use first person statements using I, me, or my. You should write from a third person point of view.

Resources for Paper Writing
The UF Writing Studio is a free service for current UF graduate and undergraduate students. Students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a consultant on issues specific to their own particular development. Appointments can be made on their website for virtual consultations (https://writing.ufl.edu/writing-studio/). These consultations are especially helpful to students who may need assistance with developing a thesis, using research to back up the position taken in the thesis, and organizing their thoughts / content within the paper.

Detailed Paper Requirements

Note the detailed requirements outlined below. Points will be deducted for not following the prescribed format, citation style, etc.

General
– 3,000 (minimum) word count.
– The paper must follow Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition.
– Use New Times Roman font, 12 point, single-spaced, with all margins set to one inch (1).

Word Count
The paper must be a minimum of 3,000 words. Microsoft Word will be used to confirm the word count. The word count does not include footnotes, captions, and bibliography. The abstract text, produced for Paper Outline 2, can be incorporated into the final paper text and would therefore contribute to the word count. The abstract should not be included as a separate section before the final paper, where it would not contribute to the word count.

Cover Page
Create a cover page that includes:
– Title of Paper
– Students Name
– Course and Section Number, Semester and Year
– Word Count

Images
The paper should include a minimum of 5 images. Select images that enhance or illustrate the ideas you are discussing. Each image should be clearly labeled, have a caption, and the source be clearly cited in the footnotes at the bottom of the page. For example: Figure 1: The north faade clearly features the library entrance and the intricate Art Deco details.32 The image label (ie. Figure 1) should be referred in the body of the paper to connect the paper text and images.

The images should be included on their own pages after the paper text and before the bibliography. Note: The images and their captions do not contribute towards or reduce the word count.

Citations + Citation Style
Use Chicago Style 16th edition for footnotes (embedded at the bottom of each page) and a bibliography (at the conclusion of the paper). The Purdue Owl is a great source for citation information and guidance. For Chicago Style citations, note that the bibliography format is slightly different from the footnote format.

Required Sources (6 minimum)
– A minimum of 6 scholarly sources is required. The course textbook and lectures can be used as sources for the paper, but they do not count toward the minimum number of sources.
– Research for this paper should come from a variety of scholarly sources. Consider: books; journal articles; videos / documentaries; interviews; design and construction documents; and academically recognized web sources.
– Do not use Wikipedia or similar Wiki encyclopedia-like pages. These sources can be edited at any time by users and their information is not verified.

To begin a search for scholarly sources, please visit the UF Architecture and Fine Arts Library webpage. E-books, online journals, and other scholarly publications can be accessed through the UF Libraries Catalog and Databases.

File Submittal on Canvas
Submit your paper file in Canvas in a doc or docx format. Your file name should be formatted as follows:  Student Last Name_Student First Name_Work of Architecture. For example, Smith_Jane_Notre Dame.doc.

LIfe of John Calvin

In a perfect world, there wouldnt need to be a minimum word count for these journals. But in order to obviate confusion, no Reflection Assignment should be submitted in less than 1,200 words (averaging 400 across the three questions).

However, there is no maximum word countso write as much as you think is needed to cover the question well so that you can add to your learning. You should integrate course readings and additional research (as relevant) into your answers. These assignments are reflectional in nature, but they should also be viewed as a way to demonstrate mastery of course material.

Questions to answer in Reflection assignment:

1. Leaders in History: Identify a leader in history that you would like to know more about. This could be a business leader, political leader, religious leader, military leader, or someone from another vein of leadership. After identifying this leader review some biographies and resources on their life and explain what you think makes them a leader worth following. (Note: if you are in a chaplaincy program, focus on identifying and reviewing the life and leadership of a chaplain with a ministry similar to your own.)

2. Theology of Leadership: How did the theology of Luther, Calvin, Edwards, and Bonhoeffer influence and impact their leadership? Be specific about what aspects of their theology encouraged them to lead. How does theology provide the foundation for biblical leadership?

2. Theological Assessment: What aspects of your understanding (or practice) of theology are weakest, and what can you do about it in the next twelve months?
