The Nature of Philosophy

INSTRUCTIONS:
This assignment consists of a short essay question, and some short logic questions. The main intent of these questions is to ensure that you have a sound grasp of the fundamentals of the material presented in this unit. The logic questions are intended to draw on some important logical concepts that will be relevant throughout the course. Although an understanding of basic logic terminology and argumentation is important in this course, logic for its own sake is not the focus of this course. As such, the short essay question should attract most of your attention with this assignment. There is a 3 to 4 page (1000 words) limit for the short essay question. As with all the short essay questions you will address in this course, Im not so concerned with whether you agree with a particular author or not. The quality of your answer is based on your exposition of the competing positions, your comparative analysis of those positions and, lastly, your argument in support of the position you defend.

As with all the assignments in this course, the short essay question is not designed to be a research question. There is no requirement to get material from external sources such as other authors, or reference websites, who have summarized, or criticized, the authors you are dealing with. In effect, including such material defeats your purpose in completing your essay because you are essentially telling me what some other person thought about the material you should be explaining and assessing. If you make reference to sources external to the course readings it will be detrimental to your mark. In some cases, I may ask you to re-work and submit your assignment. The point of your essay is to formulate the course material and develop your critical response. You can do this by working with the course material and developing your own ideas about the issue. The essay is simply your opportunity to set that out in paper.

QUESTIONS: (The total possible mark for this assignment is 100 marks.)
Short Essay Question The Nature of Philosophy  (80 marks)
In Apology, Socrates refers to himself, metaphorically, as a gadfly to Athenian society. He uses this metaphor, in part, in arguing for his assertion that the unexamined life is not worth living. Explain how this metaphor is considered to be characteristic of the discipline of philosophy. Specifically, explain how it justifies what our course readings refer to as the conceptual analysis, and the constructive, tasks of contemporary philosophy. Is Socrates conclusion that the unexamined life is not worth living still relevant in todays society? Provide an argument in support of your response.

Any topic (writer’s choice)

Based on your reading of chapter 22, write an essay which addresses the following questions:  To what extend did the developments discussed in this chapter (feminism, globalization, and technological/energy change) have origins in the more distant past?  To what extent did they signify something new?

Expectations:

Be sure to base your response on the documents themselves and the information provided in the preceding chapter.
As you plan your essay, be sure to pay attention to format instruction on the syllabus, and to the guide document on essays, located in the Course Overview page in the Start Here module.
The essay must be:

Between 1000 and 1200 words in length
Double-spaced, using a normal-sized font, such as Times New Roman 12-point
Properly cited: Cite sourceswhether directly quoted, paraphrased or summarized–using Chicago-Style citation
Use appropriate scholarly sources rather than dubious sources such as Wikipedia

Sundiata and Soumaoro empires trade

Instructions: Write an essay responding to one of the prompts below. You do not need a title page or bibliography, but all submitted essays should have your name typed in the document at the top of the page along with the prompt number you are responding to. Essays should be 4-5 pages double spaced with reasonable margins and 12-point font. Essays should have a thesis that is clearly identifiable in the introductory paragraph. Use evidence from the text Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali to support your argument. Include direct quotations and use a proper citation method. If you are a History major, I encourage you to use Chicago Manual Style footnotes, but you may use any citation method as long as it is used correctly and consistently. If it is relevant, you may also cite lectures and secondary sources that I have assigned. No external sources may be consulted. Also, the bulk of your citations and direct quotations should come from the Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali text. Essays will be evaluated according to four categories: thesis, use of evidence, structure and mechanics. See the rubric on Blackboard for more details.

This is the questions that must be answered:

What kind of historical source is the text Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali and how should professional historians use it in their work? What does it tell us about 13th century Mali? What does it tell us about the period in which it was produced? Describe the texts provenance and make an argument about how it should inform a professional historians interpretation and evaluate its contribution to our understanding of precolonial West African history.

I have submitted the teacher note from the previous paper in pdf, and also I have sent all the papers back to you so you don’t have to do a lot of writing, please follow the direction *****

**** Your research paper in final form is due October 12. The three theological statements due this week will become part of the material you present as your research paper next week, so this assignment is a head start on finishing your research paper (1500-1800 words); between this assignment and your rough draft, you will have much of your research paper completed before you enter week 7.  This will allow you next week to spend time editing your document for grammar, spelling, Turabian form, and general flow of the paper.  Do pay attention to the feedback I will have given you by now on your Research Paper Draft.

****Final

The student will write a 2,4002,700-word research-based paper in current Turabian format. The paper will focus on the importance of biblical theology and how it strengthens the Christians ability to articulate key doctrinal beliefs. The student must incorporate content from the Theological Statement assignment. The paper must include at least 10 references including the course textbooks. The paper must rely on biblical texts, but the Bible does not count as one of the 10 references and must not be listed in the bibliography

Interview a medical cannabis cultivator

Conduct an interview with someone involved in the medical cannabis industry (medical cannabis grower/farmer/cultivator) or who has worked with patients using medical cannabis. Prepare at least 5 thoughtful questions in advance that address their role and experiences working with medical cannabis.  Summarize the interview (you do NOT have to include a word-for-word transcript.)

In your submission, include:

The role/job title of your interviewee
The list of questions you prepared for the interview. Questions should be related to themes and issues in the course (medical cannabis science) and relevant to the role of the interviewee. All questions should be open-ended and lend themselves to further discussion.
Any questions you added as the conversation unfolded (or a negative statement if you did not ask additional questions along with an explanation)
A summary of the responses to your questions. Your summary should explain the role of the interviewee and provide a reader with a clear, concise, and complete picture of the interview. Your summary should explain the interviewee’s perspective on issues discussed during the interview and how they are relevant to themes from this course.

The five questions need to cover the above information best possible way!
