Annotated Bibliography

Annotated Bibliography

Historians base their writing of history on a variety of sources, many of which fall under the label of documents. Primary documents include official records, letters, diaries, newspaper articles, photos, posters, cartoons, music, and visual art. Historians also utilize materials to write history from secondary sources, such as books, articles, and Web sites about historical topics.

Identifying primary and secondary sources. Primary sources would be the words and deeds of Lincoln himself, and those of his contemporarieslike Frederick Douglasswhile secondary sources would be what have been written about Lincoln based upon primary sources. The foundation of the paper must be primary sources, with secondary sources being used to present and/or support the thesis based on the work of other scholars.

Students will write a multi-page annotated bibliography.  This assignment will list and describe a minimum of 12 primary and secondary sources, with specific requirements detailed below, that the student may use in his or her finished paper.  You may NOT use encyclopedias or the text books as sources. AT LEAST HALF OF YOUR SOURCES SHOULD BE USED IN YOUR PAPER!  THIS IS MANDATORY TO GET A PASSING GRADE!

The annotated bibliography should involve a variety of primary and secondary sources, including two full-length books from reputable academic presses, two primary sources, and articles from at least two scholarly, academic journals; it should not include encyclopedias, dictionaries, or non-professional websites.  Each annotation should include a full, properly-formatted Chicago citation and one to two complete paragraphs explaining the basic argument the work makes and the type of evidence used to prove the thesis.  If it is not acceptable, you will be allowed to rewrite it.  Here are 2 web sites that will be of help to you.  BE CERTAIN TO FOLLOW ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER IN ORDER TO GET A PASSING GRADE!

Research Paper Outline

Please maintain academic integrity. If you plagiarize, it will be reported and you will fail the class

Pick a non-US film from the period 1960-present.
You may write a comparative paper if you so wish, but please do not write about more than 3 films.
You must use at least 4-5 sources you have found during research. All 5 sources may be secondary, but if you want to include primary sources, limit these to 2, with the other 3 being scholarly, secondary sources rather than popular sources (check with your TA if you are unsure which is which)
The choice of film is yours, you may use a film from the syllabus, or from off the syllabus, but you must have access to the film (so you can watch it repeatedly in order to write your paper).
Write a research based paper in which you critically analyze and discuss the film through a historical framework. When thinking about which kind of framework or focus you want to take, consider some of these potential avenues:
How concepts of authorship or film style were affected by the political environment in which the film was made e.g. under fascism, post-colonialism
The role the government played in constricting or liberating film production, for example, through legislation or subsidies and other financial support.
Other cultural or social issues that the film/s may address directly, such as youth culture, feminism, immigration, violence, etc. These issues must be historically situated within a specific national context (in other words, think about why are your issue is important, or being debated in the time and place the film is being made?) This information will help you analyze your film, by providing historical context for your analysis.
Tips

Try to identify a question you want to answer through writing the paper. You can make this question the title of your paper. Answering this question will result in your thesis.

Show your research in your writing include information from primary sources you have used, and cite/quote what other film scholars have written about your chosen topic. However, remember to keep the thesis original and your own.

Use your chosen film to support your argument and discuss your topic. There should be a good balance between presenting your research, and analyzing the film/s.

Once youve written your paper, read it out loud. You can improve flow by checking your writing this way.

Research Paper Outline & Annotated Bibliography: Due April 29 at midnight

Write roughly 200-250 words outlining the chosen topic for your research paper.

Gather and organize an annotated bibliography that will help you write your research paper that includes 4-5 sources.

You may include class readings, but they will not count towards your 4-5 sources.

Be aware that the most helpful sources may not be directly about your chosen film, but might instead speak more broadly to your chosen topic. For example, the national film industry you are looking at, or what is going on politically and socially in the nation you are focusing on at the time your chosen film was made. It is advisable to find a mix of sources some of which are broad in scope (to give you historical/political/cultural, or social context) as well as those which are about your specific film/s.

All 4/5 can be secondary scholarly sources (books, book chapters, articles in peer-reviewed journals), or, if you chose, you may include 2 primary sources and 2/3 secondary sources. Please only include one popular source.

Each of your annotations should include roughly the following:

A brief description of the content/authors argument
How helpful or relevant do you believe the source is for your paper? (Will it shape a major part of your paper or only part? What part of your paper will it help most with?)
Who is the author where do they work/teach what is their area of expertise?

Interpretive Essay

Bryan Tilt sees two pillars and three processes (strategies) of environmental actionin the PRC. Do these pillars and processes seem adequate to move environmental protection sufficiently forward, or do you think that the absence in the PRC of social movements such as Liu has described for Taiwan and South Korea fatally weakens environmental
protection?

This essay has no single right or wrong answer; Im looking for a good argument rather than for a right answer. Thus, formulate a thesis, and then argue for it in well-organized paragraphs that give persuasive examples and evidence from the readings and lecture. Be sure to answer all parts of the question. Be sure to cite the readings when appropriate giving author and page number in parentheses.

Readings:
1. Tilt, Bryan, “Chapter 6: Civil Society and the Politics of Pollution Enforcement” from The Struggle for Sustainability in China. Columbia University Press (2009) https://faculty.washington.edu/sangok/JSISA405/Tilt%20Chapter%206%20copy.pdf;
2. Liu, Leverage of the Weak, Chapter 1-3

Descriptive Essay

Compare and contrast environmental protest in Taiwan, China, and South Korea in terms of the ladder of escalation, the discursive struggle, the manner of political mobilization, the relationship to environmental administration, and the role of national NGOs. Could you call China (PRC)s environmental protests or NGOsa social movement using Lius criteria?

Using material from the below readings to write a well-organized essay describing one of the following phenomena or institutions in Taiwan, South Korea, and/or China (PRC). Be sure to cite the readings when appropriate giving author and page number in parentheses.

Readings: Liu, Leverage of the Weak, Chapter 1-3;

The Dobe Ju/’hoansi by Richard Lee 4th Edition

Assignment details: The essay assignment for this course requires that you critically read and evaluate a short, famous ethnography on the San/Juhoansi culture of Southern Africa.  The essay will take the form of formal, academic book reviews.  You must follow the instructions for this type of review on this website: https://www.insidehighered.com/advice/2015/03/27/essay-writing-academic-book-reviews

Read the article on the website and after you are finished reading the ethnography, follow the suggestions and the template/guidelines of how to structure the book review.  Your essay should be structured exactly as suggested with all the same sections (7 of them) and in the order presented.

DO NOT write it in a subjective first-person style (using “I” or “me”).  Academic book reviews are written for readers who only want to know the facts about the book–readers do not care about your own personal experience reading it.  🙂
