Social Structure Analysis Assignment – Bullying

Goals:
In this exercise, you will:
1) identify a social structure (e.g. family, the education system, patriarchy, a governmental institution) and select a contemporary issue that relates to a structured element of social life. This will be to further understand how a social structure influences and/or is influenced by a dimension of social life (whether successfully or unsuccessfully) or how the social structure influences or is influenced by other social structures and/or the goals and practices of individuals
2) locate an example of a discussion of, or controversy about, the social structure in a popular media source (i.e. non-academic source); describe what is at stake and who are the stakeholders (i.e. whose interests are being discussed) according to the popular source, which may not be reliable/capable of addressing the topic with rigour E.g. Is whats at stake the continued existence of a traditional structure like the family? Is the social structure changing? Is it influencing social groups? (e.g. by oppressing them or empowering them)
3) review scholarly, sociological research to provide an evidence-based or scholarly-backed argument about the current state of the social structure in relation to the contemporary issue, supporting your analysis of the social structure via two scholarly, peer-reviewed sociological sources; use the scholarly sources to help you frame/situate the issues in cultural and historical context and to clarify what types of power relationships are at stake (e.g. are power relationships being reproduced, redistributed or threatened?)
4) practice up-to-date elements of style used in sociological research papers e.g. how to cite sources and document references

5 jewelry artists who inspire me

In an age where social media is prevalent, your research project will be an exercise in utilizing your networking skills to find an artist whose work resonates with you – deeply resonates with you.  You will write about them, their work, and how the two intertwine.  You must choose a contemporary artist, preferably one that is still living, but one that has died within the past 10 years is acceptable.  Fortunately, many living contemporary artists are friendly, and if you ask nice enough, might give you an interview.

This is not a biography, this is an exercise is conceptual development.  You can give at most, half a page of their history, unless their history is a fundamental influence on their practice.

You need to find an artist with a well-defined artist statement.  Finding an artist that appeals to you but doesn’t have enough information means you find another artist.

Questions you should answer in your report:

Why does this artist use jewelry, or other body adornment, as their medium?  (I.E. why is it important for the work to live on the body?)
Every artist is a visual storyteller.  What do they want us to think/feel?
What is their aesthetic? Why do you suppose they choose that?
What about their work inspires to you?

Requirements:

Emancipation and Reconstruction

At the end of the Civil War, the issues that most white Americans had with slaves and slavery in general did not just fade away because the North had won the War. There were those who thought that the former slaves deserved the same rights as other Americans, while others thought that just because slavery had ended that did not make the former slaves equal to whites.

While Reconstruction made it possible for some black people to partake in the political system and establish schools and churches, many lacked land on which to subsist and the Freedmans Bureau was of little assistance. Despite the passage of the 15th Amendment and the Civil Rights Act of 1875, the Black Codes, Klu Klux Klan and the general attitude of many whites made life very difficult for the former slaves.
1. Discuss the successes and failures of reconstruction and whether you believe that overall it assisted Blacks in their search for real freedom.

Environmental Crisis in the United States

PLEASE USE AT LEAST THREE OF THE ATTACHED READINGS IN THE PAPER.

The current state of the U.S. economy, as well as neo-liberal efforts on behalf of business to lessen the “burden” of government regulation.  As a result, the environmental movement, as well as environmental protection agencies within the state, have come under increased political pressure from organized corporate interests, especially those associated with what I term the polluter-industrial complex.  This has resulted in what many consider to be a profound crisis of environmental politics in America and throughout the world.

In a year there will be a presidential election. Utilizing the class readings, lectures, and/or films, provide a solution(s) to the environmental crisis in the United States or any other part of the world offered by a presidential candidate of your own choosing.  That might include proposals for solving a special issues, such as climate change or pesticide abuses.  Or it might take a more general approach to solving the ecological crisis in general.  Regardless, you might discuss what you consider to be the primary political, economic, and/or social obstacles standing in the way of a comprehensive resolution to the environmental problem or crisis.  For instance, you may want to address the types of structural changes, policies, and/or strategies that the environmental movement might pursue in order to overcome these obstacles.  You may want to focus on the need for campaign finance reform, or a new kind of chemicals policy.  Or, you might wish to address the implications of the globalization of capital on traditional tactics for achieving environmental protection.  You may want to focus on policy solutions to a particular problem, such as the export of E-waste or how to reform Superfund.  In other words, there is a great deal of freedom for you to focus on those solutions you find most compelling.  Whatever your focus, however, please be sure to analyze why the changes you propose are required, as well as why they might be effective.

FORMAT

The final paper shall consist of eight pages (c.2000 words).  The paper must be typed, double-spaced! Be sure to also include a bibliography and/or footnotes page, and to cite your sources.

A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT

While the implementation plan prepares students to apply their research to the problem or issue they have identified for their capstone change proposal project, the literature review enables students to map out and move into the active planning and development stages of the project.

A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT Statement Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignments to develop a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections:

Title page
Introduction section
A comparison of research questions
A comparison of sample populations
A comparison of the limitations of the study
A conclusion section, incorporating recommendations for further research
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Climate Assesment

Introduction

You work for an NGO that consults with developing nations on a variety of development issues. Your new client is the East African nation of Kenzania. Kenzania is slowly getting on its feet after a destructive civil war. The economy is doing better, fueled by significant growth in the agriculture and tourism sectors. The government is back to providing basic services. In fact, almost no week passes without news of a school or hospital opening. For the first time in many years, the government seems to be functioning productively. Nevertheless, Kenzania still qualifies as a Least Developed Country.

In addition to fixing and improving basic services, the Kenzania government is also turning its attention to matters that the pre-war government ignored. One of these areas is adaptation to the impacts of climate change felt in several parts of the country. To address this problem, the government created the Climate Change Adaptation Task Force (CATF), an inter-agency working group comprised of staff with environmental backgrounds, but limited climate adaptation experience.

The CATF identified the following priority areas for adaptation in Kenzania:

A low-lying island off the coast of the mainland. The island is slowly but surely being swallowed up by the ocean. It is home to 35,000 residents an ethnic group closely related to the tribe that resides on the coast, just across the channel that separates the mainland and island.
Kenzania’s largest city and its capital. The capital suffers from a lack of potable water, which is often rationed, experiences floods in the slums and other unmanaged settlement areas, and has high unemployment.
A area of highly fertile agricultural land that borders the city on three sides. Because most of the freshwater is diverted to the city, the fields have not been productive, raising serious food security concerns.
Vast grasslands several hundred miles northwest of the city. This area is rapidly shrinking due to the encroaching desert. Sparse vegetation that had been holding off the dunes was virtually all cleared for fuel during the civil war. The area is heavily used for grazing cattle. Beef exports are vital for the recovering Kenzanian economy.
After conducting a vulnerability assessment of Kenzanias priority areas, the CATF came up with the following proposals to address the issues above:

Relocate the ethnic group to the city. Though a relocation of this scale has not been conducted before, it is believed the relocated community of 35,000 islanders will be immediately plugged into life of a capital city and supported by a social safety net.
Build a large desalination plant to provide potable water to the capital and the surrounding agricultural fields. To run the desalination plant, build a coal- or natural gas-fired generation facility. This, according to CATF, will be a “killing two birds with one stone” type of solution.
Distribute inexpensive natural gas-fired cooking and heating stoves to the cattle farmers so they are no longer forced to cut brush and trees for fuel.

The head of CATF is eager to start working on these projects. As with virtually anything in Kenzania, funding is an issue. He has heard of international programs for funding climate change adaptation projects, particularly the new Green Climate Fund (GCF). He is wondering if any of the programs can aid Kenzania with the proposed projects. He calls your office and asks you to prepare a short briefing memo on this subject.

Instructions
Your memo should meet the following requirements:

The paper should be between 800-1,000 words including footnotes.
You must provide a brief assessment of the various pre-GCF UNFCCC climate change adaptation funds as they apply to your client.
You must contrast the pre-GCF adaptation funds with the GCF, discussing the extent to which the GCF can reasonably be hoped to overcome persistent problems with the previous financial schemes. This will obviously require you first to identify the problems.
You must elaborate on the likelihood of each proposed CATF initiative receiving funding through the UNFCCC framework. Where appropriate, you may suggest a better solution (using private financing, drawing on adaptation funding concepts from the U.S. or African Development Bank funds) in terms of reaching the overarching goal of financing the projects.

This assignment will test both your knowledge of international climate change adaptation funding mechanisms and your creativity in applying this knowledge to a given scenario. You might find that additional research is helpful in writing the memo. If you choose to use outside materials, please make sure to use credible sources.

Must have 6 scholarly sources
